[IGN] This Xbox Generation Will Be Remembered for One Thing: Greed

You're not even joking.

People like adamsapple adamsapple have praised every stupid decision Microsoft have made while continuing to evangelise Xbox by advertising and constantly promoting mediocre games like Startfield and Avowed, rather than pushing Microsoft to do better.

Sycophants like that have only encouraged Microsoft by rewarding them, and as a result Xbox is now practically dead.

Worse than greed is the cheer amount of shills that defends every decision, even at the cost of their own money.
Xbox could ask their wives to sleep with or even call them to be human shield and they would gadly do it. I honestly cannot understand how this human beings have no shame of letting a corporation pass honey on their butts.
Those hardcore shills love Phil Spencer so much that not only would they be happy for him to blast their Mrs, they'd tuck them in, so strong is the cult of personality.

Yeah, the greedy one is the only one offering the most pro consumer service out of the 3. So greedy.

lol. Nah. We all have biases, and promoting anything we like on GAF barely has any real world impact. adamsapple adamsapple is a homie at this point. For me personally, DF video summaries and Xbox news would never be the same without his contributions. GAF would be like a news channel without a hot weather lady

Aand not just with consoles. Windows 11 is the biggest pos OS I've used since original Windows ME. I have a daily log of issues on my work or personal computer where something broke for no reason and fixes itself for no reason. Today, I made a folder on my desktop and I couldn't see it. I had to open file explorer and load my desktop to view it. Yesterday, snip wouldn't work. It wouldn't let me actually use the snip feature to copy the image over. Every single day.

Yeah, snip is broken for me on W11 work laptop.
How do they mess up something so simple?

You guys act like this website is Sony property.

I want Microsoft to increase gamepass price to $50. If they want to go crazy, I want them to go all the way. I want to watch them burn everything down.

The minute they went "everything is an Xbox", that was it....the brand meant nothing, and they did what Konami did to the soccer genre: threw in the towel

Tried to go to $80 games.
Raising $500, 2020 hardware all the way up to $650 in 2025.
Raising Gamepass Ultimate price every year 2023-2025, going from $15, to $17, to $20 and all the way up to $30.
Prolific use of "pay us more to play a few days early."
A clear desire to kill physical.
Repeatedly diminishing microsoft rewards program over time.
Removing day one games from lower gamepass tiers.

They are doing great.

I just know Sony is watching Nintendo game prices and Xbox doing whatever they are doing and will be getting the wrong idea from all of this.
I'm already expecting the next games to be released for 90 bucks in Europe and PS Plus Premium to increase as well. Now they will be like "nah 152€ is too cheap"

I see that some people will just never see.

Defending the people who actually started the whole putting online multiplayer behind a paywall. And whose gaming utopia is one where you do not actually ever own anything. And just "rent" games. And you think the price of gamepass would never go up to support such a blatantly unsustainable business model? It's just a matter of ti....

Oh wait.

It's almost sad at this point. Ah well, one day you'll learn.

Just because of greed? They'll be remembered for spending tens of billions to end up as a third party, for destroying hardware and software sales, and for many other negative things, and their executives like Phil are still in their positions xDD.

I don't even have to click the article to see that it's Ryan.

Claiming that companies are greedy, as if it's not their job to extract the maximum dollars out of customers, is the telltale sign of someone who just doesn't think that much.

I think Xbox is silly and poorly run but "greedy" is such a blunt, almost Reddit-tier, way of thinking about it.

Almost like it's completely insincere.

I can't help but think this is part of their exit strategy for the service. It seems as if everything Microsoft is doing with Xbox is essentially daring folks to buy it.

I've been suspicious that all of these price hikes and multiplatform releases speak to a general exit strategy from the gaming business, at least the gaming business as we traditionally recognize it.

It seems like they want to go to an all-cloud future pretty much in terms of the Xbox name.

While under any other circumstances it could have been an interesting pivot, they've so thoroughly devalued and destroyed the Xbox name that I don't see them ever recovering.

"Xbox" is likely going to be synonymous with failure at this point to most gamers.

Let's not forget that soon home "consoles" will go the way of the Xbox Rog Ally pricing, PS5 Pro marked the starter flag, and prices will go up

Greed is not the right word and represents amateur journalism.

That said, another in a series of moves alienating your customer base and deterring future customers. They are breaking the brand beyond repair.

How?

I find this is something else people do often... That "oh, everyone does this." thing.

Yes, every company wants to make money, but make no mistake... no one else (except Nvidia) goes about it the way MS does. No one else.

The things MS has done to get to where they are now (and I am only talking about gaming here, I am not that mean)... no other gaming platform has done it. The damage MS has done to the gaming industry as a whole, no other company, in the history of gaming, with all their respective fuck ups... ever did as much. And that didn't just start with them doubling the price fo a sub service that should never has existed to begin with if you ask me. That of itself was just as damaging.

As for Nintendo, I honestly can't even blame them. If their fanbase keeps letting them get away with it, then they will continue doing Nintendo shit.

Are you one of those people who go back to an ex, forgetting why they became an ex in the first place?
Playstation and Nintendo are as aggressive when it comes to bleeding their consumers. Playstation prices have gone up, game prices have gone up (In fact it was Sony who dared touching the 60€ price point. That changed the industry as well), the Playstation subscription stuff has gone up in pricing. And everything without a proportional increase in value. And Playstation being the "market leader", surely would have influence on the gaming industry, or not? And Nintendo have started doing the same thing since the Switch 2 launch. So I don't understand why Microsoft is singled out here. And what do you mean going back to my ex? Why would I do that?

What is exclusive to Xbox though is that people are angry that they will probably start buying Xbox games again, and that's where the majority of the backlash is coming from.
I don't understand this point. Why is buying Xbox games a problem? Because consumers are accustomed to GamePass? Maybe. I don't know enough about psychology to make a good assessment there. I always thought that the value proposition of GamePass was that it's renting games, essentially. You don't get shit permanently.

Not sure I 100% agree. I'm not a big fan of Game Pass, but it's an optional service. You can still buy the games outright if you want, at the same price points that you can on other systems.
Problem is, you got a lot of people used to playing games cheap......thus the backlash. Plus MS just invested 90B+ into Xbox over the last several years........they were bound to want to recoup that in some way.

Now if you said that this generation, Nintendo will be remembered for their greed, I'd be more inclined to agree.

Writing was on the wall from Nadella with earnings. They want explosive growth everywhere to pay for their massive AI investments. Xbox is no exception.

Xbox spends billions buying publishers. Then big cuts occur. Then top it off with massive increases in GP costs. They likely did this expecting a 10% unsub rate, but they will still be ahead. They will likely only adjust pricing if their planned unsub rate gets exceeded.

Honestly, I blame the FTC for allowing the ABK deal to go through. Its a net loss for gamers, employees and the IP that will be shelved.

Yeah, this is like watching the implosion of Sega in real time all over again, except unlike Sega, Microsoft has nothing that makes me sad about their impending collapse
The Sega implosion at least was relatively quick, this MS shit has felt like a 10 year long car wreck.

Everything that everyone said about MS getting into gaming 25 years ago came true, and everyone was warned then about anticompetitive practices and just general MS ways of doing things. None of this is a surprise to people who lived through MS being MS in the 90s.

Ok... so who else should we blame for Xbox's current demise?
The only one to blame is the guy who said they couldn't compete by making good games.

They're gonna sell Xbox to Saudi Arabia for $100 billion, aren't they?
Just my 2 cents but I believe MS fully wants out of this…they're just trying to figure out how to do it.

They're fully 100% in on AI and want to dominate that space, well the money and resources have to come from somewhere. What's expendable?

Also, I think they're just tired of gaming, they realize the juice isn't worth the squeeze any more, and are trying to concoct an exit ramp.

It's pretty rich to call it "greed".
They were offering access to games at unsustainable prices. The media cheered it on, alongside the 80+ billion dollar spending spree that was supposed to undercut and subsume the core games market alongside Gamepass. Xbox fanboys bragged about how much money they were saving.

Yeah, MS is greedy, but this is less an effect of that, and more the rubber meeting the road of financial reality.
what i don't understand is that the game media seemingly wanted Microsoft to take over the industry.

Ye mang, the dudes who greenlit Marathon, Fairgame$ and Concord are some galaxy brain mofos.
it's almost like he was right about some things and wrong about other things
