Xbox 360 - It's Real!
Considering that Microsoft has chosen not to go with an Intel CPU for its new Xbox console, it came as quite a surprise to find an Xbox 360 lurking on the third floor of the Moscone Center.

The pre-production Xbox 360 was part of a Microsoft Media Center demonstration, and rather than playing games, the 360 was being used as a Media Center extended device. Streaming all its content from a Media Center PC a few feet away, the 360 showed that it could happily playback High Definition video remotely.

The video that was being streamed was 720p HD content, but Microsoft assured me that the 360 will be capable of showing 1080 HD content for the ultimate High Definition experience.

The Xbox 360 was hooked up to a Samsung DLP rear projection TV via component video. It’s a shame that it wasn’t connected via HDMI, but the Microsoft representative assured me that the 360 can output over HDMI, but that there isn’t a cable available at present.

I have to say that the Xbox 360 is definitely an improvement on the original Xbox as far as design goes. Despite not being a finished model, the unit on show looked pretty good and would definitely fit nicely in my living room. It also seemed fairly quiet in operation, although I was assured that the production devices will be far quieter.

Stumbling across an Xbox 360 was definitely a pleasant surprise, and not something I was expecting to see at IDF. Despite Intel’s lack of input with the Xbox 360, the fact that this device will seamlessly integrate with the Digital Home concept means that Intel couldn’t ignore it. It’s only a month or so until Microsoft will be showing off production versions of the Xbox 360 and I can’t wait to get my paws on one.

Ethernet cable?

I guess not even Microsoft wants to pay $100 for Wifi.

The countdown on origenxbox.com must lead to the date it becomes old to bag on the SKUs.

I like the matching white disc tray. fuck that silver shit.

Yep. The more I look at it. The more I prefer it.

Attack! Attack!

On another note, I "heard" a "final" kit today and it was dead silent. I don't mean in comparison to the early betas, I mean, library quiet.

Good to know :)

It's a CONSOLE!, fool
No, I mean it! :P

When do systems usually go into production before launch? Because it seems that MS hasnt even started yet...

Should that cause any concern for system defects?

depends on what it was doing. During movies and streaming it runs on only 1 fan. Other tasks and the gpu fan will turn on.

I think the assembly lines have been manufacturing them for a little while now, but not at production capacity. This is the time when they are letting the machines make them so that they can test them out, specifically to avoid defects.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that first part though.

Xbox went into production 3rd week of september 2001 for a november 15th launch (was november 8th, but 9/11 forced a delay of plastics)

Yeah, I remember reading that

So now instead of getting composite cables and having to buy component ones, I'll be getting component cables and having to buy an HDMI cable.

It's always something.

"MS XBOX 360 HDMI Cable: $299"
Seriously. It would be at least $60, since component cables are $40 and were marked up 100% since Xbox, to begin with...

I hate to sound like a tard, but what high def content can you get on a PC currently?

xbox 360 trailers!

windows media content samples of imax movies!

ummm ummm ummm

T2 Judgement Day and a thing about Alaska, and presumably recorded HDTV. If you have a graphics card that's up to it.

T2 judgement day doesn't really work in windows media player. *looks at T2 extreme edition and cries*

You can get tons of HD content if you know the right newsgroups. :D

Shit, B-T can get you a bunch of 720p WM9 videos easily. 5th Element is a must download. Only around 4 gigs and looks great.

4gigs on BitTorrent can conceivably take days, and every second it becomes more and more likely that the MPAA logs your IP.

Making it ugly doesn't solve the heat/air problem.

Plus I see vents... so umm ya.... good point?

The PS3 has enough freakin' I/O ports to vent a considerable amount of heat.

Every console should come with a boomerang.

it's hard to disagree with that.

As much as we rag on the PS3 controller, how do we know it's not really comfortable?

it's just a goofy looking dualshock, so it's probably fine for many games. I didn't think they would change it much since it's only lousy for shooting/racing games.
