Xbox 360 Custom Playlists - How exactly does it work?

Only info I've seen is what was said at GDC:

Custom playlists: This feature eliminates the need for developers to support custom music in games. The guide instantly connects players to their music so they can listen to their own tracks while playing all their favorite next-generation Xbox games.

It doesn't really give any details, but I can only hope and imagine it means that if I have my cd collection ripped to my pc, then I can stream all my music while playing any game? If this is the case, then +1000 MS. I just recently went through the hugely time-eating task of ripping every cd my wife and I own to my pc. Took me about a month. Now I stream all my music through XBMC where it's pumped through my home theater, every cd at the tip of my fingertips using the xbox dvd remote :D I make huge-ass playlists and shuffle them, it's like the ultimate jukebox and if this is what Xbox 360 is going to do in game I will be fucking ecstatic. :)

What I got out of this statement was that for the Xbox, you had software that was developed which let you access the music ripped onto your hardware. With 360, it's the hardware that's been developed in order to play music while playing any software.

Probably won't be able to that until someone makes a mod to allow XBMC (which can do streaming from a PC). I hope MS does do that though, their trump card could be PSP-like PC connectivity (would be awesome streaming/downloading vids/music/pics on the XBox) if they do it right. We shouldn't need a mod to do all that, it should be a feature out of the box.

Right, or more accurately, the system software will support standard APIs for thing like soundtracks, XBL player profiles etc., so programmers don't have to bother coding support from scratch for every game.

It could be this way. The only sure thing is that developers will have to do *nothing* to implement custom soundtracks: simply the console software will allow you to replace the game's soundtracks wit your music. I bet 360 will have strong multimedia integration with PCs, so chances are you'll be able to stream from it.

I personally hope they have an option for track substitution and not strictly random mode whenever music should play.

Say I'm playing the Mistwalker RPG...I'd like to pop the disc in my Xenon and instead of being auto loaded I can go into a sort of "game profile" where I can access various features for that game. Select the music tab...be greeted with a list of the games music (and be able to play said music) and substitute certain tracks for tracks of my choosing off my Xenon hdd addon (or network...or mu...or whatever MS sets up)

And of course if I'm just playing the latest extreme sports/racing title I can have the random mode whenever game music plays option as well.

Well it would seem MS is touting this as a standard feature. In other words, if there really are going to be multiple Xbox 360 configurations available at launch then this is one of the features that would work on all verions right? If that's the case, then if you can buy an X360 without a hard drive then your music obviously has to be somewhere else. In that case, seems they have to support streaming from a pc.

That would be awesome, but I doubt this will be possible.
