Xbox 360 Specifications! - LIVE 2 info

What is the X360 chip based off of? I'm assuming it's based off the POWER architecture correct? Any info here would be appreciated. I still can't see how a tri-core IBM chip at 3.2Ghz is anything but $$$$$, unless it's really dumbed down.

Revolution, PlayStation 3 and X360 will all have CPUs *based* on the Power/Altivec architecture /instruction set as alluded to by arhra....

*fun fact*

Did you know that the main CPU in the GameCube (Gekko) is *also* a PPC-based CPU developed by IBM???

Even though at the time Apple was offering the Power Mac G4 (Sawtooth) PPC, the Gekko was more advanced than Sawtooth in many ways (180nm manufacturing, first ever processor to use copper transistors) and yes, the 485Mhz Gekko was/is faster than a 500Mhz Sawtooth G4 in some ways

*/fun fact*

At any rate, the Power architecture is an IBM (not apple) FAMILY of chips(well....motorola too, though they are not actively involved anymore, IIRC) and has been used in everything from Macs to GameCubes to Segas Model 3 board (66Mhz back then :lol...geez how time flies) and now with next gen consoles (all 3 of them)...it is IBMs archetecture and is the foundation of everything they do that is CPU-ish...

Here is what they have to say on thier website:

http://www-306.ibm.com/chips/techlib/techlib.nsf/productfamilies/PowerPC

IBM PowerPC® microprocessors, embedded processors and cores can help you meet your specific design needs. As members of the IBM Power Architecture family of products that power everything from handhelds to mainframes, enterprise class servers to video game consoles, IBM PowerPC products deliver high performance, power optimization, and excellent value.

As you can see, Power is much more than just about Apple.....it can be, and is, customizable per application....

P.S. Don't listen to the "WTF are you talking about, dude" replies as we can't really expect you to keep up on all the hardware details out there :D

Ok so the new console is powerfull enough. All the new console will prolly be powerfull enough to feel "next-gen" imo.
Then there's the silver Xbox live but i can't really play. Silver is free i guess? but i can't really play.

Still waiting for my new killer app or incentive to go for a Xbox360. ;(
By the way Microsoft, free online play would have bought me instantly.

Free on the weekends only. But that should be good enough to get people addicted and become assimilited into gold membership.

most online play is on the weekends too. I wonder if they'll count friday nights as part of the weekend too.

Hell, they would have really had me if they just gave away the system and games. :rolleyes.

Yeah go spend your money on everything we make you think it's worth it even if it isn't. Online play could easily be done for free without an itch to their wallets.

NOTE: silver live is still a nice idea and i aggree that it's the next best thing to free online play.

I see no problem with paying for an online service. I have only been online on my PS2 once, with ESPN NFL 2K4. I'm not familar with their service and setup. However, everybody says that XBL kills it. With that in mind, my subscription to this is really nothing. With that in mind, time to go kill in Halo 2

Shit.... how could we forget !!! Cisco routers and server storage for online databases are chump change....

You're right. That must be exactly the reason why i didn't paid for pretty much any online game ever and that even some MMORPG are free!

(well....motorola too, though they are not actively involved anymore, IIRC)
they still make a ton of ppc products (well, they spun the semiconductor off into a semi-independent company, Freescale), and are still working on new developments, but they're focussed on the embedded marketplace, not the high-end server/desktop/console type markets (and they still produce G4s for Apple).

hey I just noticed something (yes I am slow) ... the increase of both the L2 cache and the main system memory is the same from Xbox to Xbox360 - 8x.

L2: 128K to 1024k (1 MB)
system memory: 64 MB to 512 MB

I'm not sure it means every weekend is free, more like the occasional weekend. Like they do with some subscription TV channels in the UK like FilmFour. Every now and then they announce a weekend is free to view for anyone.

Give people a taste to try and encourage more of them to subscribe.

"Free Xbox Live weekends"

Sounds like specific weekends to me, it would have been 'at weekends' if it was all the time.

Cripes Wyzdom! If you don't want to pay for it then don't. I gladly give them my ~$4.17/month. It's the cost of one game/year. If you don't have it, you don't know what you're missing!

and by extra money hes not joking, were not talkin about a 20 dollar component/composite cable . they run over 100 bucks for a good one

Actually, you can buy a DVI to HDMI or HDMI to DVI adapter from Ram Electronics for $25. A 15' DVI to HDMI cable runs about $52. (USD)

you missed the earlier posts. DVI / HDMI cable is really cheap. Because the signal is digital, you have to get a LOT of interference to really start losing IQ. You're pissing away money if you're dropping a lot on high quality cables.

GC came out in 2001. In 2001, Apple was using 733, 800, and 866Mhz G4s (PowerPC 7450) in their Quicksiver PowerMacs.

"Sawtooth G4" came out in 1999.

It's more for the principle that anything else. Something sells at 100$ nobody buys. If you suggest them to buy the same thing but in 10 transactions of 10$, most will buy. To me, it's the same thing. And the more you invite money in gaming, the more money will rules it. One day you'll need to be rich to be in the first 1000 persons of a score table.... wich is wrong imo. All of this starts with small transactions. They will teach you to banalise paying for stuff and they will rape you of your every penny.
It's easier not to seed a tree instead of making it fall when it's all grown up.

And i did nothing wrong buddy, i don't pay for online gaming so far ;)

The entertainment value of game are going up. I don't mind paying for that; the new Halo 2 maps rule the fucking world. Best $6 I've spent in months. If more developers do that, I'm fine with it.

I'm almost certain this must've been pointed out by someone on some board by now, but the machine guns in Halo 2 hold exactly 360 rounds of ammo.

PS3's CPU would only need 4SPEs at the same clockrate to be 1.75x. My expected setup of 6SPEs, at that same clockrate (3.2Ghz) would yield 2.4x the difference. It's very doable, in fact even that 3x figure that's been floating around, for the CPU side at least, looks more feasible if the X360 figure is 76.8Gflops (though it may be 96Gflops if there's a FPU lying around on those cores).

Doable and cost effective are two totally different things. Lots of things can be done, but will it. Don't think so.

Free live on weekends is awesome, being able to transfer over music/movies from my PC is also awesome. Using my iPod to play music on X360 is awesome (can you copy over music from an iPod?). The controller is awesome. Awesome is X360 :D

Downloading extra content is a different matter. You can enjoy the whole product you bought without paying anything more. Extra content is there IF YOU WANT. This i aggree to pay. If you like your game enough, the small buck is worth getting more out of your game.

I'm loving this "media center" angle for the X360, I can finally have these great features out of the box without the need for a mod. I'm really hoping for the same from Sony, if they don't deliever in this grand fashion I'm going to very pissed. I don't mind Sony doing it's own thing, but if they release another HDD with none of these cool features to take advantage of it, it would be a very stupid move on their part. I want one box under my TV that can give me games, movies, music, pictures, etc....basically what Sony did with the PSP but for the TV, and with a massive HDD.

Edit: Wait, streaming data from PC? Does that mean I can't save it on the HDD? Also, I hope someone can clarify whether or not we can save music on the HDD from a portable music player.

Being able to transfer songs from an Ipod is a genius move. My major complaint with custom soundtracks was having to switch out so many CDs in order to get the playlists you wanted.

No free online play = no sale. Along with all the nickle and diming they'll be doing with bonus content for games, it's just not in my best interest to support the system.

It sounds great for those people with the money, but I like the idea of buying a game from the store and knowing it's the complete game on disc and FREE online play.

And you're kidding yourself if you don't think a large majority of devs will create the bonus content they'll end up selling during the development phase. Publishers don't pay these guys to sit around after a game has shipped to create new content.

After watching Microsoft charge $50 a year and get 2 million subscribers (i think?) as well as every PC MMORPG getting a monthly fee, I doubt Sony or Nintendo will have free online next round. They know they can make big money off it now in the console realm.

I hope you aren't right. I understand it's a good business model to bring in extra revenue, but games will already be $60-70 most likely. If Nintendo and Sony both decide to charge for online play, I guess I'll have to find a new hobby.

That or I'll stick to PC gaming.

I don't know if all console devs will charge for Online gameplay, but as far as microtransations go, I'm sure Sony will work something similar out as well. That said, if you don't want to buy the extras, don't. Oh man I don't have an exclusive tricked out car! Woe is me.

Is the $60-70 price point confirmed for next-gen? If so, I'll be the biggest CAG the world has ever seen (mover over Wario).

Uhmm, that I seriously doubt - Gekko is a modified 750cx core(same PPC cores that fathered G3), it's a generation behind G4 in most ways.

It probably had the advantage in memory access speed (large onchip L2 cache and low latency main mem), but aside for that G4 should have it beat in every other way.

Yeah the micro transaction thing kinda worries me. And at $70 a game online should be free. But at $50 or even close to $60, I can see a fee being reasonable.

So when you guys say online free, do you mean that DEVS may charge an extra fee on top of the XBL yearly fee? Unless it's an MMO game (which I don't play) they shouldn't charge more than the XBL fee.

Dont be silly..this is MS we are talk'n about, they have the final say so

Well what I mean is that if games go up to $70 a game it should cover online as well. No Xbox Live, PS3 fee or Revolution fee, no publisher fee, expect maybe on MMO games. At $50 or even 60 i'd pay a fee for Live, etc. plus a MMO fee (which I don't really play anyways)

Only after 9pm. Or pay $7 a month for your nights to start at 7pm.

And the new Xbox live should also have an option to pay per minute. I could buy a 30 days card and actually play 30 days long with it. I hate when i have to play at a determined time to make my money worth.

You think they'll kill 75% of their SPEs and go with a 2-SPE chip?

I look forward to next week :)

I hope the 360 is being released on a weekend! :P

I also do wonder if the Silver/Gold deals will be available to Xbox owners.
