Xbox 360 unveiled, pics inside (Engadget)

:lol you play games because of how the console itself looks? ::scratches head::

This was what I was getting at in my earlier post. Everyone is excited about the next gen, including me. I'm just surprised so many people have such strong opinions I guess.

Microsoft has a lot of things to unveil at E3, those leaks won't affect the Xbox 360 communication. There will be great games, and especially great FPS (and not just Perfect Dark 0 ...).

P.s. I hope the light on that thing can be changed to red :

Where were you when the first picture was released?

I expect PS3 to be about twice the size of the PSTwo. About the size I had expected the X360 to be.
why do you expect that exactly?
a 9 core cpu running at 4 GHz would be encased inside a box that's only twice the size of the slimline ps2, along with an all new standard optical drive and state of the art nVidia gpu, ports, buses and power supply?
nice expectations. not practical, but nice.

System's form is nice, but the face needs an overhaul. It's just not aesthetically pleasing.

Controller OTOH is hot shit, pure sex.

Overall: Who gives a fuck what the console looks like, as long as the games are great. People put too much weight on console design, when the controller should be heavily critizised (as that is what matters when interacting with a game).

I don't want this to sound like damage control, so first of all I will say that if MS has done an awful job keeping information regarding the industrial design of the console a secret in the last month.

However, there are several factors stacked against MS from having a clean "surprise" showing at E3 2005 compared to previous console unveilings. Several of them they can only blame on themselves:

1) Huge increase in interest by the general public in gaming (so new systems are awaited with much more anticipation, increasing the chances of pre-launch leaks)

2) Continued proliferation of the internet, camera phones, and general information sharing technology

3) Microsoft's desire to have a tremendous announcement this May unparalled to any console announcement in history. When the PS2 was announced, hardcore gamers took notice and waited with bated breath, but few casual gamers knew anything of the PS2 until it was already a success in the marketplace. Now with the X360 announcement, MS wants all consumers interested in entertainment (gaming or otherwise) to take notice. All major gaming and non-gaming publications already have access to screenshots, final hardware renders, logos etc. much sooner and in greater quantity than they have in the past. Oh, and let's not forget the 30 min informercial they've secured on global television. That introduces hundreds if not thousands of potential leaks.

"Where were you when the first picture was released?"

in a cave...

... actually, i was back in my home town...

... describing that place as a "cave" would be disrespectful to some of the fantastic caves around the world.

??? Controller S is by far the best controller on the market.

That system looks like ass. Microsoft certainly gets a big F on the aesthetics.

EDIT: I should qualify, I think the current PS2 looks stupid too (better than the lunchbox Gamecube, though). In fact, I can't think of a single piece of consumer electronics I think looks nice. Just make them f'in functional and I'll be happy.

The final system will look sweet, this is just a frickin camera phone picture for gods sake in a poorly lit room. When it's unveiled it will look much better, but you can't please the MS haters of GA. There certainly are plenty of them in this thread.

Remember the last time there was leaked xbox 360 shots?

one was a promo shot of the console and a cameraphone shot of the controller.

People were praising the console and completely trashing the controller.

Now there was a promo shot of the controller released and a cameraphone shot of the console.

NOW the console is getting ragged on and people are praising the controller.

Dopeyfish am confused :<

It's not about being an MS hater - I prefer Xbox over other consoles and will pick up Xbox 360 on launch.

It's about Microsoft sucking in design vision. While Xbox 360 is not nearly as ugly as the monster known as Xbox, it's still not a "WOW!". Although to be fair, Microsoft doesn't have much experience in hardware, so it's hard for them to deliver in industrial design front, so I guess this effort is ok from that background. I expect PS3 to be visionary and cool.

controller s sucks, duke forever!

hell, i'd rather use a dual shock 1 than a s

good thing the 360 controller has addressed some of the issues with the s, like placement of back/start...

i'll have to wait and see how the black/white replacements work out tho...

and the two tone color looks sweeeeeeet

This is also why I think MS will have a hard time cutting into the Playstation fanbase. It isn't just that Sony Playstation is the most popular line: Sony is also a consumer electronics company. Playstation line is a natural extension to the Sony product line and an area of expertise they have over MS.

Looks ok....better than the xbox. What does it matter anyway? I'm more interested in what I'll play on it that what it looks like. I guess that's the same reason why I don't obsess over boxart. YOU CAN'T PLAY BOX ART!

IMO, all the consoles this gen looked horrible. The Gamecube was a lunchbox, the xbox was a painted black brick, and the PS2 was a lopsided, reject vcr.

Also, though I'm not excited by the color of the controller I'm interested to see (or more specifically feel/experience) the changes.

I am probably alone on this but I prefer the original Xbox's look.

I HATE that the top of the 360 is fatter than the bottom (when vertical) - this is why I didn't like the PS2's design - I like symmetry. I will just never be able to position this new MS console vertically or horizontally without thinking "that just looks wrong!"

If both ends were the same size, if the disk tray door was white like the rest of the console, and if the disk tray was centered, I would really dig this design. As it is though it's just all too "off".

Love the controller, but the console just looks like a mess to me.

And that camera looks like it was shipped in directly from the 80s.

BTW someone mentioned that remote button could say "Live TV" not "Line In". I thought the same thing - no-one's commented on it since it was suggested though.

It doesnt look anywhere near finished, my only irk is the concave. If it was totally flat then yeah.... i would rock out with my cock out.

It might be bland due to the fact that we'll have the option of using face plates in the future. The design itself looks nice, i just wish it was smaller.

Don't see what's so special about the controller. It has pretty much the same functionality and layout as the old one. I mean, seriously, it does nothing to advance video gaming.

Will that be Microsoft's overall contribution to the industry with thier new console? "Same stuff you had the last 5 years, only shinnier!!"

If it ain't broke, why fix it? If you want innovation wait till Rev is released, then you can stick the heating/vibrating controller on your nut sack with wreckless abandon. For the rest of us, we'll be gaming on traditional pads with no problems.

what is this talk of not final hardware?
MS would go through the hassle of showing this on a MTV worldwide event and not be final?

Not final and the launch date is November?

Get serious... live with it, it will grow on you, many got used to that huge black-green Brick

Cut them some slack. Not everyone can come up with a digital click on analog triggers, you know.

I don't think the console look that bad. It's just not perfect.

But every one forgot the best looking console : N64 pikachu :D

I think the d-pad going to be difficult to reach, this is the only thing I see wrong with the controller.
On a side note I am getting the feeling that people prefer analogue sticks to d-pads. I am one who thinks the PS2's d-pad was great to put it mildly. I just find analogue sticks fiddly, comments/thoughts anybody ?

didn't they make online gaming totally mainstream? that's a pretty big advancement you know. IIRC nintendo...never mind ;)

At this point Gyroscope controllers don't sound like such a bad idea after all. Controllers still cannot reach maximum functionality with several genres of games so regurgitating the same old designs for next gen seems rather pointless. The console doesn't look that bad just 1 or 2 not so great design choices and the color doesn't mesh well with its casing. If PD0 is everything it is supposed to be that design wouldn't stop me from owning one.

mainstream=pay to play??? give me a break..........i call mainstream a game like Counter strike or day of defeat..........where i dont have to buy a game a then pay even more to play it online.........i really hope Nintendo does this right.........if they dont they surely wont see my money to play on their online service.
