Xbox STILL hard to find

Someone at work wanted to buy one as a birthday gift. You think I could find one around town for them to buy? We've got every major chain, two EBs, a Gamestop, Best Buy, Target, two Wal-Marts... you name it. Yet there isn't a single Xbox in town.

This is ridiculous. When these things are less expensive, they're supposed to sell MORE of them, not less because there aren't any on shelves. It's the most inane business plan I've ever seen. Seems pretty obvious that they're killing the thing off now quietly but they've been successful with it so it just makes them look stupid!

Sorry if this is a little ranty. I just can't fathom not having product on shelves when you had one of the best selling games of the previous year. PS2s are at least a little easier to come by and Nintendo has done a good job of restocking regularly.

It's not hard to remain in stock regularly when you're not in high demand, like GC :P

But that aside, I've noticed PSTwo's are in stock a lot around me. Actually, so is Xbox. I don't know why everyone has problem finding them, but I guess it's the benefit of living just outside a city.

Just talking to my Xbox rep, his understanding was that there was some sort of hold up due to the power cord situation. No idea how legit the info is though.

Uh oh time for Gamespot to print a rebuttal.

According to your profile, you're from Reading, PA?

Putting in Reading's zip code into Best Buy's store availability returns:

Wyomiss/reading PA 1701 Crossing Road, Wyomissing, PA 19610 Map & Directions
Whitehall PA 1504 Macarthur Road, Whitehall, PA 18052 Map & Directions
King Of Prussia PA 310 Goddard Blvd., King Of Prussia, PA 19406-2900 Map & Directions
Montgomeryville PA 801 Bethlehem Pike, North Wales, PA 19454-1424 Map & Directions

Plymouth Meeting PA 2010 Chemical Road, Plymouth Meeting, PA 19462-1707 Map & Directions
Concord Pike DE 4807 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803 Map & Directions

...with the bolded ones having Xboxen in-stock. You might want to call them up if you're still looking for one. :P

Yeah there was a complete drought for almost a month that ended the other week here in the Greater Philadelphia area. Same stores as described above in a immensely higher traffic area compared to Reading, but you were SOL unless you could fly to Taiwan and assemble one yourself. However now my work (Circuit City) along with EB (where I bought my replacement Xbox and traded in the DDE Machine for $30) and the rest of the gang have a veritable cornucopia of XBOXEN.

My local EB & Gamestop had 6-10 units each, Best Buy none, Target 3, you get the picture :D

They can be hard to find, just like the PS2's.

How many PS2's are you guys seeing.

I'm seeing them at the Game stores, but not so much at the Big Box stores. But they do seem to be more available than the Xbox.

I've recently been on a cross country US trip from the midwest to the east coast and to Florida. Stopped in several Wal-Marts, Sams, and Best Buys along the way, and I don't remember seeing any Xboxes in stock -- only sheets of paper in the Xbox display at the Wal-Marts saying that the system was out of stock due to the supply issues of the manufacturer.

It's because Microsoft doesn't actually do the manufacturing - it's done by outside vendors that they contract out too. Inability to quickly shift production amounts is a side effect that MS had to live with by choosing this method.

Either that or they're taking a page out of the Sony handbook that dictates "shortages create an attitude of high-demand that raises a consoles profile" or something.

And for the record, it took me all day to locate a used xbox up here in Boston one day a couple weeks ago, so I agree that shortages are still a problem.

Right, and I went to the Reading store today only to find out that their availability thing is WRONG! There were none on the shelves and I asked a guy why it said they had some on the website but didn't when I got here. "I dunno, man. Sorry."

The person wanting to buy didn't want to road trip over 45 minutes at least to get one. All those stores other than Wyomissing/Reading are a long drive from me.

Over the last month I've seen those glass display cases at Target and Wal-Mart filling up with PSTwo systems. They just built a brand new Super Wal-Mart near me and the grand opening was last week. They had an 8 foot high display case with at least 100 PSTwo systems in it. The Xbox systems are still very hard to find around my area. I haven't see any sitting in a glass display anywhere since back before Thanksgiving.

I wonder if Microsoft is holding back intentionally. Especially if they are still losing money on each one. They might be wanting to minimize their losses and ride it out until Fall when Xenon hits.

The only thing that's obvious is that Dave Long wishes Xbox would go away.

The reverse is true sometimes, as well. Sometimes it'll say things aren't available, when they actually are. That happened to me with my Iriver.

WTF?! I'm trying to find one to BUY! I have two systems myself and like 12 games. Who are you and why do you think you know me?
