Xanadu NEXT, Little King's Story, Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus Head to PC in the West

Tom, I just wanted to say thanks for all the PC love. It's really nice being able to have them on my platform of choice finally :)

Also looking forward to PopoloCrois!

Thanks XSeed/Tom, don't let the salt drown out the happiness. I'm super happy about these games, and I can't wait to see what we (PC gamers) get in the future.

Oh yeah, for the record: Xanadu Next is easily one of my favorite Falcom games of all time, and possibly one of my favorite GAMES of all time, period. I personally rank it higher than any of the Trails games, hold it on par with the best of the Ys games, and like it much better than Tokyo Xanadu (from what I've played so far of TX, anyway).

In a nutshell, it plays like a slower-paced yet more strategic Ys game, but with a single enormous, 3D Metroidvania-esque interconnected world full of secrets that's INCREDIBLY fun to explore and absolutely dripping with atmosphere.

The story is minimalistic but very good, and is largely optional, as the nitty-gritty of it is mostly told through stone tablets and papers you find during your quest.

Atmospherically, graphically, gameplay-wise and even story structure-wise, it reminds me a lot of Pandora's Tower (or I guess it's fairer to say that Pandora's Tower reminded me a lot of Xanadu Next, which is why I took to Pandora's Tower so quickly when we were working on it).

...Also, I maintain that Xanadu Next has one of Falcom's best soundtracks, which is a claim I do not make lightly. I mean, just listen to (and watch) this opening theme:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7et6P7AEriA

And listen to this amazing town theme -- one of my favorites of all time:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGpvvoal3Dg

It's a very different style from typical Falcom fare, but really goes to show how versatile the members of Falcom Sound Team are as composers.

And if you want something a bit more "Falcom-y," look up a track from the game called "Evildoer." It's the final battle theme, so I won't link it -- don't want to spoil it for anyone! -- but as long as you don't consider (instrumental) music to be spoilers, it's worth a listen, as it's *amazing*. Easily one of Falcom's best battle themes ever.

Hmm...the Last King Story screenshots look rough.

Alpha build. Still very, very early, and nowhere near feature-complete.

A Xanadu title? Oh my. I may have a Bit Of A Thing about western versions:

You could always make that easier for us, Mr. XSeed Person :-) - Weren't there a bunch of later Windows remakes?

Also possible are Falcom's Xanadu games, of which a few can be found in English (and I keep trying to make doe eyes at XSeed and/or Carpe Fulgur about the PC versions)

I'm more interested in the bits of the history of Japanese PC gaming that we've never really seen in the West in a big way. As an archetypal example, the Xanadu series. Tons of games, and I'd find them fascinating from a historical standpoint.

It's a big chunk of the pantheon of games that's not really known in the west, and a major gap in my understanding of the history of the medium, and I'd love to rectify that.

The majority of the Xanadu family of games. Some have made it into English, but very few compared to the vast range of titles in the series.

Any more movement on that front is always going to be a delight. I wouldn't say I'm a fan of the series as such - I've barely played any of them - but as a historical datapoint I find them a really big regrettable gap in my knowledge. I look forward to filling in part of that gap.

Edit: Hah, and wyrdwad - the recipient of much of my whining - is of course posting in this thread, I should have guessed. I'm delighted, and thank you!

Is XSEED teasing a new game?

Top-right definitely looks like a female torso wearing a blue top/swimsuit facing to the right. Possibly with a brown ponytail, but it's a bit smudgy there.

Xanadu Next and Tokyo Xanadu are so different games I don't even see how the release of the former could hint a future release for the latter. The causality link is off imo.

Well, I think there's a 'getting the name out there' component, at least. But yes, not a great deal more than that.

I'm sold.

Yes but not in this decade. Their focus right now is elsewhere. Xanadu Next is a 10 years old N-Gage/PC game.

Their focus is going to shift to PC too. Talking about decade is funny because Xanadu Next isn't a port, just a late localisation that was asked since long.

Not anytime soon, hence why "decade".
The Evolution remakes are for Vita, Tokyo Xanadu is for Vita, Ys 8 is for Vita/PS4, Sen no Kiseki III is (probably) Vita/PS3 and maybe 4. Falcom is just not working on anything PC, they don't have the time/resources and Japan is their main market.
And that was the point, they aren't porting Xanadu Next, it was on PC to begin with.

I've already played Xanadu Next and I can easily say that it's as good if not better than most of the Ys series. I'm getting excited because I really want to replay it.

I hope Sara does some magic and we get the definitive version of the game just like she did with FC.

Can't wait. I think I might have the N-Gage version laying around and was considering trying that, but it's probably best waiting for the real deal.

Truly grateful that you guys are bringing this to Steam :)

Shouldn't be too hard, since there is a fan patch that unlocks the resolution and adds some graphics options. With source code access she should be able to do it more easily.

That's probably why they announced it and it's coming relative soon, compared to the Trails games and Corpse Party, Xanadu Next is a much easier game to get released. Of course I could be entirely wrong there, but at least it seems that way.

For what it's worth I like most of the Ys games more, but I don't think they are all that comparable to Xanadu Next. It's not really all that similar outside of being a top down action RPG, so hopefully people don't go in expecting Ys in a different wrapper.

It doesn't have the fast paced action of the Ys series, but I still think it's going to be appealing for Ys fans that appreciate great gameplay and really awesome boss fights, they just shouldn't go expecting the same type of game.

It's at least better than Ys Seven and Celceta, haha.

Yeah, when I compared it to Ys in my above post, that was simply to "head other people off at the pass," as it were -- most of the time when I tell people about the game, they ask if it's anything like Ys or (because of the art style) Diablo. And I can't really say it's NOT like Ys, because they do have their similarities -- and it's certainly more like Ys than Diablo -- but you are correct, Chaosblade, that it's ultimately its own thing more than it is an "Ys stand-in." It even uses its own completely unique game engine that hasn't been seen before or since, which is REALLY rare for Falcom -- so it definitely feels more different from their other titles than it does the same.

Fucking sold --

Sounds great --

............. Eh. :|
Guess I'll wait for the reviews...

That music is dope, though.

my gosh, litlle king's story is an amazing game, glad to see coming the original wii version instead of the weaboo one (vita version).

Are you dissing Pandora's Tower, one of the best games on Wii?! You HEATHEN!! ;)

...What is it you disliked about Pandora's Tower, though? That might help determine whether Xanadu Next would be your style or not.

-Tom

Holy moly, i already have 2 of the 3 games but will double dip for pc support & appreciation!
Xanadu Next sounds awesome from vids and descriptions too, will give it a shot

Hey Tom, just wanted to drop by and say thanks for all the announcements.

I assume technical details of the ports will come when they are closer to release? I'm very interested to see if Marvelous will dutifully take the time to unlock the framerate and improve the loading times for SV and of course any improvements made to Xanadu Next.

Yeah, I don't have any of that info for you just yet, but we'll keep you all up-to-date when we learn more.

Holy cow, LITTLE KING'S STORY~!?

Is this the anime-ified portable one, or the storybook Wii version? (I'm assuming the former.)

What incredible news.

Keep up the great work, XSEED!
Its the latter. Wii version.

Wow. I bought it on Wii so long ago assuming I'd never see it anywhere else again. Then it pops up on Vita... and now PC. Really glad they're choosing the aesthetically cooler version. (Classical music 4ever.)

An amazing journey for an amazing game.

Xanadu NEXT, good. I've read (mostly) good things about LKS so I might play that too.

In a nutshell, it plays like a slower-paced yet more strategic Ys game, but with a single enormous, 3D Metroidvania-esque interconnected world full of secrets that's INCREDIBLY fun to explore and absolutely dripping with atmosphere.
the dark souls of Falcom games.

honestly I wanted to play Xanadu NEXT along with other Falcom games I have in the backlog before the end of this year, but at this point maybe I can wait. not sure, spring 2016 is pretty far, wish it was releasing sooner. ]:

Aweeeesomeeeee, I'm getting a new PC soon and actually wanted this game for it. I already played it on vita but I can't wait to actually play it on a big screen and with less slowdown. Day one

I wonder if they could port ys memories of celceta to PC as well? I really would love to play that game on a bigger screen

Well you kinda can already with Ys Celceta's recent whitelisting for the PSTV.
Otherwise, a PC port is still worked on by Chinese company Joyoland, though it will most likely be a bad port and remain a China/Taiwan exclusive pretty much like Ys Seven.

To be fair, the Ys Seven PC port isn't really bad, it's just *heavily* DRMed. That's really the only thing holding it back. Strip out the DRM and it's basically just the PSP game in high-res, ported quite competently.

Game runs at a snail's pace as-is, but I'm fairly certain that's 100% due to the DRM (which runs constant background checks to make sure your copy of the game is legit), not the port job itself.

Falcom haven't really shown that much interest on porting their newer games to PC. Last year they announced commitment to Vita and PS4, although they were wary on PS4. They acknowledged big Steam sales, but didn't really say more.
By the way, I just remembered that Little King's Story was developed by Cing (RIP). Who owns the Hotel Dusk IP now? *wink wink*
