X360 model with HDDVD player coming next year

Was the Dreamcast DvD Model ever released?

I remember in its last Christmas in Europe they were bundling DVD players with it. As far as I can recall anyway..

IMO, this is a risky move if true .....

if Blu-ray wins the format wars (and, at this point in time it looks likely that Blu-ray will indeed win) .. then Microsoft will be stuck with the losing format ... further cementing their status as a loser in Japan

but .. I guess the only alternative would be to ship Xbox 360 s with Blu-ray drives, and pay royalties to Sony with every Xbox 360 sold :lol ..........

So it wasnt a Dreamcast with DvD built in, but with a added normal DvD Player. No Sega CD Style attachment?

Pretty shit if thats the case.

Edit... Just saw the above ^ wow.

News like this just makes Xbox 360 look more rushed! How sweet would it have been for a HD-Drive for both movies, extra space for developers and no multi disk games.

Well without detail this news could relate to a seperate player being sold with the X360 in japan, as much as a built-in drive. On first glance at the topic header I immediately thought of the DC/DVD bundle in Europe.

Can anyone translate the full article? There's a lot of questions to be asked about it. Is it a built-in? Seems doubtful, but will it be the case that all x360's after next year will have it, or will it just be a somewhat limited product?

wouldnt help gamers at this point, even if developers released games on hd-dvd they'd still have to support DVD users :-/ so the benefits of the bigger storage medium wouldnt stretch beyond not having to swap discs.

I don't see why developers wouldn't be able to release games on HD-dvd for 360. On pc thier are developers who release games on both CD's and DVD

I don't believe this. What's the source of the news? A Microsoft spokesman?

There was a rumor about this HD DVD player back in October but Peter Moore called it bs.

You'll always be limited to keeping the data requirements to fit within a reasonable number of cds (or in X360's case, DVDs). How worthwhile it'd be would also depend on whether this was something like the Panasonic Gamecube, or put into every unit.

Uhh, think about that. The PC is NOT a platform of "standards" in the same way a console is. That simply would not fly. The amount of confusion that would ensue simply would not be worth it.

If HD-DVD would be adopted, it would be virtually useless as a game media as developers would need to continue using DVD9s in order to support all 360 machines. Dual releases would not be feasible and, honestly, what would be the point of buying an ADD-ON movie player. If you really want an HD-DVD player, buy a stand alone unit.

DUDES. Years ago I met the guy who did the firmware for both the Dreamcast MP3 player AND the Dreamcast network adapter (he's not at Sega anymore). Apparently the MP3 player actually worked! Jinkies

If 360 flops or isnt popular enougth, i could see this happening as a last ditch attempt, similar to the dreamcast's with dvd player offer in europe, ofcourse only if HD movies are such a pull factor which in my opinion they could well be.

Ha, deleted, either MS or Yahoo screwed up something with the news. Here's original article.

edit: well it was deleted from everywhere; excite, infoseek...who knows what was that all about anyway

"Interview mit Robbie Bach und Yoshihiro Maruyama von Microsoft
...
- Erneut bestätigt Maruyama, dass man in Zukunft einmal eine Xbox 360 mit einem HD-DVD Laufwerk auf den Markt bringen könnte."

Translated: Again Maruyama confirmed they might offer an x360 with a HD-DVD drive

This is from gamefront 9/30. Sorry, I hav no link to the original interview. And might be Japan only, like the "Q"

I remember a while back that the X360 was going to include an HD-DVD player instead of a DVD Drive. Its only purpose is to allow you to play HD Movies and help the HD-DVD standard, since they will probably get those drives Dirt Cheap from Toshiba. All games and development will ignore that format and stick with DVD-9. However, I know Blu-Ray will be solidified in Japan after the PS3 is launched, unless Microsoft can pull out Final Fantasy on the X360 and if Sony can't get it under $400.

I personally think this is bullshit. If a HDDVD version is released, that's a big FUCK YOU! to early adopters like myself. And what about games, are they planning to release games on both HDDVD & DL DVD formats for the same game?? if not then early adopters are again SCREWED and stuck with a limited library of games.

They already said, before E3, that it will be "extendable", and that Blu-Ray wouldn't be excluded if it will result as the winner format:

Details on the next-generation Xbox were scant from Edward Bland, global marketing general manager of Microsoft's home and entertainment division for Xbox, explaining that its major introduction will be held at the E3 show in Los Angeles the week of May 16. But he did note that “no decision has been made as yet for a blue-laser format” for Xbox. Bland noted that “either Blu-ray or HD DVD would be acceptable” and that the next-generation Xbox would be “extendable” in that area

They can't release games just on HDDVD. At worst it would be a double format release of multiple DVDs or one HDDVD.

how about I don't and say I did!... oh and if you're intrested in 1 I have 3 sealed premiums I have ready for Xmas Ebay time that I paid for.

i think yahoo jp story is pure bs but still knowing that ms management is (or was) seriously considering such a move (when they were asked if an uprgade/acombo unit is indeed a possibility ,jallard, robbie bach&mr gates never said it won't ever happen) shows how short sighted ms management is.

Maruyama-san said in Famitsu in September that MS maybe will build a HD DVD drive for the x360. They're considering it but nothing more.

But this Yahoo story is pure bs.

That would be one fucking stupid move. Kick the early adopters (that are soooo important for Microsoft as it seems) in the nuts and making them re-buy their 360? pfff...

More than 3% of us got the system free anyway.

I don't quite see how the Xbox360 would be "extendable" to current users because there is no pure digital output on the current Xbox360. You need HDMI or DVI to be able to take advantage of either of the next-gen DVD formats. This would require some reworking of the Xbox360 circuitry so there's really no way that current users could even upgrade if they wanted to.

They may offer an Xbox360 with a HD-DVD drive at some point in the future, but it would only be for movies. Splitting the gamer base by offering HD-DVD games would be one of the stupidest fucking moves in the history of gaming and from all indications so far, Microsoft is ready to be a serious challenger for the upcoming generation so they aren't going to go that route.

Why not? they already did with the tard pack, they can do it again.

They didn't split the user base with the tard. Every single Xbox360 game will work in either the premium or the tard pack. The only difference between those 2 versions of the system is which method you use for storage. You can also easily upgrade the tard pack to a premium system by adding the hard drive and as I pointed out, you can't very well easily upgrade the current Xbox360 with an HD-DVD drive because it has no pure digital out built into the current system.
