Xbox360: First game only with Harddisc playable

What is the big deal?

Judging from people with previous versions of this game save files reach over 200 megs. It says "HDD REQUIRED" on the front of the box. Buy the hdd (Why would you buy a memory card instead?) or don't save the game.

And about the 1280x720, I don't think there is any real proof that PGR3 doesn't render at that resolution.

Blimblim posted a frame buffer grab that was 1024x600. That was proof enough, unless you think the guy who runs an xbox site has something against xbox..

PGR3 doesn't use AA, it runs at 600p and it doesn't even have AF (no X360 titles do ATM). Inexcusable.

I have no idea what two out of those three things are and PGR3 still looks like Fried Gold on my HDTV. Inexcusable? On what planet.

MS is horrible at keeping comittments. Absolutely the worst.

All games rendered at 1280x720? No.
All games will be required to use FSAA? No.
All games except MMO games can be played without the hard drive? No.

These are the three that stick out for me.

What about the lack of BC updates?

I should think everyone here would be glad. Unless anyone here actually owns the retard pack (bwahahaha!), this means potentially better games for all you guys with hard drive support. I can see why it's cause for concern for other people, and Microsoft being unclear and misleading on the issue is disturbing, but if you have a hard drive more power to you.

A brief history of GAF:

1. Microsoft announces two SKUs.

2. GAF posters with no intention of buying a 360: "Oh teh noes!! Now developers will never support the harddrive! What will become of us! Damn you Microsoft!"

3. Time passes. Developers support the hard drive.

4. GAF posters who in fact haven't bought a 360: "Oh teh noes!! Developers are using the hard drive! What will become of us! Damn you Microsoft!"

5. The End

I dunno who's pwned, since nobody said it never happened. I just wanted to see the specifics.

Note that he didn't say there never would be such a game. Should he have shut his mouth? You bet. But all along we've all known that there would be at least MMO at some point that would require HDD. Mock outrage is disingenous.

Oh for god's sake you sound like a politician. Stop damage controlling everything.

This question has been posed a bunch of times already. The big deal is that MS decieved those who trusted them when they said that all games would be playable without the HDD (sans MMOs). Allards quote sums up what the big deal is.

It's not "criminal ZOMG!", but it is a basic bait and switch. (from MS? no!)

6. Moral of this story: Dual SKU was retarded and useless at launch.

I have to wonder what all that data is used for...if it's really necessary or the files are large because of lazy programming. I mean, think all the information PS1 RPGs managed to fit into 8 kilobyte save files!

Actually, I wan that game. I never played FM series before... and I wouldn't mind playing it on my 360.

I just wish there was no region coding - if they are NOT bringing some game over to some other region for almost certain - they should make the game region free. :(

I see it this way - having some HDD-only games won't really hurt MS in the long run, but it sure won't help them in any way. They aren't in 1st place, they have alot of ground to gain on Sony. They need to avoid these stupid little fuck ups. It's no big deal, but if MS wants to beat Sony, they need to pick their battles. If they knew, or could have accurately guessed months ago that sooner or later, there will be a very small percentage of games that will require the HDD and just said it long ago and then moved on, they wouldn't have this problem to begin with. But no, they have to trot Allard out like a tool and have him say something that will only come back to bite them in the ass.

God save GAF if Halo 3 turns out like Perfect Dark. Singleplayer for everyone, Multi only for those with the add-on. Of course, the ram expansion didn't cost $100.

I thought region coding was up to the developer? If so, I hope this isn't because I want to try this also. Anybody know how many PAL games are region-free?

Football Manager tracks player statistics, player histories, results for thousands & thousands of matches (including detailed stat breakdowns), league histories, team histories & transfer records etc for however many number of countries you want, from the top league to the lowest amateur leagues in that country.

It really is the most in-depth simulation around.

Well, is the game playable without the hdd?

Probably.

But it won't be savable without the hdd.

So Allard skates by on a technicality! ;)

Not quite :P

From Sega's FM site: Please note: This is a hard-drive-only game.

That doesn't suggest optional use, but mandatory use.

Although you could convincingly argue that he gets by on the technicality of his use of present tense :P

So, uh, theres alot of apologists here. Sure, we're smart enough to buy the premium, but to say this is negligible for other consumers...

Oh and its a twist to say that Allard was referring only to current titles. Without specifically saying "all titles", he certainly inferred it.

Its not surprising though, just another X360-ism. How popular is the game?

given the supply issues , the core/bundle situation was totally retarded.

They should have went with the one SKU with HDD and then at least they could have used the HDD.

Saying that, 20gig isn't a massive amount of space, so they'd need a higher capacity drive at a later date and at a reasonable price.

Perhaps the strategy is to move to higher capacity drives after a year or so and then dump the price of the 20gig HDD - then at least games can use the damned thing!

Either way, standard HDD should have been there in all units.

"Its not surprising though, just another X360-ism. How popular is the game?"

this game? in Europe? pretty popular if its the one made by the CM team (?)

Yup, it's the "real" CM since Sports Interactive lost the CM license.

And popular doesn't quite cut-it, god-in-a-game for those that care about it, a veritable life-stealer of a spreadsheet of a game.

I know a few people for whom CM is the only game they play, or have ever played.

yeah, i've lost a lot of time to CM.

I remember one of the older versions had a bug...

Ipswich Town were missing from the game (given that's the team i support... that was a bit of a pain)

a patch came out, but it replaced Crystal Palace with Ipswich Town. As i was living in southlondon , and my flat mate was an avid Palace and CM fan, this made our 2 player games impossible :(

Supporting them or the fact they were missing from the game?

i know you glory boys find it hard to understand! ;)

I believe Shankley described it as a marriage that there is no chance of getting out of. Surely you'd understand that, as it came from a Liverpool great? ;)

(i've actually seen liverpool as much as i've seen Ipswich by the way, i lived in Liverpool and used to go pretty often - this was the "Razor Ruddock" generation though....)

Was fun seeing us beat you 1-0 at home when you had 34 shots and we had 1. lolz.

Lost hours? Hell I could have lost relationships to CM once-upon-a-time :P

Although I have to admit I always loved Anco's Player Manager on the Amiga more, Just the right amount of management depth (i.e. Lite) with all the glory of Dino Dini's Kick Off! in one package, sheer gaming heaven.

man, happy days.

It's a shame Goal! was such a buggy mess :(
and the less said about the PC Kick off games the better...

SWOS should get a mention because that was a good laugh, although i tread carefully around the SS/KO rivalry - i liked both, but was brought up on Kick Off (ST version).

But yeah, SWOS nearly ruined my studies...

Haha, old fights, KO vs SS, c64 vs Speccy, Amiga vs Atari, Snes vs Megadrive, how times have changed now we've all grown up :P

Although one thing has not changed, I still feel sorry for anyone who bought an Oric :P

ha ha.

Did you see that there is a new SS coming out?

"Although one thing has not changed, I still feel sorry for anyone who bought an Oric :P"

lol - before i had a spectrum, i had a Dragon 32... Everyone used to laugh, but i loved it.

New SS?, Cool, I hope it's better than Goal, but I'll have to take a gander.

I've probably mentioned this before, but my Uncle, and his epileptic friend were responsible for over 75% of the Dragon 32's game catalog, Dragon were so self-conscious of this that they had to make up MANY pseudonyms for them, but they could knock a title out a day between them :lol

(Dragon used to deliver the latest Speccy & c64 titles to them and they'd get told "We want our version, Saturday OK?" and my uncle would sigh and say "Yeah...")

yeah - i remember :) Tom Mix and all that :)

I have fond memories of the machine - i just wonder how good the games really were.... perhaps i should pull out the emu? :)

I really, really, really want 360 to be a strong competitor to the PS3, but I'm really starting to get worried. They had better drop the Core pack this year. The lessened losses they get from charging a hundred bucks for a 20gig hard drive is going to kill them in the long run.

Fixed.

Anybody who has played Football Manager on PC before must have seen this coming. I know I did, especially since SI Games said it was going to be as fully featured as the PC game. The save files & player database are huge. It's a pretty unique game so I don't think it suddenly signals an explosion of HDD only games for the 360.

The only reason I would consider buying it is if the Live modes are any good and more importantly if there is a significant performance boost due to the multicore gubbins. The control scheme looked ok in the X05 vids I saw but nothing can beat a mouse for a game like this.

Only for Japan 360s, US 360s needed to install the game.

Nope, you need to install it.

The best part is you cannot uninstall PlayOnline by deleting it from the Memory menu because IT DOESN'T EVEN SHOW UP. The only way to kill it is from within PlayOnline. So basically, if you want to chew up 4GB of space on someone's Xbox, just install the FFXI beta; they'll never know it's there. :(

By the way, were all of you people sleeping when the FFXI beta came out? That's the first game to require the HDD, duh!

7. The HDD should be a standard feature of the 360. The launch games would have been much better if they could have used the HDD for data streaming and caching

*Looks at Perfect "20 second load time" Dark Zero*

Microsoft need to dump the Tard pack ASAP and make the HDD a standard feature from now on

Doesn't Final Fantasy require the HDD?

Yes, However... (damage control)

PS2 HDD is 40GB and came with FFXI Online & Tetra Master
+ free 3 months of play
+ free PlayOnline email account
+ free PlayOnline buddy list, messaging, & chat
+ free DVD player update (actually made a visual difference)
+ You can store PS2 and PS1 game saves on it

*With HDD Loader Free and, either the memory card exploit or swapmagic, you can install many games directly on the HDD.*

And to get back on topic...

I am so glad I waited.
Retard Pack is now Vegetable Pack or Comatose Pack or maybe Knuckle Drager Pack.

Also, my dad just picked up the latest Consumer Retards magazine and there was an article on the Xbox360 in there. Ofcourse coming from Consumer Reports you can't expect much, but they did mention that some games would not be playable on the core system.
I guess they knew something before we did.

SEGA Responds To HD Confusion

"Because we wanted to give Xbox 360 users a superior game experience with the same richness and tactical depth that Football Manager has traditionally offered, we asked Microsoft whether we could develop Football Manager 2006 to be a Hard Drive only game. Microsoft agreed as they wanted the best possible game for their console, and with Xbox Live multiplayer being incorporated into the title, we now have a complete Football Manager experience for console gamers, the first time in the franchise's history." Still doesn't tell us WHY it is required...

I thought Sega published the FM titles in the US as "World Soccer Manager"? Unless that's changed, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to get the game.

There are Soccer manager games in the states? This is news to me.
