Xbox360: First game only with Harddisc playable

it's all exponential:
Large textures and mapping effects couldn't be put in the 64MB of the xbox, so the devs used the swap partitions of the xbox HDD to retrieve them on the fly without any loading. in a few years the textures and other data will be bigger and the 512MB of the X360 will not be enough.

Na, it needs to cache the player/team data as you play, because its not actually stored on the disc, its generated when you start a game, then everything changes due to training/transfers/results etc. (Unless the 360 version is different).



Im not sure if it could work very well (in its current form) on memory stick...there is a PSP version coming but its severly gimped so its probably not a good measure.

Let's compare PS3 HDDs to X360 HDDs ;)

They're about 10 times cheaper than 360 memory cards. The 512MB stick is in absolute terms cheaper too (about $35 I think), and could store 5 saves for this game (but yes, caching may present further requirements).

I was just having a dig at monkeymagic for his retarded contribution but I'd rather not have 1/5 of my card taken up by one save! Microsoft do need to rethink their Memory Card strategy though I agree, I think they are just fearful of using existing formats and opening up exploits.

See the difference is the HDD has value, where as with the Network Adapter it was questionable cause of support. HDD is a big memory card, you can DL Live Arcade games, demos, and other content. Eventually any avid Xbox owner will benefit from having the HDD and HDD only games are only another reason. I don't really care about HDD only games cause I'll have a HDD, they don't call it the Tard pack for nothign afterall.

While all that is 100% true, the cost/size ratio is way fucking off base.

Then again, memory cards in general has always been absolute rape.

Just like most normal consumers I don't care to calculate the price per megabyte - I'd just want the game to work for as little investment as possible.

In that regard:

- 512MB stick - $35
- 1GB stick - $70
- 13GB X360 HDD $100

Of course consumers are more likely to already own a 512MB or 1GB stick than they are an XBox HDD not to mention mem stick prices will have dropped by the time PS3 launches.
 
At this point if I was MS, i'd make the HDD pack standard now, and offer those who bought a core to a free first party game of their choice.. but that's just what I would do.

Also for all those saying they should bundle the HDD, no point now the damage is done and bundling the HDD doesn't allow them to loss lead and undercut Sony early on as it adds to the cost of the system.

13 useable gigs.

The damage isn't necessarily done. Don't Core packages account for less than 50% of sales? That's only a few hundred thousand units in each region. If they cut the Core now, in a year or two the percentage of Core packages on the market would be very, very low. The longer the Core sticks around, the more screwed they are later on.

I don't see why you think they can't loss lead with the HDD. The Premium pack is 400 dollars today. It can be cheaper in 11 months.

It is techincally 20 gigs, but 7 gigs are used up by "phantom" data somehow (supposedly) relating to their totally shitty backwards compatibility. You can't access it no matter how hard you try. So, effectively, you have a 13 GB HD.
 
If they don't axe the core system... it will eventually dominate sales. Right now, the "hardcore"-ish are buying. Of course they won't touch a core. Though there was one mom that specifically was asking which line she needed to wait in for the "cheapest version." She was there in plenty of time to get a premium. There will be lots of people like this once the initial craze is gone.

Cache, system/game updates, BC emulator + cache for BC games. Oh and secret Microsoft spyware and malicious trojans that will destroy your home entertainment system.
 
MS is horrible at keeping comittments. Absolutely the worst.

All games rendered at 1280x720? No.
All games will be required to use FSAA? No.
All games except MMO games can be played without the hard drive? No.

These are the three that stick out for me.

Show me a game that is out that doesn't use any AA.
And about the 1280x720, I don't think there is any real proof that PGR3 doesn't render at that resolution.
 
As a HDD owner I have no issues with this. If you want this or any of the new games that require it, man up on an HDD. It was called the retard pack for a reason.

IMO this is just the opening of the floodgates, to make way for other games Like Gears of War to run correctly on the system with no compromises.

Um, I'd say the various native screenbuffer screenshots from folks like BlimBlim, plus the deafining silence and refusals to answer from Bizarre when asked about it, is just about all the proof a rational person needs.

That said, it's all silly. MS never said anything about internal rendering resolution AFAIK, and nobody really seems to notice the reduced resolution until they know it is there. Overall image quality has a lot more factors than framebuffer resolution.

Can somebody show the quote where MS said there will never, ever be a game that requires a hard drive except for MMO? Who made the quote and what was the exact text?

PGR3 doesn't use AA, it runs at 600p and it doesn't even have AF (no X360 titles do ATM). Inexcusable.
 
I don't see what the big to-do is about this. I thought most people around here either got the premium or bought a hard drive. Now we're complaining that a game exists that requires it? *boggles*
 
I remember people were bitching about MS forcing everyone to render their games at 1280x720.. Then came PGR3 wich renders at a lower resolution in favor of the engine not utilizing tiling and people still bitched. I also remember people bitching about games not taking advantage of the HDD.. and now we have a game that completely takes advantage of it and we still see people bitching. Sad thing is that the people of the two camps are the same people.. So conclusion is that they bitch for the sake of bitching. If it annoys you that much like the guy who had suicidial thoughts because of some sale chart numbers(ohh no PSP was outselling DS in UK!), I recommend you to switch hobby.. It isnt for you. You arent ready for it...

21 saves, biggest save is 250mb, with a huge database size set..
that said, I couldn't think of playing FM on anything other than a PC though. PC FTW in this case!

Note that he didn't say there never would be such a game. Should he have shut his mouth? You bet. But all along we've all known that there would be at least MMO at some point that would require HDD. Mock outrage is disingenous.
