I believe this is where they "duct taped" a flashlight to the end of a gun so you didn't need to keep switching to the flashlight to look around.

But then you would eliminate most of the challenge of the game since most monsters lurk in the dark :P

Bad gameplay idea =/= challenge

no, not really. There are a whole lot of games out there where the only challenge comes from bad gameplay.

I think the point you're trying to make is: challenge =/= good gameplay
perhaps?

Even after playing Doom 3 on the PC, I'm pumped for the Xbox version. And this Collector's Edition is a must for me. I can't wait.

Wow-sounds cool. My friends are I are buying Doom 3 the minute it releasess on Xbox. But to have Ultimate Doom and its death match and coop play is even better. Maybe I'm spoiled but I wish they would emplement online play in Ultimate Doom as well. Its all good though, the game is even more mine because of this news.

No, I'm talking about the idea of putting the flashlight as a standalone equipement. It's a bad design idea, and was regarded as a "challenge" for the game.

I loved it. Mayhaps I'm a masochist?

I think the first Halo nailed the implimentation of the flashlight - you could use it at any time, but it was set to a recharging battery so you could not use it 100% of the time; it often runs out in the middle of dark firefights and forces you to resource it like weapon ammo.

Hmm, color me intrigued... I may have to pick this puppy up. The fact my PC is too much of a sissy to run the PC game, but I wanna see what the hub-bub is about, is an added argument.

the fact this will probably be the best console conversion for the first 2 doom games makes this a must buy for me :)

if doom I and II are playable on XBL then i would have no choice but to start thinking about possibly considering a purchase of this game.

but at the sametime, why buy this game when you have unreal championship 2 and timesplitters 3 coming out? yeah the graphics are nice, but in 20 years these graphics are going to look like shit

Any info on the Doom ports? Will they be upgraded in any way? WIll they remain as pixelicious as the originals? This is really cool news! I'd love to play through Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 again with Dolby surround sound from the comfort of the living room.

You actually used the flashlight in Halo? The only time I EVER needed it was in those small shafts on the very first level.

Half-Life did this.

And man, Xbox Doom 3 is ugly. I know the lighting is a huge deal and all, but the polycount is really, really low. Tenebrae Quake 1 seems to almost looks better, no joke.

I would believe this.. the game was a huge memory and gpu whore on the PC. I can't even begin to imagine how much it must have been scaled down considering it could run at medium quality 640x480 on a high end cpu 512mb system with a geforce 3 (the closest thing to the xbox gpu, no?). Which is quite a shame..

Anyone have xbox screenshots?

OK.. it looks bad.. pretty bad.. pretty damn bad..

texture quality seems to have suffered the most, but it was expected with 64 mbs..

REALLY like the boxart :)

hmmm, didnt one of the 1up guys play a recent build of Doom3 xbox and was pleasantly surprised? i have heard other reports they it is running quite nicely: fps...blah blah blah...

im sure that VV didnt just simply scale down the pc version and try and make the huge square box fit into the very small round hole.

in addition to the cooment above, i do hope the ports of the earlier Dooms are somthing more than just 'mere' ports...

I dunno- if co-op is tight and well implemented, this goes onto the must-buy list. The extra DOOM games almost make it mandatory.

i don't remember the batteries in half life as being rechargable? you had to pick up battery packs, I think.

I think you are thinking of the Suit rechargers you could pick up (instead of going to a recharge station).

I saw this on my friends new PC the other night - it looked absolutely shit hot... while there's no way this version will look as good as that did, I'm not planning on upgrading my PC outside of more hard drive space for quite a while.

And +10000000 for the Ultimate Doom pack port. They're probably dated and cack in multiplayer compared to most stuff, but as a piece of memorabilila, it's one hell of an 'extra'.

I'm in!

The thing is, Doom and Doom II still have better singleplayer (and coop) than almost any FPS today.

There hasn't been anything as fast, and the monsters and weapons are perfect.

UT2003/2004 is 10000x as fast as Doom was.

I was talking about singleplayer and co-op. Doom's deathmatch certainly isn't worth it today. And Quake 3 is 10000x as fast as UT2004. :p
