i would like to know. who has 360's and is currently still playing on standard def TV's. how do they look? do they look/feel next gen even on standard def tvs? yeah, ive heard the gamespot/ign impressions, but i wanna know what GAFfers think :)

Well, I just posted a thread about Kameo, so you can read what I thought of the visuals for it there (to sum up; it looks awesome), but as for my other games, PGR3, which I was expecting to be the most impressive title for the 360 for quite some time, isn't quite as mind blowing as I was expecting (especially on some tracks, like the New York track where a lot of the ground textures are seriously PS2-quality, unless they magically "work" in HD :p), but it still looks pretty incredible. I think PGR3 is probably the one I'm most missing out on gameplay-wise though, by not having an HDTV, because the in-car view isn't nearly as worthwhile (you can't see all of the mirrors simultaneously, which I was really looking forward to). Still, it does look great, don't get me wrong.

PDZ is surprisingly very, very impressive for the most part. Some things look like typical "this gen" shit, but in large part the game is technically impressive, boasting some amazing lighting effects, and the game is normal mapped to hell. The weapons and first-person animations look great (though other characters not so much), and the game generally looks quite good.

From my play with the NBA 06 and Madden demos, NBA 06 looked really good, and Madden looked like shit (mostly due to animation).

Geometry Wars Evolved is one of the most impressive things I've seen thus far. :)

You can't see all the mirrors simultaneously in widescreen either. You have to look around with the right analog stick.

FWIW, I think what makes PGR3 impressive is modeling of the cities. For instance, I find the Nürburgring tracks far less impressive than the city-based ones. That's why I find it hard to believe that the game wouldn't wow people regardless of the resolution.

played a bunch of games at the "G.A.M.E." convention this weekend that were running at 480. honest to god, because i own a 360 and hdtv.... 480i looks like shit, and does not give you much indication of how good the 360 graphics really are.

get a vga adapter if at all possible.

How would HD fix that? It's the same image it projects I guess, wether it's in HD or not.

I personally LOVE the fact you have to turn your head with the right stick to see what's on your right mirror.
It makes races a lot more realistic and exciting for me; I love the fact mirrors work like they would in real life; i thought they were just cheap replicas of the central rear view mirror, but they are quite accurate instead; you'll need to check your right mirror if you want to see the car trying to pass on your right. It's awesome, it adds so much to the gameplay.

Graphically, PGR3 is using far more polys and high res texture than you could ever notice while racing. I'd say it's a huge waste unless you just wander around the tracks in photo mode; it's just insane. The level of detail on the buildings and cars is impressive; modeled windows, modeled, parallax mapped statues, bump mapped shop signs, ultra high res textures; None of the pics Bizarre posted in their weekly update was fake or doctored.
Road textures look mighty fine to me, of course you won't notice with the motion blur applied though, and sometimes it takes a little more than desired to stream textures from the dvd.

Just take a stroll in shinjuku in photo mode..now think what a next gen shenmue could look like...or a true next gen fps for that matters.

Also i've instantly become a huge fan of next gen motion blur. Take a walk in your garage; although graphically quite simple (until you've filled it up with 100k polys cars, that is) the effect in motion is surprisingly close to CG; the second garage you unlock especially really shows what a next gen fps should look like; i mentioned this in another thread also, Halo 3 NEEDS this, as does every X360 fps. Not only it makes everything move smoother but it gives graphics an entirely new gen feel to them.

I'm still playing on a 480i Crt (through horrible composite cables, too) and whoever said at this resolution PGR3 looks like PGR2.5 needs to find himself a different hobby.

However, i thought downsampling a 1024x600 image to pal resolution would result in a clean, totally aliasing free image, which is not the case. PGR3 is very flickery and jaggy in 480i, moreso than most xbox games. I'm pretty sure it's just the interlacing, they probably forgot to add some filter for this particular video mode. People who've tried it in 1080i are reporting the same issues, i've yet to see how it looks in 720p.

EDIT: the ring and night tracks sadly look like shite in comparison

PDZ and Kameo both look better than i thought, although PDZ suffers from slowdown i've never seen in videos. Strange.

I would much rather have a 360 and no HDTV rather than no 360. I cannot afford the HDTV I want, so I am saving up. Do games in 480i look like shit? No way. Compared to HDTV, of course the 360 isn't running at its peak on 480i. But it sounds great on my 5.1, and looks a lot better than XBOX to me on my SDTV. And I think PGR3 looks great. Just remember if you decide to go the VGA route, PGR3 looks stretched on a non-widesreen monitor due to the resolution Bizarre used.

I've played Kameo, NBA2006, Madden & NFS:MW. NFS is the only one that seems to suffer from being in 480i to me.. the other look quite good/sharp on my Toshiba. I'm especially impressed with Kameo.

I tried PGR3 on a SDTV the morning I bought the 360 and I was quite impressed that it would look that good. However, I am playing single-player exclusively on my 17" LCD screen with 720p. The screen size might be reduced but it's soooo much better.

Get a VGA cable and a Keyboard switcher, it's the perfect match for X360 and PC. I plug my keyboard and mouse to the switcher along with the LCD screen and thru a simple keyboard shorcut, I can switch from controlling my PC to my X360.

XBOX 360 gaming on an SDTV looks just a little better than the best of the XBOX 1 generation (based on my time with PGR3 and PDZ).

I find that kinda hard to believe. I was accidently playing @ 480p for a few minutes and it was stunning. Is 480i THAT much of a downgrade from 480p? Besides, when I see footage of the games on say... G4TV, there is still a noticeable difference, and that's 480i.
