Xbox One Will STILL Function if Kinect Isn't Plugged In.

you guys think the tinfoil hats will still say that kinect still tracks you even if its not plugged in by communicating with some super secret government frequency for spying

If true, then Microsoft has pulled a 180 on just about every policy they've made since their May 21st reveal. Hilarious yes, but I still have to applaud them for a lot of these turn arounds.

My point being is if the games invest heavily into the features you have no CHOICE to use it.

Since the kinect is not required to be plugged in, no dev in their right mind is going to force you to use it for games targeted at the core audience. No worries dance party 27 hula hoop edition will still come out.

Kinect is a development black hole with no perceivable benefits for the consumer, it's become a fancy TV remote that's slower and clumsier than button presses.

Whats more, these motion control features are being built as standard into new, high end TV's, but again, it's another gimmick that will soon fade.

it's so weird that Xbox sales have gone up since it was introduced, since it has no benefits for the consumer. those guys at Microsoft must be marketing geniuses, wow.

A 399 SKU with Kinect would be a far bigger deal than 399 without.

If Microsoft can take the $100 hit and keep Kinect in there, then I believe that's a serious game changing decision.

A 399 Kinectless SKU is just a weaker, bigger PS4 at the same price.

Yep. I imagine they'd rather eat the cost than cut it out, even a six month to year after the fact.

You still have to pay for Kinect even if you don't want to use it. I really wish they would just sell a Kinect-less SKU. I know they're building their entire console vision around Kinect, but there is a huge market of people that don't want it and don't want to pay for it. You will lose this market to PS4, instead of releasing a SKU for $300-350 and giving people an option.

I don't think there is any ulterior motive here, but I also like how you act like that's crazy when the past couple months have been nothing but leak after factual leak on just how deep these agencies spy on the population. Ignorance is bliss I guess.

"That said, like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn’t plugged in, although you won’t be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor." - WHITTEN on IGN's new Xbox One ask me anything.

MEGATON? Is this confirmation that Xbox One doesn't require Kinect to be plugged in?

FULL QUESTION AND FULL ANSWER.

This is great if true, don't have to have it plugged in, but you won't be able to use voice commands or any other Kinect features, as expected. I'm excited GAF, how close are we to getting a Kinectless Xbox One SKU? It used to be improbable because Kinect was part of the Xbox One experience from the get go, but now if you don't need to have it connected at all times, may they decided to not make you buy it if you don't want it?

Another Kinect related question: HOW "OFF" CAN KINECT BE WHEN THE SYSTEM IS IN USE?

Update: thanks Albert!
Haha wow

I kind of wish they went through with their original pitch and restrictions just to see how it played out. Also I hope they keep the Kinect in the box. A 100% adoption rate will make devs want to utilize Kinect in cool new ways knowing every Xbox One owner is a potential user.

man all that's left is the price. lower it by 50 and sony will be sweating bullets.
Why would they? Sony is plenty comfortable with all the positive buzz and pre-orders they've been getting.

If anything, this reversal is directly the result of Microsoft sweating bullets from the next-gen landscape.

Incoming $400 kinect free SKU.

If they're taking a beating in sales they'll have to either:

1) Kinect-less SKU for $400 or less

2) Drop the price and eat the cost with Kinect still included

The market will speak with their wallets this fall and in 2014. I'm curious to see how sales of both consoles pan out.

All the turn a rounds get me to tnink all of it was a cover to bend the discussion away from something they can't turn around...
The obvious lesser type of RAM used and the overall slower GPU.

Prety smart move if the weaker console thing doesnt come to ligt in the media.

If ms released this as their console and vision compared to that original mess things would be a lot more interesting. I still feel MS is going to be fighting back from the horrible first impression for a while.

This is amazing news! Now I feel like I can properly buy an XO in the future. I'm still stuck on not rewarding the fact that they have done these many 180's..well 720 in the first place but I like that now, they are listening. I wish they didn't go through the trouble of having to dig themselves this deep out but I like the effort...

Have you seen Quantum Break?

Most news seems to indicate that the One is selling quite well and in line with projections and comparable to PS4 sales figures.

MS is simply taking care of negative feedback before it actually does some real damage. The only thing that's actually hurting them right now is the $100 differential and I'd be surprised if they hadn't taken that into account when packaging Kinect.

Sure the reversal is directly a result of MS sweating bullets....but "IF" the Xbox One comes down to $450 in price that $50 difference will suddenly be a "winfall" for consumers as for just $50 more they will get so much more. Not saying that is reality since the PS4 has great specs, but that will be the perceived reality. Kinect 2.0 is an impressive piece of kit.

Because they probably came up with that in the last two weeks or so.

lol

Well, the Xbone is definitely a better product (in my opinion) after all those 180s but MS also appears extremely insecure these days. You can tell they don't really believe in their own "vision."

After all these twists and turns, I'll definitely wait a couple of years before getting an Xbone. Who knows what kind of console it'll be in the near future (probably not even MS).

I dont see it that way at all I see it like this:

A chef at a restaurant cooks his chips in goose fat he loves them and all the other chefs love them to but when they introduce these goose fat chips to the customers they dont like them.
If the chef changes back to cooking his chips in vegetable oil does that make him not like goose fat chips?, No he still likes goose fat chips but has to change them because the customers dont like them and without customers there is no business.

You could say the same thing about sony taking out BC and all the USB ports and card readers on the original PS3 and the boomerang controller.

They can still force you to use it because even though you may unplug it they know you have one.

I'm curious to see what types of apps will still work without Kinect. Sure, the system will still work, but there may be very few things you can actually do without the Kinect plugged in. MS is pushing the Kinect hard, and I expect them to demand that everything on the console have some form of Kinect support.

I think that it's big of Microsoft to make so many changes due to public pressure before release. What upset me, and many others for that matter, about Microsoft's initial reveal was that they seemed to be nixing options right out of the gate. The option to play offline without a Kinect really changes things for me even though I don't have a major problem with the sensor. Options are everything.

man this is such an amazing sight to see...So many 180s. Great for consumers

Sucks to hear about no kinect-less XBone tho :S If they can take it out and bring the price down then it would be in a much better position when competing against PS4

It's hard to imagine you being serious about this when you have a big PlayStation logo as your avatar...

It doesn't have to be plugged in, but there's going to be so much UI integration, your experience will be completely neutered. So much ridiculousness. If it gets people to buy it, bully for MS. But I predict the vast majority will leave it plugged in once they get used to using voice.

"Well, you don't HAVE to use the right thumbstick....but you'll be looking the wrong way a lot."

Nope. It would make Kinect pointless. And thus would be a worse position when competing against the PS4. They would only have games as a differenation factor. The hardware would be weaker and the support for Kinect would be very low...

Microsoft's new policy:

They are marketing geniuses, they also lucked out like Nintendo with the Wii. Much like 3D with glasses, there's a finite amount of time you can capture the public's imagination, before they discover for themselves it's rather s****.

It's an answer to a question nobody asked.

I seriously doubt even 5% of users will unplug the device.

PS4 would still provide more over X1, being the considerable more powerful machine resulting in not-small indiscernible performance differences in games. Kinect features haven't proven to out-benefit that.

If they really want to impress ppl they need to show how third party games can use voice commands to macro tedious menu navigation or something. So far nothing to show that.
