[Insider Gaming] Only PlayStation Gets Physical Discs of Upcoming Xbox Games

So in a year, there will be rumor threads again comparing Xbox Next vs PS6, tflops, AI tops, etc... like in 2019 with Oberon and Xbox, how time flies xDD.

Can believe @KeplerL2 for those who don't like me saying things :)

In response to

And I have been on the hybrid bandwagon for quite awhile but there will also be a traditional console

Well they can try another traditional console if they want. But without actual software exclusives, and without some subsidization approach (due to the brand being perceived lesser MS'd have to subsidize more vs. SIE or Nintendo simply to attract similar attention beyond their shrinking diehard fanbase), it's going to fail.

Just point blank, it's going to fail. So a new console only works out for them if it's closer to a PC/console hybrid leaning on Windows for main function, but with an even better version of what the ROG Xbox Ally is doing, and maybe some dual-boot option to an Xbox OS partition with the Xbox Store removed.

At least that's how I see it :/. But hey, we'll see what MS does, because they'll probably start talking about it officially next year.

I'm totally up for adoption. Just saying.

Let's pray for new retro consoles. They might save physical media.

Hopefully.

No matter what Xbox attempts at this point they are doomed, that ship has sailed

They might as well rip the bandaid and just announce killing the console division

It feels like they're trying to save face by doing this PC transition and, well, if they can eventually get Windows gaming to feel as seamless as Xbox OS, that'd be a good thing. If they can get full Xbox BC in Windows and make it stable, that'd be a good thing.

But they really could also be doing all of that while retiring the 'Xbox' branding as it currently exists. There's just way too much baggage with it at this point.

I know key discs/cartridges suck, because they are the worst of both options: got to put in the disc/cart to play what is essentially a digital download, but once they're downloaded they are basically a physical game that you can use your way.

Last for Xbox anyway. Obviously Nintendo still supports physical for another generation and I expect the same will be true of PlayStation.
Sure, there will be an expensive (probably $100) bluray addon for PS6, which itself will do more to kill physical than any "benefits" digital brings.

Nice to have, but why pay $100 when you could just about buy a single Nintendo game for Switch 2 with that money.

Individuals can do what they want, but if there is still a drive available for PS6 then clearly Sony thinks there is enough demand to warrant it. I'm sure they would much rather be all digital by now.

I think the idea is that Sony will soak people who will stick with physical.

And since the main reason people still do physical is to get the game cheaper...

Shawn Layden recently made the point that the global reach of PlayStation necessitates physical media options.

"Play Anywhere" will become "Play on PC ONLY"

the force awakens GIF by Star Wars

Of course, some of those PC's will basically be Xbox consoles. And Xbox branded portable "consoles".

But it doesn't necessitate them releasing physical options in every country. One wonders if PS fans in the US (for example) might be faced with having to import a PS6 disc drive and the discs for any game they wish to own physically. Interesting times ahead.

My guess is if they have the drive it will be available globally, but yes.....we shall see.

So, this is for the folks that just love to have useless plastic boxes for the shelf? :messenger_tears_of_joy: Just buy the digital version, LOL.
It's for people who don't like to be tied to corporate masters and their digital storefronts like slaves. It's for people who want choices and options when buying/selling their games. It's for people who value preservation.

There is literally ZERO advantage to buying a game digitally outside of the convenience of disc/card swapping.

Currently looking into whole sale collection purchasing for all my physical games. I'm in my late 40's and there is no way I am ever going to play final fantasy, smb 3, or little samson on my physical nes(s....all 40 of them) ever again.
Missed the boat during covid...should have cashed out then.

Hopefully when I'm in my mid to late 50's I will be able to resell my steam, nintendo swtich, PS Store, and XBox digital games. Then I will coast to an early retirement.
(ill be dead before then for sure)

The vast majority of games I play, I play once and I'm done. After that they sit uselessly in my gaming library. At least I can sell those "plastic boxes".

I don't think you can sell the boxed copies that just have the digital code, one-time use in my experience. I understand the value of the disks, but not these. If they are on sale at a retailer sure, but other than that I don't see it.

Ah....ok. Yeah, the code in a box is definitely a waste all around.

You realize that games I was talking about are directly tied to the digital store and can't be resold, right? The Xbox version of these games is literally just a box for your shelf. If you get it for a nice price, sure, but it's still a digital game. 🤷‍♂️

I didn't expect the clapback on that post, for sure. :messenger_beaming:

It is also equally important to be in every distribution channel possible, It's Sony's DNA. Sony Music still sells CDs/LPs and Sony movies are avaliable on every platform, including blu-ray.

Sony needs to keep up the momentum into next Gen. However with the pro being the latest and digital first console, I'm not hopeful sadly.

I have high hopes they will keep the optional disc drive moving forward, but what actually would be awesome is that they would offer an optional CD/DVD reader to read original PS1 and PS2 discs to use with their emulator, now that people are starting to get used to external disc drives.

There are countries where the monthly bandwidth cap is still that of downloading one game or less. I guess they are completely giving up on those countries based on console sales numbers.
