Xbox One- what would it take to get YOU to buy one ?

A low price I guess. Just not seeing anything that is really compelling me to rush out to buy one at this point. I'll probably pick one up for Halo 5 though.

What would it take for me to buy an XBox One? I think, now I'm a PS4 owner and soon to be Wii-U owner, the following conditions would need to be met:

  1. XBox One replacement launched, or XBox One discontinued and MS leaving the market
  2. The console is hacked for unofficial 3rd party applications to run
  3. A complete set of emulators ported from PC with XPort quality UI's

I'd buy one then.

The Xbox One's biggest problem is its confused/inconsistent messaging and lack of identity. It's become a weaker PS4 with no Japanese games.

I think the Xbox One would've been more successful if they just shipped a digital-only box with a 1TB HDD, no disc drive, and called it a day. Yeah, there'd be a large group of gamers with no interest, but these people don't have an interest in the box right now as it stands (for the most part). They could've offered something meaningfully different, with Steam-like sales and a consistent image.

Excellent post.

I would add to this, that for the previous two generations MS brought a lot of new stuff to the table though hardware and software. With Xbox they brought standardised HDD and ethernet port, standardised 'pc-like' hardware which made development much easier, etc. With the 360 they brought a 'next-gen' console operating system that made interacting with your gaming friends, playing with them, etc. much easier, an online store with space for indie games, etc. And Sony slowly but surely had to play catchup, and everyone benefitted from it. The PS4 is a console that took all of the lessons that MS taught Sony, and iterated on them. The reason for the PS4 being as good as it is, is the fierce competition for sales last generation. So in that sense, everyone who says competition isn't important is idiotic.

This generation...what new have they brought to the table? The MS of 2005 would be ahead of PSNow and Morpheus, this generation they're way, way behind.

Basically that's why, even though I think that saying 'MS should get out of the industry' is extreme, I at least understand the sentiment. They've brought absolutely nothing of note to the table this generation. A lot of people are scratching their heads and asking what the point of MS is if they're just going to be Sony Lite. Even stuff like the changes to the XBLG paywall are just playing catchup when really what they needed to do was launch something new and exciting that Sony would have to play catchup to.

Take out the rest of the restrictive drm. Being able to earn achievements offline, being able to watch Netflix without depending bon Live being up, being able to play F2P games without live, those are all basic functions missing from that thing.

Which brings us to the price. Because it is a weaker box and can't do much without online even WITH the 180s, it needs to be cheaper. No, removing the Kinect isn't enough; it simply isn't equal the competition to warrant the same price.

Yeah but that's not how market perception works unfortunately. The initial general market perception that formed up to and then shortly after launch for Sony/MS was essentially:

Sony

MS

I'm kinda just not interested in buying one. At E3 I tried to hype myself up on the release news. I guess if there were must have exclusives I would have to buy one but the Xbox One doesn't interests me in a meaningful way. Its too much like the 360 and I already had my fill of the 360 a few years ago.

Games.

I wouldn't mind an Xbox One or a PS4 but I am happy with my 360/PS3/PC right now and there's no compelling reason to get a next gen (for me it's still next) console. Probably this fall but maybe I'll wait for Black Friday deals or if the price lowers.

Now that I think about it, after Sunset Overdrive and Forza Horizon I might dump the system. 2015 will be full with PS4/PC/Wii U stuff.

Games I give a damn about
Lower price
Better controller (internal rechargeable battery would be a good start)

I never got why anyone would want that... I don't know if it's the built in batteries are worse, but my xbox one controller lasts waaaaaaay longer with my rechargeable eneloops than the ds4 with built in battery or my x360 controller with the battery pack (since I was stupid and bought play and charge kits back then). And when the batteries are done, i just switch them to the still fully charged eneloops, so I basically never need to plug my controller in and play with a cable. I have to do that with my ps4 all the time (not even to speak of my wiiu, that stock battery pack is a travesty).

So is it really more comfortable for you guys to play with a cable than to just *click *clack switch out the batteries?

OT (well slightly ;) I think ms are on a good path to slowly repair their image and I really believe mcc and it's marketing campaing will bring a lot of people back. Not enough to surpass ps4 of course but enough to get them into a comfortabel 2nd place. Xbox was always the halobox, and nearly everyone I know bought it for that reason...

The likelihood of me ever buying an Xbox One is very slim.

MS stopped supporting the 360 after a few years, while Sony kept releasing quality PS3 games right untill the PS4 was launched. The 360 had a lot of exclusives in its first years (including Japanese RPGs), it had the better graphics in those years and certainly the best online experience. The Xbox One doesn't have those advantages. It has a handful of exclusives but a number of them are already being ported to the PC. I just don't see why I should buy an Xbone when I already have a PC. PS4 and Wii U. It's a completely superfluous system for most multi console owners I think.

Did u not see all the last of us threads lol the most anticipated game for ps4 around here was a remaster that most already played. They have exclusives u must be high.

I hate microsoft because they touched me in my secret place. Nothing they ever do will make me forget what they have done to me. No game they ever release will make me give them a chance at forgiveness. Now every relationship I have with games is tainted because of them.

Jesus Christ.

Let me play my 360 games.
Option to use 360 controller.
Cheaper price for Kinect bundle.
Get rid of app pay walls on top of LIVE Gold.
Full 1080p.

A man can dream.

What do you mean by this?

They no longer require Gold for apps, only for multiplayer.

I always said what I value it at: $300.
If the white 1 TB bundle with Sunset comes out at $400, then I may buy one since it adds much more value than the plain black edition.
Really the Xbox One I am buying only for the exclusives and no exclusives will be out until the fall.

Edit: The PS4 I valued at $400, One at $300. I valued the Wii U at $250 on launch, but I got trapped into the hype by Nintendo Land.

I decided to stick with Ps4 and WiiU this gen so far. Ps4 for brand identification and multiplatform titles and WiU for Zelda and Mario games.

Yeah, PS4 for me for the multiplats and exclusives like Disgaea and Wii U for the Nintendo exclusive games like Smash and Mario Kart. Xbox One has KI and Dead Rising 3 (which is going to PC), so not a whole lot of reason to purchase now. Sunset and MCC is pushing more toward buying it though.

I know its asking too much but:

- 299 euro
- new slim version, included internal AC adapter
- kinect included
- white/red xbox one version
- included 2 games (Quantum break + sunset overdrive)

Since I have a PC, I don't really need an X1 outside of a few exclusives I can live without. So the answer is nothing.

Outside of the regular third party stuff I can get on PC, I have a Wii U for the great first party and awesome local play.

Then I have a 3ds for portable gaming goodness.
This is the same answer for PS4

Exclusive IPs that makes me lust for it badly. And then MAYBE.

I find it hard to justify buying 3 consoles again this generation, seeing that I haven't got that much time or money to begin with. Consoles are meant to be played, not to collect dust.

I don't think there is anything that can convince me to buy one, ever.

Even if you gave me one for free at this point, I'd still be playing PC and trying to sell it on eBay.

huh?

Microsoft's first party games are don't interest me. I've played Halo and Gears to death, they need new franchises. The multiplatform games look/perform better on the PS4. I don't see a reason to buy one at the moment. I think 'Below' is their most interesting game so far.

I guess if there were must have exclusives I would have to buy one but the Xbox One doesn't interests me in a meaningful way. Its too much like the 360 and I already had my fill of the 360 a few years ago.
Yeah, the exclusives that I was interested in died out during the end of the Xbox 360 period and I was happy with just a PS3 at the time. Really what it would take is for them to invest in some exclusives that are not brown and gray.

1. Considerably cheaper than PS4
2. Ability to CHOOSE to not accept any update they try to force on users, and the console still work ...so that I have protection from their original plans, and can avoid 'additional' features I do not want.
3. A new UI not based on Metro
4. Different exclusives - I got burned out on their titles over the 360 generation

At this point the Master Chief Collection and Forza Horizon 2 will probably be enough. There are already a number of 3rd party games I haven't played yet that I wouldn't mind playing on the X1. So there's a high chance I'll pick one up close to the end of the year, but I'm also equally in the market for a PS4 - and the prospect that 3rd-party games will look better on the PS4 is a nice bit of icing on the cake.

I'm sure I'll own both consoles eventually, at the moment it's just a matter of which one to grab first. Outside of TLOU: RE, there aren't any other exclusives on Sony's side that I'm dying to get my hands on, so in that department, MS has more to offer me (but not by much).

Lots of good exclusive games. Not console exclusive or timed exclusive, but actually exclusive. As in I can't play the game for many, many years if I don't own an Xbox One, period. So far, there's exactly 1 game, Sunset Overdrive, that meets those qualifications for me. And I guess maybe Killer Instinct when they actually finish the game instead of releasing 20% of a game every 6-8 months.

I'm currently debating whether I want a PS4 or an Xbox One. So what would it take to get me to get an Xbox One?

Either the multiplatform games have to match technical quality across the platforms, or the Xbox has to be cheap enough to offset the quality loss. I'm kind of grumpy over the Xbox One crap they pulled last year, and I'm not a general fan of Microsoft (or Sony), but if the value proposition was on-point I'd get over it. But it isn't.

Also I'd have to see more Microsoft first party stuff. They've got a good lineup, but I still give the edge to Sony, whose games appear more plentiful and closer to release.

I believe youre not forced to update your Xone if youre not intending to play online. The PS4 also "forces" an update for the same reason. I dont undestand why you shouldnt though.

Also, they will not throw away the Metro UI, it works on the console and theyre improving it every month.

Anyway, I already understood you just want to create reasons to not buy one.

  • Exclusive titles
  • Sales on XBL like Steam does
  • DLC prices dropping over time
  • Maybe some exclusives
  • More original IP's
  • Fixing the "everyone is in a party" problem. Let me find players with mics.
  • Less focus on twitter/facebook/bing/espn/etc. Present me a gaming console, not a multimedia device.
  • Did I mention exclusives? You know, the kind that stays exclusive?
  • Stop letting developers put 6GB day-one patches on your system...

Would you buy a mobile phone that took AAA batteries?

I bought an Xbox One for one thing, sadly, and that is killer instinct. I love it and play it often, but the rest of the Xbone library is lackluster. I dont see any major exclusives on the horizon that wow me. Kinect is still a joke (i sold mine).

If the development of seasons 2 and 3 of KI goes south for some reason, i will sell my xbox one. Funny enough, i dont have any reasons to buy a ps4 either. Still enjoying pc, wii u, 360 & ps3!

Would you buy a mobile phone that took AAA batteries?

terrible comparison.

I don't mind the built in rechargeable battery in a controller, but the one thing I like about having removable batteries/battery packs in the xbox controllers is that when the battery goes to shit, you only have to buy a new battery, not an entirely new controller

Yeah, really excited about that game. Master Chief Collection also looks awesome.
Wish Quantum would come out already.

I hope we get something like Blue Dragon for the One.

Well you got 3 great games right there, 2 of which are coming within the next 3 month, sooooooo

giphy.gif

But seriously. If you are looking forward to those 3 games, you are probably also looking forward to halo5 and halo6 will probably also come out on this gen. Throw in some killer instinct, forza horizon 2 and some other unanounced exclusives coming down the line and you can pretty much justify it ;)

Well - the OP asked for opinions, I gave mine. A new UI (which they did last gen) would be a plus in my book.

As to "updates" - I play online - so there is that. But aside from the potential return to DRM - last gen I was given the opportunity to be served advertisements to my dashboard after purchasing a console with no ads. As an example of the type of 'new update features' that really piss me off.

I bought an Xbox One for Dead Rising 3, pretty much. It's an excellent game, but had I known there would be a PC port I would have waited for other appealing exclusives. Every major console is bound to have at least a small handful of exclusives that I'll want to play, after all.

And now those exclusives have been announced. A Phantom Dust sequel/reboot, an entirely new Kamiya-developed action game, and a new Raiden game. Halo 5 should be pretty cool, too, and if Master Chief collection stays on console I'll still be set for that. And maybe Sunset Overdrive will be neat.

We have no idea what this is game is going to be like.

We have an idea of the level of quality to expect.
