Not so exciting news because of the game, but it's the first exclusive xbox live arcade game. We will see if this model is successfull and this trend will catch on?

Marble Blast Ultra to be made available to Xbox Live Arcade customers shortly after system launches.

Microsoft said it was going to be taking the Xbox Live service to the next level with the Xbox 360, and the company looks to make good on that right out of the gate. Today, Microsoft and GarageGames announced the first exclusive Xbox Live Arcade title for the Xbox 360, Marble Blast Ultra.

Marble Blast Ultra is the latest in GarageGames's Marble Blast series, an online arcade action game in which players navigate their marbles through moving platforms and dangerous hazards while collecting gems and power-ups. The game was designed with players of all ages in mind.

Gamers will likely need a hard drive-equipped Xbox 360 in order to download the game. A GarageGames spokesman said Marble Blast Ultra technically would be able to fit on a memory card, but only if the Xbox Live Arcade architecture would allow downloads directly to memory cards.

Seems like they're trying to get people to buy the harddrive. They're indiots. All they have to do is include some type of Halo game/upgrade/expansion on it and people wouldn't even think about not buying it.

This is AWESOME. Huge congradulations to the Marble Blast team, and this is awesome news for indie devs everywhere. Xbox Arcade has the potentional to reach 10s of millions of people who WANT to play games, something that's difficult to do on the PC side of things. For Indie devs this could be an incredible opportunity and I'm very happy to see GarageGames working with MS on this.

Those indie games are small. You'll most probably be able to carry them within a memory card.

And yes, as I said I am not interested, but this could be great news for indie developers. I hope they get good access to the devkits so they can keep pumping small, fun games.

Damn, I'd pay upwards to $50 bucks for that.

I loved Marble Blast Gold! for the PC, bought at least 5 copies for my friends... still have it installed with an icon on my desktop.

I'm going to be a sucker for these types of things. The arcade roms won't do it for me, but these sorts of things will suck me right in.

He it's funny cause this is a question I asked both Peter Moore and Jay Allard : "What's microsoft doing to help creating new game concepts?". And both replied : "Xbox Live Arcade" :)

Homebrew games, on an unmodded console, with such a convenient delivery method, it really will be something completely different than we've ever been accustomed to. One of the greatest feelings when I get a new console, or phone, or whatever, is going in and exploring all the "stuff" inside it. Typically, out of the box, a games console pretty much just sits there. Xbox 360, on the other hand, has so much packed in to it. It will be fun to explore.

Especially since all Xbox Live Arcade games will have a free demo.

That + hopefully most, if not all devs/publishers will have game demos available to download as well which would be very sweet.

Exactly! How cool will that be? Let's face it, we've all played some game demos, and enjoyed them a ton, but thought "this is enough" and just played the same few levels over and over again. I can imagine some weekends where I just go through and try out demos of all these games.

It's something you could do on PCs, but something about the simplicity of it all, on a console, well...it just seems like so much more fun.

This is awesome! I'm also really excited about the possibilities of more indie games reaching a much broader audience via Live Arcade.

Don't give them any ideas! :)

Seriously though, I wonder what they'll be charging for downloadable games? I find most of the Live Arcade stuff ridiculously overpriced (like the Namco games, which you can buy a whole disc of games for about the price of one of the downloads). I wouldn't think too much about trying out new games at $9.99, but maybe not if they're priced much higher than that.

Cool. I'll probably get Marble Blast if it isn't too expensive.

This is the time in console gaming I've been waiting for. Downloadable game demos will be finally here. I've always found it odd I had to pay money to try out a game demo with no free alternative. Now with Xbox Live 2.0 and the bigger hdd game demos can finally become a reality. I'm sure there will be times when a magazine will try to get a demo exclusive, and we have to wait until the mag is out to get the demo. However I really expect at least 80 percent of the games out there to offer me a playable demo over Xbox Live. Maybe not on day one, but over time when developers/publishers aren't in crunch mode to get these games out at launch.

If I still have to subscribe and wait for Xbox magazine to offer me game demos I will be miffed.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I hope companies consider releasing some old arcade games for live arcade for a few bucks a piece. I wouldn't mind playing some of my old favorites from the comfort of my couch.

If they want a pricing scale I would actually pay for...

Old arcade titles: $2
Old console titles: $5
Entirely new games: $10-20

On PCs, it's called shareware or freeware :lol

agreed. I think if the demand is there, companies like Konami, Activision, EA, and Capcom will release their old stuff on Live Arcade for a few bucks a pop. That back catalog is just sitting there, anyway.

Does it play like Balance on PC ? If so, then rock on :D

Not quite! Ballance was also great, though pretty short (12 levels + 13th, the ultra hard one). I have both games + Gish and they ROCK ON.

has it been announced what sort of things will be on the HDD? Will there be HD video?

I really wish MS would offer some sort of cheap Xbox Live Arcade XDK for homebrew guys who want the chance to make XBL Arcade games.

They could make it so the XDK wasn't as robust, and you couldn't make games with really advanced functionality, but you'd be able to legally make Xbox games.

If they did something like this, and charged like <=$200 for the XDK I'd be all over that shit. THey could include a licensing program where you'd be able to release a game on Live after it passed MS testing, and if it sold, you'd make a percentage of the profits. Hell, I'd probably get involved even if they didn't give me any of the profits back.

I'm really hoping Nintendo does something like this with Revolution as well, as they keep talking about wanting to make it more accessible for smaller devs.

Anyone else wondering why MS doesn't partner with Gametap? Or any of the next gen consoles at that. Gametap is basically what The Phantom was trying to be, which actually wasn't a bad idea as Gametap should show.

Heh, we got you covered. ;)

I am super psyched about this, and the funny thing is that I never even thought about the possibilities of XBL Arcade until recently. I thought that the Revolution was going to get closer to something like this with their downloadable games service, even though this makes much more sense. This is just so awesome on Microsoft's part. It would be a dream come true to get our game on XBLA, and if we become a finalist in at least one of the IGF categories I think we have a glimmer of hope. :)

The potential for the homebrew scene on XBL Arcade is doing more to convince me to buy an X360 at or near launch than the big budget games are right now. As long as the pricing for the XBLA games is reasonable.

Yeah, I'm surprised not many people are talking about Xbox Live Arcade. It could be that MS isn't pushing it as much right now as Nintendo and their Revolution download service. I think Live Arcade has bigger potential. Brand new homebrew applications instead of downloading old games I've already played. I'm sure there will be some old arcade games on XBL Arcade as well. The potential of XBox Live Arcade is pretty exciting, too. Glad MS didn't shelve it after its initial difficulties at trying to figure out how to make it work on Xbox. Checked out your website too off of your profile. Interesting premise for a game.

Heh, thanks. It's not as lame as it sounds, trust me. :D I didn't write the text so it's pretty dorky.

I wonder how much it'll cost for indie devs to make games for XBLA, however. Hope it's cheap.

Right now what's the current process you have to go through in order to get an indie game on XBL Arcade?

Yeah, if anyone here knows the answer to this question please speak up if you can!

Gargage games are pretty big as far as indie developers go....so i dont think its as easy as people are hoping. Best way to find out would be contacting garage games.

I'd imagine the process isn't cheap by any means, which is why I posted my "wish" above.

Well that's the thing, GG didn't actually make the game, an indie dev that liscensed Garage Games' engine made the game. And this is the exciting part. GG is at the forefront for empowering indie developers with their super cheap liscensing of the Torque engine ($100/liscense which is peanuts for what you get). This had made them the biggest indie dev community which means TONS of support and documentation, for a professional grade engine. Now, what this announcement means (and some other stuff I've read) is that the Torque engine has been ported to 360. This is awesome because devs can just code for the Torque engine like normal, and if their game is good enough then I'm sure an agreement will happen with the GG guys who'll then port their game to the 360.

I don't know the details and whether or not GG will supply dev kits to the developers, or how the whole porting relationship will work, but GG has shown that they've very reasonable. I'm extremely excited and interested to see just how well XBA does in regards to selling indie games, because if they make a lot of money out of it, then there'll be far more incentive for indie devs to make their games even better. And with the potential of increased revenue, will hopefully be easier to find funding for their projects.
