Also, Reach is kind of Rogue One of Halo franchise, so theoretically you can play it first, but I think overall it works better if you play them in the order they were released.

What is the 'correct' order for playing Halo? I've never played them, since I've always hated FPS gaming on a console, but I think it's about due time to get started before Infinite arrives.

I'd actually play them in plot order rather than release order if you're new to the series. That would be;

Reach > CE > 2 > ODST > 3 > 4

Only play Halo 5 Guardians for the multiplayer. The story is atrocious at best.

Almost.
Halo 5 Guardians' story was really bad, but the gameplay was good, and so were the graphics. If you care about multiplayer, Guardians is still worth playing.

Halo Wars is... Good, but, not for everyone. I didn't particularly care for the story of the first one (but it was fun) and I honestly didn't even play the second one, although I heard it is good as well.

Release order is really the best way. You see the evolution in gameplay, story, music, etc.

Play the trilogy. If you want more then play ODST and Reach. After that if you’re really curious try 4/5 but be warned they are divisive like Disney’s Star Wars sequels. And not just divisive on how the game plays but on the story as well.

The trilogy is what most people played, it’s the core story. If you wanted to see what people loved about Halo/what drove the Halo phenomenon during the decade prior then that’s what you need to play.

Oh, that's what it was! I loved playing the original with my daughter, but I loaded up the new one for a few minutes and something seemed off. But I was way too lazy to compare both.
