Xbox Game Pass Retro Announced

Tried playing QFG on my PC at work but couldn't; adjust the stats sheet on my keyboard. All seemed to stream OK though.

Will test a bit more when I get home!

Also noticed that the app is called Pleasantville ... lol

My retro MechWarrior game pass edition

They better not dare to take (the rest of) these games out of Gog.

Do not enshitificate retro too.
I'd love them to put the mechwarrior games onto GOG in the first place

I tried this out last night and it works great.
I'm glad Microsoft/Activision was able to work out a deal with Atari/Antstream.

Just like with the the Xbox Live Arcade on the X360, lag isn't the issue. That hard part is getting the control down, as all these old 2600 games were designed around the 2600 joystick, not a dpad or analog thumb stick. On the X360, I found the best input device that I owned was the Capcom Fight pad.

I played H.E.R.O. last night and was able to get #3 on the leaderboards using just the standard Series X controller.

Looking forward to play the SNES and Saturn/PlayStation versions of MechWarrior and MechWarrior 2. I never did finish MechWarrior on the SNES and I need to right that wrong.

So understanding what it is, I thought these would be downloadable but looks like that isn't the case... and you are at the mercy of a stable network connection

Again I see many people bitching about this "who would want to play this"... Well those are good games, mostly, so why not...

Good move from MS, I hope they do more of this soon.

I had some fun with this. Ideally they load more titles from other gens. Quicker loads to start titles too.

PS. any Xbox Gaffers add me to Xbox. Gamer tag is my username here.

It doesn't appear to be working. I can't launch a single game. I just get errors. This is on PC and XBX.

Edit: Nevermind, working now. No mouse support for paddle games, though? And A&B buttons for Decathlon instead of the stick? Yeesh.
The buttons can be remapped. I remapped the running to left and right on the dpad. Quickly moving my finger left and right across the dpad is almost as fast as running with the 2600 joystick.

Great! We're preserving valuable classics! Sign me up!
Oh, wait, they want me to literally sign up for a constant, paid-for subscription, and we can't own a single one of these games.

...

Anyone using this?

Every time I try to start a game I get something went wrong starting your session error on every game.

I keep fucking up the right before I get the gold medal for the challenge in H.E.R.O.

It's kinda fun though. One of the more playable 2600 games today

I use it on both my Series X and PC and it works fine. All the 2600 games work great. The performance on the other games as far as emulation and streaming goes, varies from poor to playable.

Why would a pc player pay for a sub to play these retro games when we can run them better natively, with better graphics settings, without streaming?
Who says PC players sub for this? I sub because I get to play a game or 2 each month I like.

More games added

Retro Classics — new games for August 2025

  • The Adventures of Willy Beamish — Sega CD (1993)
  • Caesar III — Windows 9x (1998)
  • Climber 5 — Atari 2600 (2003)
  • The Colonel's Bequest — Amiga (1990)
  • Private Eye — Atari 2600 (1984)
  • Oystron — Atari 2600 (1997)
  • Shootin' Gallery — Atari 2600 (1982)
  • Wing War — Atari 2600 (1983)

What do you think - is there a realistic chance that big RPG series like Wizardry, Ultima and Might & Magic will be added someday? I know they're available on GOG. But I am secretly hoping to be able to play those games with a controller on my Xbox someday.

What I don't understand is, why did they port over the 1993 Gabriel Knight's game, but there is NO option to have subtitles with the speech? You'd be better of getting the GOG version in that case...I had uninstalled the app to play these games, as there wasn't much on there apart from Heart of China that took my interest..

Yeah, this fact always turns me right off this utter nonsense.

I'd happily rebuy a library of my old games for a few pound to have them all on different systems if need be, but to have them as rentals?

Fuck that. I'll emulate.

Why they don't make these available to buy is beyond me. Thankfully I have some retro handhelds with most of these on there. Just would like to play them on my Xbox.

Yep! That's why I never sign up for most subscription services. I hate 'renting' games or movies. Unless it is a full series to binge watch (like Andor) then I won't subscribe. NSO.......come on! I would buy most of the 1st Party Nintendo games on Switch (many would). Not paying to 'rent' them. I'll find other means.

Just discovered this last week on accident. They really did a poor job with visibility on this project but ill dive in this weekend and have a look for myself

Same here..

I did buy that lifetime purchase of that Antstream arcade from the Xbox store. I'm not generally a fan of streaming games either but I thought I'd give it a go, and to be fair, it's not that bad..

But it comes back around again that it's infact streaming, there's no real ownership and the library is no way complete of what there could be. Not to mention the PS1 version of Loaded doesn't have licensed music, and that is an utter insult for that game!

Its okay if you're not tech savvy and want to play Retro, but once again, it's all very.. lackluster. You could fit the complete C64 library alone on just about anything these days.
