[Insider Gaming] Only PlayStation Gets Physical Discs of Upcoming Xbox Games

Not for long.
This is the last generation for physical games, outside of some niche releases.
I don't think Playstation will move away from discs as much as they want to. Theres still lots of people who want physical and this is another thing Sony can lord over Microsoft.

Sony is still pissed about mlb the show going multiplat. This is a way to get them back

So little respect for the consumers of their platform.

I have seen it many times on here about MS giving "lots of options" for people. This is a slap in the face.

It's funny how xbox slowly boiled the frog with exactly what xbox one was trying to do while suggesting they're listening and only temporarily backtracking. In the end they still killed second hand games and require an online connection. They just did it by prioritising a console with no disc option at all and made you download crap even when you buy a disc version. All while pretending they're about "choice".

Microsoft's real intentions regarding always online and physical media NEVER went away after E3 2013.

Anyone who trusted "good guy" Phil is an idiot.

Glad I ditched Xbox after the 360.

Physical games are still a thing here in Australia, at least for PlayStation and Nintendo Systems, and I'm very happy about it

America = World for most of this forum.

No wonder it's a shitty American corporation that's pulling this.

Sony and Nintendo understand the Asian market much more than Microsoft could ever dream of.

Considering Xbox' strategy is "Play Anywhere" across console and PC with only one DIGITAL purchase, I'm not surprised they're killing physical discs for their systems.

I think Xbox's shift to digital only is acceptable through the lens of "Play Anywhere".

When I had an Xbox and played actively in that community, it was my experience that most Xbox gamers don't care about physical games. They've been all digital for a long time. I'm pretty sure there's been analyst data to point to Xbox consumers adopted digital faster than PlayStation consumers.

"Play Anywhere" will become "Play on PC ONLY"

But I mean, are the full games on the disc? If not, its completely worthless to me. Wasn't Doom Eternal just basically a key?
Even if the a game is only 1.0 or the full game is not on the disc, the disc is still sold at a good rate.

It's not like the disc will suddenly be selling at $0.50 because it didn't have the full game. There is a definite, tangible benefit of having a physical disc.

Well no shit. There next console is rumored to just be a PC with a more user friendly windows game mode it boots into. That isn't something malicious on Xbox's part when that becomes the case. It's the reality of their hardware. Not sure if you were trying for a snarky "Gotcha" or if you were thinking logically like me.

Used to enjoy taking physical games around friends and using smart delivery to do some couch multiplayer gaming. And the game having some resell value attached to it.

They are still planning a standard console that will get revealed next year

How can you tell if Phil is lying? His lips are moving.

And that's why I am skipping every single one of those releases. Fuck that shitty company.
Have they even got anything of worth coming out in the future?

I honestly can't think of anything I'd even want to buy on the Xbox, disc or no :pie_thinking:

Oh, I suppose that Perfect dark with the big chin looking bloke, or that Fable with the ugly looking bloke

I guess 🤷‍♂️

Never said i like it, just that i can understand it from their perspective

For players, physical offers more benefits than digital.

Thing is digital is a tad more convenient, but it offers corporations way more control.

So the problem is that many players are giving more control to corporations by going digital (and some are even preachers for this religion), which are not our friends, for less benefits.

Idiocracy was prophetic.

Gears of War: E and Everwild if that was to ever come out were two games I was looking forward to. But to be honest, I'm done with Microsoft. All that fat piece of shit Phil Spencer ever talked about was giving Xbox players options but each day those options are being taken away from them.

Me with my massive shelf of Xbox discs:

There are very likely multiple skus once again but one will be a traditional Xbox home console and others could be handled by the likes of Asus again
What's your source on this? Every report I see when I google info about the next Xbox console results in articles about the next Xbox being a "PC Hybrid" like device that will just be a (my conjecture now) a more power console-like version of how that new ROG Xbox Ally will run games in a special OS container but they're all still just PC SKU games.

You are right that physical has obvious benefits, but like 70-80% of the PS players and 90% of the Xbox players are already digital only. Players chose convenience.

He is the source, until Jizz and Tom write articles about it next year.

Makes sense given their pullback from retail space, and y'know, their whole stated strategy of Play Anywhere and Everything Is An Xbox. Can't really do that tied to physical media.

The digitization of the industry has been a long term goal of Microsoft, since the latter days of the 360. They did have hopes at one point for being an excellent competitor to Sony and Nintendo, but it's pretty clear that was a push to establish market share and as soon as they did it was right back to the same sociopathic enterprise software company behavior Microsoft has always exhibited.

If these are yet again license on disc for PS5, that's a skip.

Can believe K KeplerL2 for those who don't like me saying things :)

Nah it's just a normal console.

In response to

It's not going to be a traditional console tho, that's for sure. Makes zero business sense anymore for Microsoft.

It'll be a "console", as in a PC with a SFF/NUC console-style form factor, running a custom version of Windows with a more streamlined version of what's coming in the ROG Xbox Ally, and probably using some mix of emulation/translation layer/recompile for extensive Xbox BC support.

And it's probably gonna cost $150 - $200 more than a PS6 for PS6-equivalent performance. But at least it'll be upgradable, unlike a PS6.

And I have been on the hybrid bandwagon for quite awhile but there will also be a traditional console

What pisses me off about this is that they then go and talk about caring about preservation while simultaneously being the most DRM heavy brand of all. And worst of all, the propaganda actually works judging by how many people comment about how they are so pro consumer.

More examples of distant #3 out of 3 trying to dictate the industry. Theyd be out of the business ifbthey weren't backed by microsoft and yet they are able to force stupid things on the rest.

It doesn't make sense to sell disc's for a system that is eliminating them. It seems strange to me that people still want them. You always have to download tons of updates anyway.

It's weird - I have both PS5 (as main) and Series X and id happily be digital only on Series X but not PS5.....

Maybe it's the option of much cheaper keys available for Xbox whereas second hand discs are a lot cheaper for PS.

I've already said my part about why this is a mistake, but thinking about it further it's insulting to users who bought a Series X with a disc drive.

Makes absolutely sense, they want to push Game Pass even more and disc games are a pain in the ass for every manufactorer and dev and they would love to ged rid off.

So they are okay with abandoning the wishes of 20% of their userbase?

It's insanely disrespectful! Especially considering the people that bought the Series X are probably the more hardcore Xbox fan.

It has been like this for a while now. When was the last Xbox game that FULLY came on the disc? Halo Infinite? Maybe FH5? Every game since has been partially on disc or no disc at all.
