PGR3, which I was expecting to be the most impressive title for the 360 for quite some time, isn't quite as mind blowing as I was expecting (especially on some tracks, like the New York track where a lot of the ground textures are seriously PS2-quality, unless they magically "work" in HD

), but it still looks pretty incredible. I think PGR3 is probably the one I'm most missing out on gameplay-wise though, by not having an HDTV, because the in-car view isn't nearly as worthwhile (you can't see all of the mirrors simultaneously, which I was really looking forward to).
I personally LOVE the fact you have to turn your head with the right stick to see what's on your right mirror.
It makes races a lot more realistic and exciting for me; I love the fact mirrors work like they would in real life; i thought they were just cheap replicas of the central rear view mirror, but they are quite accurate instead; you'll need to check your right mirror if you want to see the car trying to pass on your right. It's awesome, it adds so much to the gameplay.
Graphically, PGR3 is using far more polys and high res texture than you could ever notice while racing. I'd say it's a huge waste unless you just wander around the tracks in photo mode; it's just insane. The level of detail on the buildings and cars is impressive; modeled windows, modeled, parallax mapped statues, bump mapped shop signs, ultra high res textures; None of the pics Bizarre posted in their weekly update was fake or doctored.
Road textures look mighty fine to me, of course you won't notice with the motion blur applied though, and sometimes it takes a little more than desired to stream textures from the dvd.
Just take a stroll in shinjuku in photo mode..now think what a next gen shenmue could look like...or a true next gen fps for that matters.
Also i've instantly become a huge fan of next gen motion blur. Take a walk in your garage; although graphically quite simple (until you've filled it up with 100k polys cars, that is) the effect in motion is surprisingly close to CG; the second garage you unlock especially really shows what a next gen fps should look like; i mentioned this in another thread also, Halo 3 NEEDS this, as does every X360 fps. Not only it makes everything move smoother but it gives graphics an entirely new gen feel to them.
I'm still playing on a 480i Crt (through horrible composite cables, too) and whoever said at this resolution PGR3 looks like PGR2.5 needs to find himself a different hobby.
However, i thought downsampling a 1024x600 image to pal resolution would result in a clean, totally aliasing free image, which is not the case. PGR3 is very flickery and jaggy in 480i, moreso than most xbox games. I'm pretty sure it's just the interlacing, they probably forgot to add some filter for this particular video mode. People who've tried it in 1080i are reporting the same issues, i've yet to see how it looks in 720p.
EDIT: the ring and night tracks sadly look like shite in comparison
PDZ and Kameo both look better than i thought, although PDZ suffers from slowdown i've never seen in videos. Strange.
