The DVD drive in xbox 360 now was jointly made by Toshiba and Samsung.. I think thats strange when in fact samsung could've made a DVD drive on its own.

Look for a surprise in the future. :)

But again, no one gets the fucking point.

THERE IS NO DIGITAL OUTPUT BUILT INTO THE XBOX 360 CONSOLE.

There is no slot for HDMI and no slot for DVI, therefore, NO HD-DVD.

Christ it isn't that hard to look on the back of your console and figure that out. The 360 does not have a pure digital out therefore, no HTCP, thefore NO FUCKING HD-DVD upgrade. It would have to be a whole new reworked system.

If true, dumbest Microsoft move ever...

IMO, the ~only reason Microsoft even put this out there in any interviews was to downplay the impact of the PS3 having Blu-Ray. I don't believe they have any intentions of doing it.

That could be easily fix with an adapter... Dont worry yourself over it.

Nope.

They'd have to put digital output on their GPU, which currently is only analog. There ain't no way around that.

Why the hell do you people keep arguing the same topic over and over? It was already said that if it did happen, "HD-DVD wouldn't be used for games".

Early adopters am don't care.

ATI already stated Its XENOS GPU is capable of 1080p. Is it possible for MS to add HD-DVD support in the future.. I would think so.

Whether it supports 1080p or not doesn't matter because you still need a pure digital output for HD-DVD, which has not been built into the Xbox 360, unless you can point out to me where I'm missing it when I look on the back of my console.

Resolution has nothing to do with Analog or Digital connection

You and I do not know the ins & outs of 360 design, I'm sure the designers were thinking about the future.

Its not a stupid move at all if its just for movies IMO. It'll remove one plus that the PS3 has over it (-- pro bluray people chill, not everyone is tech savvy nor cares about which format wins)

Aren't HD-DVD players potentially cheaper than bluray ones too? Conceivably it wouldnt even effect price.

While I am not much of a technical guru, I have looked outside and inside an Xbox 360 and there is no digital out and the output has been designed for analog.

There is no possible way for HD-DVD to work with the current Xbox360 without a serious reworking of the system's innards.

The cost of a DVD player compared to a HD-DVD player. The price will be affected. You might not see it on the consumer side (maybe a price jump for a Premium HD-DVD Xbox 360) but DVD players a dirt cheap compared to HD-DVD players.

Again MS said themselves they will consider HDMI in the future. That tells anyone with common sense that digital out is capable on the 360.

Retail prices should be comparable starting out, if that's any indication of relative cost.

Anyway, the point remains that current systems at least would not be upgradeable. It would have to be a new system to accomodate HDCP-compliant output.

Anyone have a full translation of the artice?

This can be changed with a new plug. At this time it is not a big deal to release a adaptor other then component, since most people don't have HDTV's anyway. Mark Rein even stated this during a interview as well. That argument holds no ground that HD-DVD is not possible. The one thing I want to know is why the Techies have not come out and stated that the laser does cannot read HD-DVD, I figured by now that someone would have open up the 360 and checked the laser. If the laser is standard then that would prove no support for HD-DVD, one would think. But, if the laser is different then a XDK upgrade may only be needed to change the current 360's to HD-DVD.

I believe he means HD-DVD or Blu Ray

After some confusion on whether or not the Xbox 360 will take on HD DVD support, Microsoft's chairman Bill Gates has confirmed that a later version of the Xbox 360 will indeed incorporate a HD DVD player or something else. However, even if the Xbox 360 console takes on HD DVD support at a later stage, it will certainly not be used for games. Instead, the only benefit of adding HD DVD support will be to watch HD DVD movies.

Japan's chief of Xbox operations, Yoshihiro Maruyama, has confirmed that while a version of the Xbox 360 console which can read HD-DVD discs is a possibility, the next-generation DVD standard will never be used for games on the platform.

"It's a possibility, but it won't have any relationship to gaming," Maruyama said, according to a translation from US website GameSpot. "If the Xbox 360 uses a next-generation DVD drive in the future, it will only be used for watching movies that run on next-generation DVDs."

Just as Blu-ray for PS3 it'll be only use for movies.

A HDMI cable like this would simply be a analog to HDMI adaptor, though - I'm not sure if this is sufficient to comply with HDCP? Does the signal not have to be digital leaving the box?

Blu-ray is useable for PS3 games, obviously.

:lol

I just said something like the possibility of this happening a few days ago, but stopped myself mid-thought because I believe it to be a terrible idea. If no games are developed with HDDVD in mind and this is only used for movies/audio hddvds, then I don't think it's a bad idea at all. Microsoft's already on the HDDVD side, why not include it with your main piece of hardware?

Some people cite the notion that Blu-Ray will win the next-gen format war, thus making HDDVD a bad thing for the 360. However, including HDDVD with every new 360 would potentially swing the pendulum back away from Blu-Ray.

(personally, I hope Blu-Ray comes out on top...but this would be just another reason to get a 360)

If every new 360 from fall 2006 on out has an HD-DVD player .... all I can say is fuck you Microsoft.

I will buy every single multiplatform title on the PS3 and I will limit any XBox 360 purchase to an absolute bare minimum of a must-have exclusive ... and even then.

Launch a console once and do it properly. Especailly if you're charging $400 for it.

I can't believe your the same person that tried to comment about IBM white papers on the Cell processor and try to extrapolate GFlop counts and compare them to Xenos.

Blaster1X said:
I know, but we havent heard anything about it yet.. 1080p really needs the extra space but PS3 games that's shown so far are only 720p.

Err..we have. Asides from Sony's numerous proclamations about it meeting the needs of next-generation games, a number of devs have spoken about Bluray and how they're going to be filling it up pretty handily. Resolution has little to do with capacity requirements, in that 720p games can and will easily use more space than a DVD will accomodate.

I can't wait for the rebuttal press release from MS after this really strong case.

Come on now... be honest, I've seen your posts around here... you were always going to do all the stuff you listed here, no matter what. ;)

Besides, early adopters always get fuxxxord.

The only thing rumors like this do is make me feel better about waiting to pick one up.

It's possible only with a new console model.
