Xbox Live Fall 2012 Dashboard Public Beta - Signup Now

oh joy new update i havent downloaded yet, right before the RE Demo and JSR come out. should be fun coming home from work to download all of that shit...

yeah it looks a lot better, its still a complete fucking mess of an app though. i have too many issues with it to even begin to list them all.

i hate it so much.

I set my favorites to SF Giants, MLB, SF 49ers, NFL, and NBA. It works great to me. I can watch a series of videos all pertaining to my favorite teams from my couch. It's finally playing videos quickly and without buffering. The only remainly issue to me is the long startup at the start.

It is doing that crap again.

I don't get why the beta menu doesn't pin the beta forum to it. Makes so much sense to make use of the browser, guess that's why they don't do it...

Ever since the last update I keep getting kicked out from Live every 30 mins or so. The update I got today didn't help either.

I must be incredibly lucky, because I've had basically no problems with the beta and I've been in it since the first day. I've had two hard lockups since the first day, and that's it.

The one thing I reeeeally want Microsoft to fix, is allowing you to choose how many patches you want to store.

It's a pretty scary thought that if you take your Xbox to a place where there is no internet, you might not be able to play the game the way you want to because the patch has been overwritten since you've played more than three other games after it.

They've specifically programmed it to delete patches so it's not rocket-science to program an on/off switch to it.

Patches are stored on the HDD since last year if one is connected. They are not saved to the cache anymore.

What, really?! That's awesome. I never heard that. Since when? Did they make a post about it?

Maybe I can fix my issue with YouTube (can't log in under my name anymore after I accidentally logged off) by clearing the patch and save and re-downloading them.

EDIT: Yeah, it worked! I also see there's a save file called 'content cache' on my drive. I wonder if this is why game box art loads so quickly in my game library since I started using this dash. Been asking for this feature for a while too!

Yeah. If you go to your storage device and select the game you will the see the patch in the folder too.

For most games really, don't actually know if all games use this method.

It's most likely a system-level thing, so games/apps don't have to be updated to make use of it.

I don't think you're the only one. I've only seen minor bugs like IE pin getting corrupted.

Do your duty fellow testers. :)

This is only partially true. From what I can gather, smaller patches are still stored in the temporary cache, like they've always been.

However, Microsoft now allows for larger patches, and if those patches exceed the previous tiny limits (2 MB?), they will now store the updates on the hard drive.

I've actually been pretty disappointed with this beta test. The update yesterday wasn't THAT bad but many of them have taken a good 10-15 minutes to start gaming which is all too reminiscent of my PS3.

The differences are pretty negligible to me as I don't use beacons, don't have a Kinect and definitely have not used IE.

So you've been incredibly useful to the testing of this beta is what your saying.

7MB I think, first game I noticed with big patches for me was Bulletstorm, only shocking because it was an auto update about 280mb big, stuff like that used to be download free dlc like with burnout paradise.

Have you been using pins? best feature along with the slight layout redesign imo.

I've seen patches smaller than 7MB on the hard drive though. I believe I've heard in the past that 2MB was the limit.

Before the last few updates, I noticed a lot of stalling when you tried to pin an app to the home screen. Last night I pinned 4-5 apps with no problem. There was an update to the HBO Go app but I can't tell if it changed anything.

Do you not think it was a bit stupid applying for the beta if you didn't want any of the features and didn't want constant updates?

It's a pretty weird criticism of it since the final version won't have any of those 10-15 minute updates, and the single reason you're getting them is that you asked Microsoft for them.

This lay patch is driving me nuts, thought my Xbox was dying.

Had to drop from 1080p to 720p as the dash wasn't picking it up.
Every now and then the screen goes black like the tele is off (think it might be when I get a pop up) happened loads in Borderlands 2.

Such a pain!!!!

Hi guys, given the current performance of my Xbox, I'm going to format my HDD. Any tips to make sure I keep all my profiles and saves?
Move them to a USB stick, format the HDD, then move them back again. Make sure you use Move instead of Copy for the saves, as all saves can be moved, but some saves are locked and cannot be copied.

I dunno but wouldnt it be better to wait till the final dash before formatting?

I've been having netflix hang up when I'm launching it, ever since the update yesterday. Is this a thing, or my connection? I can access netflix on my PC and my phone normally over the same connection.

This may not help, but when I had that happen with an app, clearing the cache, deleting the app and any updates for it, then re-downloading the app fixed it.
