Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

Like I said, allowing access to servers != intentionally uploading data to servers after you say it doesn't leave the console.

If they were doing it as part of prism that certainly wouldn't tell anyone about it. That would be illegal and they would go to jail.

And as I edited in to my post, the Xbox One includes Skype which is already part of the program.

Hmm...I wonder what the Xbox One's screen message will look like, when that 24-hour offline time limit is met. Gonna be an instant meme, like the RROD.
Maybe we can think up a good XBONED OFFLINE screen pic for them...

My thread got locked - To clear up some misconceptions I just wanted to say I'm a Sony/Nintendo-centric gamer. Not really big on Xbox

I'm worried Sony will have something similar to this. If third parties decided to lock out used games on the Xbox One, they would have to do it on PS4, too.

What are the chances that next holiday season Xbox One.Five comes out as a "bare bones" version that doesn't let you you install games but also has none of the DRM?

Pretty good I'd say.

Pretty much guaranteed if the PS4 eclipses the Xbox One in sales. My lack of faith in the general public tells me the XB1 will sell gangbusters though :(

I thought that too, but then why are Amazon and Steam offering games at such a low price in conjunction with publishers? That could be just as closed. I feel like the concept of some ownership of a disc that could e worth something will keep prices high.

I tend to buy PC games at a price that I find acceptable for the time I will actually use the product. Access to games later is just gravy.
Oh, good point. I feel like Amazon Digital though has been trying to become a premier store, I just don't feel like Microsoft be as frequent.

You're very trusting. Especially right after finding out they were hiding this from you.

Hiding it? I always assumed everything stored in servers was inherently unsafe, and able to be accessed by government agencies. Why do you think there was the commotion before about MS potentially storing Skype messages on their servers?

But this is different. Microsoft is saying that the data from the Kinect is not being uploaded to the server, and I don't see why that would be untrue.

If they were doing it as part of prism that certainly wouldn't tell anyone about it. That would be illegal and they would go to jail.

But PRISM is about accessing data that Microsoft already collects, not collecting data specifically for the purpose of PRISM.

Skype's privacy policy tells you that they store some of your data on servers. That's not the case with Kinect data, where they're saying the opposite.

It's already a meme. There was a great gif of the famous Daigo vs Justin SFIII match being interrupted right in the middle of that insane parry barrage.

We should boycott the presser. If anyone goes to E3 stand outside the entrance and give flyers to people about why they shouldn't go to MS's presser!

Ignoring the implications for a second.

Does anyone genuinely not have there PS3/Xbox 360 not connected to the internet? I'm genuinely curious.
Yeah. I'm not a gold subscriber, I only occasionally play SP games on 360, it's never online. The ps3 is on and off, depending on whether I actually do need a connection to do what I want/need to do (download stuff, play MP, etc).

Thanks, always interesting to see that people don't have internet access in places. I take it for granted I guess.

When I was at uni, we were restricted on what we could link to the internet. if we wanted to connect a laptop to it for example, it'd send us to a intranet page where we could enter in details to log in. Consoles and other devices were automatically blocked by this system.

so yeah. We had internet - the best internet in the entire fucking country to be precise. And the Xbone still wouldn't work on it. Absolutely insane.

Yes. I haven't connected my 360 in 2 months. I completed both Tomb Raider and Bioshock: Infinite without ever connecting the 360 to the internet.

Why is it so hard to believe?

Hmm some of the conditions on the xbone sound like its gonna be really hard to use if you actually turn of your appliances ( with a socket switch).

But the fact that you never need a disc and can play your games at any console sounds cool. Wonder how smart that feature is though. games will probably be around 10gb and if you have progressed a bit it could lead to the fact that you need to download 5gb or so before you can continue your game?

Still switching camp though, my psvita sealed that deal..

for you.. Once the retailer has it back im sure they'll have the ability to 'reset' the game for the next chap.

And what if I don't want to trade it in to the retailer Microsoft has chosen? What if I want to sell it on eBay or sell it privately?

oh, I can't. That's going to go down well with the EU.

I actually (right today prior to this revelation) want an Xbox One over a PS4. That's saying a lot considering I've owned every playstation since launch. Turning on my xbox and skyping with friends without using a controller is very appealing.

I'm concerned about renting, loaning, and private sales in addition to trade-ins. If we apply this logic to current gen then this seems even more ridiculous. Imagine purchasing Madden for PS3 at launch and having these rules attached. There would've been hell to pay.

I don't want to overreact because Microsoft hasn't spoken on these issues in-depth. They have a lot of explaining to do. I hope Sony learns from this and doesn't implement the same policies.

E3 is not the type of thing you can really "boycott". It's for game journalist and industry professionals who need to be there to cover the junket as their job. Even if half of the people there agreed with you, they'd still have to cover it. You know, because...jobs.

I will love it, absolutely love it, if EA refuses to allow trade in on previous year's Madden games.

Boy, won't the casual "TV!, SPORTS!" gamer be in for a rude awakening when Madden 2015 comes out and they find they are stuck with Madden 2014. And oh no, there go the server shutdowns....

Money well spent.

Most people will have internet access somewhere in their home, but little Timmy might not have it in his bedroom where he wants to play the damn console. It's baffling really.

My Xbox is often hooked up to one of the monitors at various public venues that run local fighting game tournaments. For much of the rest of the week, it's often in my car or a box because I don't always feel like going to the trouble of hooking it back up to my home setup only to tear it down again next weekend.

My entire circle of friends that meet up for these events are pretty much writing off the Xbone altogether.

I read this in Aziz Ansari's voice and it got funny fast.

Haha.

Henshaw said this will allow developers to create larger, persistent worlds for Xbox One users.

“We’re provisioning for developers for every physical Xbox One we build, we’re provisioning the CPU and storage equivalent of three Xbox Ones on the cloud,” he said. “We’re doing that flat out so that any game developer can assume that there’s roughly three times the resources immediately available to their game, so they can build bigger, persistent levels that are more inclusive for players.

Hmmm, now I wonder if they haven't just provisioned all of this cloud computing to ensure they have a decent authentication system for all these 24hr check ins. Probably just a tangential or peripheral 'bonus' to the cloud.

I've only ever connected my Xbox 360 and PS3 to the internet when I needed to download an update or make a purchase. I don't play multiplayer games.

You mean the implication that you haven't been paying attention for the past few months? This question has been asked and answered many times over ever since the rumors started about the XBO DRM/Online requirements.

It really is. This is going to be a huge pain in the butt presumably for a whole heap of different consumer groups.

The sad thing is M$ knew the level of hate they would incite from this nonsense.

Why else would they cancel their post conference Q&A session other than to scurry off the stage before the inevitable onslaught by the gaming press?

Didn't think about it but damn the yearly sport trade in crowd is fucked.

The comment outrage on Major Nelson's blog is hilarious. That guy has to be hating his life right now.

Major Nelson tomorrow morning.

I'd think the backlash on May 21st woulda made them rethink. I just can't figure out how they thought gamers would take these restrictions. They can try and reword it all they want as it just makes them out of touch.

exactly there is lots of data being collected on the web about all of us but the Kinect is not one of those places... that just needs to be put to bed...

A couple of year ago when I was renting in Sydney I did not have my 360 connected. When I took it home every now and then I would update and download a couple of things. If that had been the One I wouldn't have been able to use anything.

For me good games aren't enough to sway me on this. I'm afraid many will fold and buy in once enough games come out though sadly. I hope these problems gain a lot of steam in the mainstream, although I doubt many will see the implications right away or even care.

I had 0 intentions on buying an xbone, but I'm slightly concerned sony will follow suit (or at least 3rd party pubs will make their games use these restrictions).

This is gonna be the 1st e3 where instead of being excited about the games, I'm nervous about how I'll be negatively impacted. Makes me even happier I bought a Wii U last week.

Me. I don't currently have mine connected. Recently moved and I mostly play local UMVC3 anyway. Find really no need. Just turn it on, grab the arcade sticks and go. No outside world, no distractions, no nothing. Just me and my little bro enjoying our Mahvel by ourselves for hours on end. I love it. The feel to be connected doesn't even cross my mind.

Their entire business model is built around cutting deeper into the market for selling new games, and getting a cut into the used game market. They're not going to change strategy at this point.
