X-Men Apocalypse Review Thread

Bummer, was hoping for something great. I had some misgivings based on the trailers and casting people like Olivia Munn, but was hoping it wouldn't tank in reviews. Too bad really, they were really breaking away from the stink that Origins and The Last Stand left on the series.

that all sounds really great to me

dude gets major themes from thing, feels connected to them, adapts those themes and puts them in front of whatever else

dude is opposite snyder
I have major issues with some of Singer's handling of characters and casting (and the man himself, never gonna get over those priest pics and stories) but X-Men has always been a metaphor for civil rights, segregation, and the oppression minorities face in our world so I'm curious as how to anyone can call these films failures in their handling of the main theme.

Crying MJ is the most versatile meme ever.

This shit is suitable for almost any scenario, lol

I expected this to be not as good, but not this much. Was hoping for reviews to persuade me to watch it as the trailers haven't been doing anything for me.

I wonder if JLaw has as much a screentime in the movie as the trailers seem to indicate. She's been one of the weakest aspects of the recent Xmen movies imo. I like JLaw in other things, but Mystique as a character/the performance they get from her in these movies is just... ugh... and giving her that much more attention is a surefire way to get me disinterested in an X-Men movie.

Looks like this may be the first entry that I skip and wait for a home release (and I've seen all of them in theaters so far).

i dont even really like superhero movies but im deeply saddened by this. for me xmen has always been the exception, loved DoFP and really wanted this to be good. i'll still see it.

man... :(

The mediocre reviews are saddening me. Even if the trailers weren't selling me on the film, having Singer and co. back again was gonna bring me back no matter what.

Stooop.

If you loved Thor so much you wouldn't all his second movie Thor 2.

There's no number in it.

This must end.

well you know i would call it the dark world but apparently gaf is extra picky about acronyms

see: cap 1 vs. TFA

I mean Thor 3 could be the new Spider-man 2 but it's not gonna retroactively make Thor 2 not Spider-man 3

civil war kind of retroactively made age of ultron better ya know

age of ultron ended up being the most impactful movie of the MCU lmao

What else is TDW?

Also, it's still CA:TFA.

Or TFA

Or CA

But there is NO "1" in the title.

It's kinda weird that they keep going back to it, but it makes sense.

It's also all Tony's fault. That fucker.

I'm actually relieved it became so impactful.

For all the criticisms of MCU's third acts being all world-ending, Ultron's was the only one that legitimately could have ended the world. The fact that it became such a huge issue in Civil War makes perfect sense.

Well this is depressing. First BvS, now this and later this year the inevitable bomb Dr Strange. Bad year for comic book movies. Mainstream audiences are going to stop giving a fuck by the time Infinity War: The Dark World rolls around.

Chill with inevitable bomb

My audience for Civil War gave it a few interested murmurs

A few interested murmurs dude

It's gonna make gangbusters

Man X-men as a propety seems like it would be better suited to a TV series, like can I get my X-men flavored daytime soap.
Be careful what you wish for. Soon enough we will have a CW X Men TV series and there will be too much teenage soap drama going around.

Unless you live in one of those countries where Marvel tried to hide the fact that the film starred Captain America, no one was calling the film The First Avenger when it released. It was just Captain America. Using TFA now, especially when there is a film that made 5x as much with the same acronym, is an inferior choice to Cap 1.

Dr. Strange will do fine. Tony Stark will show up, asking for help against this weird guy with 10 magic rings

yup

I just rewatched AoU and finally caught what Ultron was trying to do by levelling Sokovia. lol

Brett Ratner is a hotshot producer who doesn't have time to babysit fucking men in tights anymore.

Plus Beverly Hills Cop 4 lol

According to Wikipedia, Apocalypse has a $234 production budget.

That's insane. It looks stupidly cheap and I'm not even sure if this movie can break even considering toxic reviews and when marketing is factored in.
