Xbox LIVE Indie Games - The November 2010 Thread

Marketplace has stopped doing that neat thing where it highlighted Indies before scrolling back, though.

Commander - World 01 is a tower defence game. If those two words haven't turned you off, then you need this game. Y'see, it's tower defence like I haven't played before. It looks brilliant, and the choice of music is just utter genius. It's all classical, and when you feel like you're in some massive space war and you're listening to classical music, my God, the atmosphere is just immense. It'd be worth a dollar ($60) for that alone. But the gameplay is great too, and really turns tower defence on its head, in a way.

Normally there are two ways TD works. Enemies come on a set path, or you build towers to direct them places. Here, they start on a path that constantly evolves. The path orbits around different planets, and as the planets move, so does the path. Then, it gets better. You can add gravitational turrets to planets that don't have them, and then the path has to orbit around them too, so you can send it all over the place.

Aside from that, it's tower defence as standard, pretty much. But that's MORE than enough to make this game awesome. It's really funny as well. The loading screens, certainly, but also, when I died I saw this message:

Are you sure you want to retry? I mean, I saw you play and it's kind of hopeless.

Buy it.

Buy some of these, too.

Whakman is a 2D platformer that looks, sounds, and plays really well. You have to roll through levels collecting coins, is all, but you get better awards based on whether or not you die, so there's scope for replayability. I like it.

Wiwi's Adventures 2 has a name you can't make fun of because the world ran out of Wii jokes in 2006. It's a 2D platformer and it's mentally fast, that being the first thing that sticks out. When you've been playing for a few minutes you don't notice it though, and it's really ace. It looks a bit messy, but it sounds really good, and it plays like ye olde platformers. 100 diamonds for an extra life. Get in. Level design is great as well, with hidden areas and multiple routes and stuff. Really enjoyed it.

Angle of Attack is a twin stick with a large turning circle which makes control a bit more awkward than you're used to, not that that's a bad thing. What's bad is that it's so slow and boring and if it picks up tremendously later, good, but I won't be buying it based on the gameplay in the trial. It says there's strategy but there's not, really, it's just a twin-stick with a gimmick. You have to spend points on "construction nodes" to unlock the exit to the level. It doesn't really affect what you're doing.

Avatar's Rock is not about an avatar which is rock, or a rock that belongs to an avatar. It gives you the set from Blur's Song 2 video and you just strum on your game controller to make music and stuff. Quite nicely done in a way, but it feels pointless, I don't feel responsible for the noise I'm hearing. Also, can't forgive poor apostrophe use in one of the game's most important bits.

Krazy Alienz is Space Invaders with Heal Slimes. It doesn't even try to do owt differently.

I'm tempted to get Wiwi's adventures because just from the screenshots I can see that there are a lot of sprite-rips from other games.

For example there's a spiked-ball straight out of Sonic 3 & Knuckles in the first picture.

Actually, one of the enemies was REALLY familiar, but I thought nothing of it...

I saw that last night, great change!

Depends. The first week of December it'll be a great change. When two massage apps and an avatar game release at once, not so much :lol

The only thing I think they could do to put it one more step up is place its box before Demos.

Arcade > On Demand > Indie > Demos

One of the guys at Xona actually sees the list in that order. I've no idea how or why though, he seems to be the only one!

I really need to give some of the radiangames a try... unfortunately I was having trouble downloading from XBL last night. Managed to get a game, whose name I forgot ("Super Happy Fun Game", maybe?). It's got a real cutesy aesthetic and plays like a much less frantic Every Extend Extra. You set off an explosion, and you need to make as big a chain of explosions as possible to clear the round. You also get some arrows you can place on the game field to direct the flow of igniters. It's pretty cute, I like the aesthetic... apart from the nauseating addition of a DOLPHIN cursor on the title screen.

Do you (or anyone else in the thread) know of the policy of putting in copyrighted material in your game? I.E. sprite rips, names or references to other games, sports team logos, and most importantly music (I'd love to take samples of popular house music songs to use as the background music in my game)?

Would it be OK if instead of saying "Sony PlayStation" I could have a system called the "Pony GameStation"? etc.

There is no "policy" for this, only laws (copyright laws and such). And speaking of XBLIGs, that actually means laws of several countries. These laws define what is allowed and what not. If you are unsure about if a certain usage of some material is allowed or not, you should really talk to a copyright lawyer. I certainly would not take such advice from a random forum contact ("But your Honour, that SqueakyGuy15 from the forum said it was OK to rip the sprites and use them in my game!"). Because at the end, MS pulling your game from marketplace for a copyright violation (if you even make it through review) may be the least of your problems. At worst, you will be at the receiving end of a very expensive lawyer action from the rights holder of the material you used. So before you use something, better be very sure that you have permission to use it. If in doubt, ask a lawyer.

Was XBL Community Games originally pitched as a way to make a living?

I think it has the potential. As someone who was wanting to start a game company for years, I was thrilled about the launch of XBLCG. It felt like the wall was down....suddenly the barriers to entry into the industry disappeared. Anyone could make a game, knowing that it will be launched on the xbox360. Sure you could have launched an Indie game on PC, but there are so many unknowns, such as piracy and getting exposure.

So personally, I think XBLIG is a great launch platform, and I have huge respect for Microsoft for giving Indie devs the opportunity. I love to see all the amazing games launched on the platform, and just love the passion and the spirit. Indie dev is straight up punk rock...not giving a crap!

Our first XBL Indie Game will be launching in early 2011, "Doc Logic." Currently our programmer is in his second year of a Masters in Mathematics degree, so development on Doc Logic has halted for a short time, but we are so close!

Eh. I don't know. I'd be pissed if I was a paying professional dev and Indie Games pushed my demo off the screen. I don't see that happening but who knows.

That's good, and I hope you guys do well. It does have potential but I think it's important to realize that it is not and won't be allowed to be an "AppStore" for the 360. To be clear, my comment was solely in response to some posters/devs who were essentially complaining that they SHOULD be able to make a living off the service and that MS should be doing more to make it happen.

To Me, MS' approach, at least in the beginning, was "Here's these tools for cheap. You guys have fun and you might make some pocket money", not "Here's this platform, develop good games and you can quit your day job, we're obligated to place the service at par with our licensed, professional developers in the dashboard."

Now with Windows Phone 7, the second approach may actually be the way they are going. I don't know.

Well, I decided to crawl out from underneath that rock I've been hiding under and show everyone what I've been working on.

Larger versions are available on my website.

The game still has quite a bit of work left to do but pretty soon I'll be needing some people to test out the single player. If you are interested in testing please send me a private message.

I'll be posting a new screen on my website every wednesday and if you all don't mind I'll post it in the monthly official thread as well.

I can't wait to show everyone the rest of the game. I think it has a lot of potential to show off how awesome Indie Games can be.

How about music? What's the best way to get ahold of music for an XBLA Indie? Perhaps I could ask people in the amateur musician forum of Tranceaddict to write my games, or just write my own shitty songs in Ableton? Ideally I'd love to take samples out of real dance songs.

I'd say direct rips and exact logos are not allowed in any commercial game without permission from the owner, Indie or otherwise.

Parody versions sure. Knockoff versions of songs would probably be alright if they're at least slightly different. Not sure if there's Indie Game specific guidelines, though.

But yeah in games in general, as long as it's parody and not blatantly exactly the same... I mean look at Retro City Rampage.

The creator pulled it after he was called out on this. He did claim that they were original drawings.

As for my own opinion, I thought the rule of thumb was that it's never OK to use someone else's work if you're making money from it. Something like a Newgrounds Flash is fine because you're doing it for fun, but there's MS points changing hands here.

I can confirm that it was also in that order for me too, ohhhh if Matthew (Xona) was seeing like me, maybe its the fact that we're in Canada. But sadly after the last update that fix the issue with child account, replaced the avatar by latest games thumbnails the order have changed too :-(.

I wish they could indeed make this the default order, as people could see Indie Games without needing to go offscreen.

Gotta admit though it's pretty damn sad to rip the design of a SPIKED BALL.

Proper drawing is hard, especially if your brain is stuffed with the necessary algorithmic left-brain knowledge needed to program a decent game. It took me years of practice before I found my feet with an acceptable art style for my RPG Bonded Realities, before then I did random character designs, and even my own political cartoons for practice. :lol So even for something like a spike ball it's easy to stuff up if you don't have the artsy "knack".

He was probably so used to ripping art for his free obscure games he thought it was acceptable for it to be put up for sale.

I ended up playing Pac-Man last night, but I did download Commander: World 01 and will give it a run by the end of the weekend. I thought the graphic design looked confusing, but it does sound like a cool twist on Tower Defense.

You'd probably need to change 'Yankees' to 'Wankees' or something to make it legal. As for music DO NOT sample anything without the creator's approval, or they'll sue yo' ass.

Really, you'll either need to make the music yourself, find someone else to do it for you or find some good, licence-free music online.

It looks kinda confusing in screenshots, yeah, but when you're playing everything makes total sense.

Aah Impossible Rescue is from the guy that made the pretty amazing Aah Little Atlantis. I'm not really a fan of this, though. There are three horizontal tracks with cats on, each corresponds to a button, AXY. Pressing the button makes that cat go to the top or bottom of the track and you have to avoid obstacles, etc. Controlling all three tracks at once is really hard, and it could've done with replacing the stock of lives with a life counter, so you got a score at the end based on how many lives you took, rather than just not completing the level. There are loads of fun screen options to play with, though. Also: has the same music as about 100 other Indie Games.

Death. Pointless QTE.

Avatar Banker: Greed is Great is not great. It takes the basic gameplay from Avatar Cash Dash (run around collecting coins) and adds such a pointless, complex set of rules and scoring that you'll never, ever find anyone that wants to play it with you because by the time you've finished explaining it they'll have left. And let's face it, the basic gameplay was never really that exciting anyway, was it?

Blurball is about as good as Pong will ever get, but it's still Pong and, well, Pong's only really good if you've never seen another videogame. Multiball Pong with different shaped arenas and glowy visuals.

Just got:
  • The Tempure of the Dead
  • Commander World 01
  • Radiangames Fireball
Fireballs, well is from Radiangames so was an instabuy. Tempura knew about it because of the thread here, but had no points (looks and plays awesome) and Commander, mainly because of the visuals (and darn the game is so cool).

Finally tried Inertia and really enjoy the floating mechanic. Puzzle platformers are totally my thing, but I really wish the art was on the same level. It could definitely use some polish, but if you can look past that you'll have a great time.

Pony Slaystation. HAS to be really. Obvious spoonerism but great nonetheless.

Do we know exactly what day the Indie Uprising starts (1st Dec?)? I want to big it up via our (food) blog but may be on holiday when it happens so will have to write it all up beforehand.

Fireball’s update will be live in a short while (approved but not uploaded yet). The score server should be back up and running the new version within a few hours. Here’s what changed in the update:

1 additional challenge – Proximity (large groups of snowballs in a small arena)

Change music track (LB/RB) and UI in-game and 1 more music track

Store highest combo for each scoreboard, not combo for that score

Fixed not uploading your highest score if you’re not connected to Xbox Live at the time

Save on timer in menus (every 5 minutes)

Fix challenge scoreboard switching (could go to a blank page, now goes to first)

Put in some fixes to help turn off random voices while sharing scores

Reduced frequency of hitching while playing

Let player choose which wave to restart at after death

Show time/kills remaining on main HUD

Box art updated

Show Version 1.1 on title screen

The 2nd and final update to Apple Jack has gone through which:

- Shortens the time between death and restart.
- Cleans up some of the graphics.
- Adds more anti-aliasing (barely noticable).
- Fixes a crash bug late in the game.
- Steadies the framerate when lots of coins are on screen.
- Does some other stuff I can't remember.

It also allowed me to include some of the game's review scores on the cover, and add some nice quotes to one of the screenshots.

To celebrate the audacious worldwide release of this patch, here are a couple of codes for the full game. First come first served!
