Xbox 360 Game impressions

I'm not seeing enough XBL Arcade love in this thread. It's really amazing to me that I can buy a console w/out any retail games... bring it home and play it for hours on end.

MS really got it right this time with game demos and Arcade games. Those of you guys with 4 or 5 retail games need to spread some of that love to the Arcade devs.

Also GEOMETRY WARS rocks baby my current high score is
510,915 bitches ha

check GamersReportsDM on live if u want to check! geo wars owns all totally worth the 6 bucks

im playign ganutlet and smash tv multiplayer on live now acutually! join me up

Perfect Dark-Entertaining,but falls terribly short of being the true killer app it was billed as,wonky aiming controls being the biggest offender for me,and a online setup that is just god awful, learn from Bungie, implement a streamlines matchmaking system, not some half assed system.

NBA Live-Best basketball game ever,I haven't played NBA2K,but the reviews say its the same game, and if it is,I don't see how anyone could prefer it over Live if they want the best sim available.Turns over a completely new leaf, lacking on features, but it has the gameplay, all that matters to me.

Madden-Horribly dissapointing,ebayed it already.

Call of Duty 2-Best launch game I own, easily. The feeling of actually being in a big war is nailed so perfectly in this game...only problem I have,I got hit with the bug yesterday, finished one of the campaigns, hit next mission and was sent back to the very beginning of the game and all of the other stuff which I had beaten was locked, ghey.

Still looking forward to buying...

You need to buy NBA2K6. Just trust me.

ridge racer 6 -- beautifully constructed courses in the best arcade tradition: they're as scenic as anything from daytona or super gt, but the ability of new hardware to draw a full world and light it consistently creates a real sense of place. screenshots don't begin to convey how beautiful this game is. the handling is straight out of ridge racers, which suits me fine. i'm hooked.

my only complaints have to do with the music -- i'm not taken with many of its original songs, you have to dig through menus to find out what song is playing, and i don't like the way it handles custom soundtracks.

call of duty 2 -- the ww2 routine is awful tired, but some of the level design here is excellent. when it hits the right combination of trench fighting, run and gun, and scripted spectacle it's as exhilarating as the genre gets.

pgr3 -- the handling strikes a good balance between sim and arcade. technically it's probably in its own class -- it just looks real sometimes. but my god, the first several tracks are some of the worst i've ever seen. they're completely flat, they repeat the same 90 degree turn ad nauseam, and the background detail is so safely tucked away behind trackside barriers that you can only tell las vegas from london by the palm trees. either this game gets much better as you go on or the critics are HIGH.

i've also got pd zero, but i haven't played it yet.

oh -- geometry wars and mutant storm are good fun, and despite their mechanical similarities they're both worth having.

Perfect Dark Zero rocks. I haven't even opened any of my other games because of PDZ and XBL Arcade. Having so much fun with PDZ online with Dark-Ops Eradication and Co-op it's sickening.

Could Rare put PD64 on XBL Arcade if they wanted?

They could probably retool the game a bit and call it Perfect Dark Arcade. However, a direct port using the same name would probably not be legal since Nintendo paid to have that game published.

It really depends on how the buy-out contract was written.

I have no problem with the controls. What is exactly wrong with the online setup? The search function is great. Easy to find the type of games you want. And also easy to join games with people off your friends list. Also, I'm glad Rare didn't go crazy with rankings and stats like Bungie did. That only brings in the cheaters and ruins the games. I'm having a blast playing unranked games and I like it that way.

Yeah, I played this at a friends house recently. I was not impressed in the slightest.

I really think MS f'ed up buying Rareware.

Nothing better than "I played it at a friends/kiosk" non-impressions!

How is playing it at a friends not valid Cerebral? I played it for a few hours. If I don't get the "good game vibe" in that amount of time - it's not that good of a game. Try to be less of a bot please and realize others may have a legitimate differing opinion than yours.

I thought Rare published the original Perfect Dark themselves?

MY IMPRESSIONS!

Ridge Racer 6 is awesome and I'm tired of waiting for this shortage to end so I can play it again. A+++ times infinity.

I suck at PGR3 and it's not as pretty as RR6.

Kameo was better than I expected but that ain't saying much.

PDZ is absolutely atrocious. I can understand why folks wet themselves over artsy craftsy garbage like Shadow of the Colossus, but I'm convinced the only way you could enjoy this game is due to insane console loyalty. Or getting paid off by Microsoft.

Oh, and XBL Arcade is the best thing about the system. I can't hate something that has so many Robotron knockoffs. Geo Wars is #1.

I just found your post pointless. Maybe discuss why you don't actually like it instead of.. OMG PLAYED AT A FRIENDS IT SUCKS!

Woooo I can do it too!

So, my post is pointless, but people who just give a bad grade - that's OK. I get it.

I am at work as well - and don't have time to give you an IGN review. Seems more like you are just hypersensitive to others giving PD0 negative remarks (which it deserves).

Never asked for a IGN sized review. I just don't feel PDZ deserves such negative remarks. It's a really great game imo. I think it is a great followup to PD64 and Goldeneye. And PDZ was being shit on GAF before anyone had actually played the final game. I don't feel people have given it a chance. I'm not hypersensitive. I'm having fun with game as are a ton of other people I play with on XBL every night. That is all that matters to me. But you did play the game for a few hours at a friend's house, which isn't enough time to see anything in single player. Especially on Perfect Agent. Nor enough time to really give all of the online modes a good test either. Whatever floats your boat.

And yeah, people giving grades with nothing to back it up is also just as pointless. Thanks for pointing that out.

I played single player and multiplayer. Quit making assumptions.

You like it, great - you are entitled to your opinion, as well am I.

PDZ:

"PDZ is absolutely atrocious."

I have to agree with this statement. As a huge Golden Eye fan I could not believe my eyes when I saw the gay leather clad baddies skating around like in an N64 game. I mean, so what if the walls are all normal-mapped, etc. When you're suddenly dragged out of the experience by appalling enemy animation, it's hard not to get the feeling you're playing... a MIDWAY game! Nice one, Rare.

COD
Nice PC port, solid FPS, good effects, a lot of fun - 7/10.

PGR sounds quality but not to fond of this series.

Geometry Wars sounds really good - so is MS's best game a $5 retro game? Hilarious if so.

Overall I really don't know why anyone thinks this is a good launch. Great hardware (when it works) but the games are all marginally improved retreads. They needed a souped-up Half Life 2. Now that would have been interesting - so many people still haven't played this game and the under-powered xb version is getting lost in the crowd.

Alright, this thread wasn't intended to turn into a bashing war amongst opinions against eachother...

I personally am looking forward to spending a nice chunk of time with PDZ, at least 20 hours to give it an evaluation. For me, since it has bots, it stays in the collection until something better on 360 comes along with bots.

All the Ridge Racer love keeps throwing me for a spin on whether to pick it up or not. I keep telling myself to hold off and buy Full Auto in February though. Regardless it looks like most games talked about here have their good points.

I'm leaving work soon, and hope to come back with some good contribution for tomorrow or another day with more impressions.

I agree, it's just not good. I really wish MS would strip Rare of the franchise and hand it over to someone like Bungie or sell it to Free Radical.

You make sense like my disabled female dog does when she try's to piss against a tree by lifting her leg.

Bullshit it's "just not good".

PDZ multiplayer kicks the shit out of most games', including Halo 2's spammy magnetic crosshair crap.

The general consensus around here is that NBA 2k6 is good and that NBA Live is not so good.

If there's any one Xbox fan that would probably defend a game that's bad it's me, PD0 is just that bad. Fuck, even Azurik is better than Pd0.

Same here. I keep hearing that NBA2K6 is the best of the sports games. I am hesitant to pick it up just because I have not been a huge fan of the previous NBA 2K games.

Huh? Oh come on it cant be that bad...I have to admit i never played PD0(pal player), i dont expect a Goldeneye-Pd64 worthy sequel..but worse than Azurik? :lol

Ah well good thing i wont be buying a 360 on launch so i'll have plenty of time to test it.

Hooked up my 360 last night, and haven't played Live yet (plan on it sometime tonight or tomorrow) so my impressions aren't too specific:

Perfect Dark Zero:

I love this game. While the higher difficulty levels lets you play with a more 'covert' style, the lower difficulty level allows me to run-and-gun. Something for everyone. I don't know why people are trashing the early levels. I love the nightclub level. Haven't tried co-op yet, but from what I read it seems to add a whole other element to the mission mode.

Graphics are nice. Sound effects are nice. I'm not one to criticize voice acting so I'll say it's fine if you're not a stickler for that sort of thing.

This is my first console FPS, but it didn't take me that long to get the hang of using dual-analog aiming. I'd like to take this time to thank Luigi's Mansion for helping me with that. I hear multiplayer is great, and the main reason why I ultimately purchased this game over CoD2 is because of more players online, and more "arcade" style fps play, which I'm more a fan of than "camper" style. (Never really got into Camper of Duty 1 for PC.) I spent most of the past 3.5 years playing RtCW/ET on PC. I like to move around.

Project Gotham Racing 3:

First impressions? PITCH-BLACK SHADOWS. Thanks a LOT. How about for PGR4 they use a dark gray instead of black for shadows? I can't even see half the damn street during the day.

Since I was never an XBox 1 owner, my only experience with this series was MSR for DC. That game was mind-numbingly frustrating. Without playing anything higher than Easy or any multiplayer yet, I can only say that this game isn't the game that will make you love the Kudos system if you never liked it before. Same game, shinier coat of paint. Still pretty fun though. If these games are your cup of tea, you'll eat it right up.

Don't need to say anything about the graphics. Looks amazing. I'm not one of those 30fps/60fps handpickers, but this game doesn't feel slow at all (to me). One of my main problems with MSR back in the day was not being able to tell when a turn was coming ahead. The distance graphics were hard to make out (if the intense amount of shimmering didn't blind you first :)). In this game, not a problem. You can sense turns coming from a mile away.

Can't say much about the soundtrack, as I haven't put in much play time yet. I'll probably end up going custom though, just because I can. I can't wait to try multiplayer.

Geometry Wars 2 (Demo):

Full version is getting BOUGHT, and BOUGHT ASAP. 'Nuff said. Tried GeoWars 1 in the PGR garage and it felt a bit cramped, but 2 is perfect. Perfect, perfect, perfect.

Hexic

Yeah. Not for me. Of course, I say that after I spend a good hour/hour-and-a-half on it after first discovering it in my dashboard. :lol Nice throw-in.

Hard Drive includes:

Thanks for that Adidas commercial. Deleted.
Titanic? Sunk to the bottom of my deletion ocean.
X360 Devs Movie? No thanks. (Nice job on the dashboard though.)
Warren Miller? Warren Deleted.

I plan on buying SmashTV and GeoWars 2 over XBL Arcade. I owned Super SmashTV for SNES and can't wait to play some online co-op.

Project Gotham Racing 3 - 30 FPS LOL. This game is pretty great in spite of that. I was a huge fan of PGR2, and this delivers more of the same. Looks and plays fantastic. Best game on the 360 right now.

Madden 06 - A barebones football title with pretty graphics but some nasty tearing. The game seems a bit to easy to throw downfield in even on higher difficulties. The lack of owner mode doesn't bother me, as I tired of that pretty soon after it was introduced. Decent title. Not great.

NBA 2K6 - Graphics are a mixed bag. Some players like Lebron look great, while anyone with longer hair ends up looking awful (Ginobili). The arenas could also use some more polish. As for gameplay, everything moves smoothly, but it is all too easy to get to the basket. I could take it into the lane seemingly at will using Jason Terry. Ginobili is nearly unstoppable slashing to the basket with him, and I imagine it's very much the same with other highly rated guards. The game is still fun to play, but there are still improvements to be made.

Condemned - Right from the start this game had me on the edge of my seat. The atmosphere is spooky as fuck. The amounbt of tension this game creates is spectacular, and it will be nice to see if it can maintain it. The melee combat is an intense affair, highly reminiscent of Riddick. I have spent the least amount of time with this out of all my launch titles, bu tI will be giving this one more love in the coming days.

Perfect Dark Zero - I saved this for last because it has been my least favorite so far. The mission structure so far has been subpar, and the combat has largely been lackluster. After tweaking the controls the game has gotten a tad better, but it still controls nowhere near as well as some of the other current FPS titles out there. I have yet to play this online, but so far I'd have to say PDZ has been a mediocre affair. The soundtrack is awesome, though. Except for "Glitter Girl." Fuck, that song is horrendous.

get the fuck outta here

People that love HAlo have a hard time dealing with PDZ.

There loss (i do love HAlo, but i love Rare more :D )

Keep in mind I'm in different stages of completion with all of them...

CoD2 - My favorite history themed FPS in a long time. No run & gun here on Veteran difficulty, every bit of cover is crucial. Deliciously difficult. 9.5/10

Kameo - Only a few hours in. Colorful, corny, clunky, creative... 8/10

Ridge Racer 6 - Probably the best Ridge yet. It's just such a sprawling game that it never feels like you're making progress. There are, what, 120 races in career mode? Yikes. 8.5/10

NFS: Most Wanted - Kind of a cross between the dimwitted Fast and the Furious junk of the Underground games and the crazy police chases of Hot Pursuit and the older NFS games. Also added a GTA-like "free roam" mode, which is completely and totally pointless as far as I can tell. A few years ago this would've been a 9+ game, but no crashes and no damage modeling is pretty weak these days (ahem Gran Turismo). 8/10

PD Zero - Only played the first mission on single player, so I don't have much to say yet. Multiplayer, however, kicks ass. My favorite XBL game ever. The bots are very smart, there are options out the ass, the levels are all classic multiplayer FPS boards with multiple levels, camping spots, etc. I love that the game makes head shots crucial. Takes more skill than just unloading a clip into someone's chest. No score yet.

PGR3 - Only played one race. Saving this for when I finish some of the others.

Condemned - Haven't opened yet. Saving it.

XBL Arcade games:

Geometry Wars - Like Robotron covered in neon paint. Intense is an understatement. Just so bloody hard. 9/10

Mutant Storm Reloaded - I like it a little better than Geo Wars. Same concept (l-stick move, r-stick fire) but with 89 different boards and loads of different, brightly colored enemies. 9/10

Bankshot Billiards - Bah. This has been my relationship with billiards games forever: Sounds like fun reading the box in the store, then you get it home and play it and it's pretty damn dull after 15 minutes. Same here minus the box. 6/10

Outpost Kaloki X - Haven't really played yet, just took a quick tour through it. For all you nostalgists, it is very, VERY reminicent of a SNES-era strategy game in graphics and depth.

Zuma - One of my most played games so far. Even though I already played the shit out of Zuma on the PC. Even though I already played the shit out of the PS1 game Ballistic (same concept) years ago. It's the perfect pick up and play for 20 minutes game. 8.5/10

Bejeweled 2 - Everyone has played this in some form or another. I play it when I'm lying in bed about to fall asleep, that's how intense it is. But it's still fun. 7/10

Hexic HD - Well, better than Bejeweled. 7.5/10

Gauntlet, Joust, Smash TV - All seem arcade perfect, only played co-op Smash TV before.

PGR3- WTF? Where are the guns? Where are the Nazis in trenchcoats? Crap game.
Kameo- Suffers from the same problems as PGR3. Crap game.
PDZ- An FPS that doesn't have Nazis in trenchcoats? Crap game.
King Kong- If only the dinosaurs had been wearing trenchcoats....crap game.
COD2- HOLY SHIT! NAZIS! TRENCHCOATS! GOTY!

I haven't tried Condemned and NFS MW, but I'm hoping they are similar to COD2.

PERFECT DARK ZERO
(Dev: Rare, Pub: Microsoft)

The original Perfect Dark for the N64, while not being as popular among FPS evangelists as GoldenEye, was a classic; it provided FPS enthusists the world over with over-the-top action, and a virtual world to get lost in. After Microsoft aquired Rare, the brilliant dev team behind both Perfect Dark and GoldenEye, a sequel to the original Dark was highly expected. Well, those dreams were answered -- sort of. Perfect Dark Zero is a prequel to the first game which follows the story of young secret agent Joanna Dark and her father. Seeing as the uber-hypedPDZ is Microsoft's "main event" launch title, we made it our highest priority to spend the most time tooling around in Joanna's world once again.

While not necessarily a bad game, PDZ's falls are most certaintly the fault of a rush-job; while environments look nice, character models and animations are almost laughable, as is the voice acting from the so-called "talent". However, while these minor gripes may affect the single player game quite a bit, they don't even come close to ruining it. While the story may not be up-to-par with the likes of Metal Gear Solid or even Microsoft's own Halo series, the original PD gameplay you know and love is quite apparent, even when marred by the less-than-stellar presentation. It is important to note that with this game, first impressions aren't everything. The un-bolded text of this review was written after only an hour or two with the final retail version of the game (and more than half of this alloted time was spent tooling with the multiplayer options). As the single player portion expands, it is quite apparent that the storyline is pretty much filler, which tries (and generally fails) to explain some of the game's key plot points, which, for the most part, come and go as they please. When you take this into account, it is quite apparent that the gameplay flows better with time, and, as a result, provides a greater level of depth and pure enjoyment. Once you stop caring about the game's story, it is easier to become more invovled with actually playing the game, which seems to be Rare's intent. As such, the original review score (a 7.5) has been kicked up a notch.

As far as multiplayer options go, Rare has done their part to insure that you won't be taking this game out of your new 360 systems for quite awhile. With a slew of different deathmatch modes and a truly unique co-op feature, online is truly where this game shines. The few matches we were able to play seemed pretty standard fair; as far as online multiplayer is concerned, PDZ sets the bar pretty high for future Live-Enabled Xbox 360 shooters. The standard options, such as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Capture the Flag are included, and accompanied by less common game types which include King of the Hill and a full-fledged, no holes barred Co-Op feature that is both fun to play and replay time and time again, adding to the game's already incredible replayability factor. Overall, the multiplayer is simply fantastic, which, when compared to the overbaringly lackluster single-player campaign, is surely a good thing.

I'm with you. I actually traded in 2K6 for Live on the 360. I'm sure it's a better put together game but I just can't stand shooting with the right stick. I was always shooting when I wanted to juke. Not to mention those ghetto-ass menus. I'm not saying presentation is everything but DAMN that's some lazy-ass ish. I'm nowhere near a hardcore Basketball gamer. I just want to run through a season with my Knicks and hope for the best, and I'm just more comfortable with the control set on Live. Also, it's as pretty as hell.

That free throw shooting though. Damn.

First of all PGR3 isn't an arcade racer, second of all RSC2 smokes the fucking hell out of PGR3.

PGR3- FUCK AWESOME TOTAL, seriously the best game on the system. single player is really short and online is amazing

.fixed :)

The single player mode is the shortest career in any racing game I've played in the last few years. It also has the least amount of tracks (a lot less than PGR2, and a ton less than RSC2), least amount of variety (RSC2 has you going through jungles, snow, autumn leave forests, deserts, streets, etc...), and the physics and lack of real car damage is kinda meh. PGR3 would be a great single player game if RSC2 didn't set the standards extremely high for non-sim racers.

It's not an arcade racer? What is it then? And I don't really care for RSC2, i'm spoiled by Sega Rally 2 when it comes to rally game.

Somewhere in-between arcade and sim. It doesn't handle seriously like a sim, but you have to actually brake and drive kinda realistic unlike arcade racers where you slide around in a physics engine that doesn't represent reality.

And go back and give RSC2 another shot. It's the only arcade racer that's outdone Sega Rally/Daytona IMO.

Everytime I try to love Kameo, the control and camera spit in my face.

Everytime I try to hate it, the graphics and battle action sequences leave me awestruck.
