XboxEra Podcast claims select PS3 games will be native on PS5, no cloud streaming

Meryl Streep Doubt GIF

I'm tired of these XboxEra guys talking about anything PlayStation. That said, I do expect them to come at some point, but PS5 only, unlike PS1/PS2/PSP classics which are also on PS4. Maybe PS Vita too.

these numpties have no sources or insider knowledge, especially on anything PlayStation...

lets just politely ignore them.
It's weird they used an image where 3 out of the 4 games are already playable natively at higher res and framerate. The only one that isn't is MGS4.

The only thing it can be true is the fact that the PS3 server for cloud streaming aren't eternal and CELL / RSX processor is not product today. One day, Sony need to remplace this PS3 Server to something new (and fast)..
On PS4 ? Nah, impossible, but PS5 can make it... or... PS5 Pro can do it far better.

Curious how they do this. Sure PC CPUs can now brute force it since we're now 17 years past even Cell's weirdness, but it's still hit or miss on emulation performance, and it really likes mapping Cell's SIMD to AVX-512 (128 registers x 128-bit per SPE to AVX-512's 32 registers x 512-bit), which the cut down Zen 2 in the PS5 doesn't have. Given that they own the systems and can do a better job than emulators trying to poke around black boxes it's probably more possible, but I would be curious on a technical talk on how they did the Cell's weirdness even now.

Murder is a bold bet, I like it.

Lies. Also most of those games have been rereleased. MGS4 will come soon with Vol. 2.

Just get a slim PS3 for 50 bucks. One of the best purchases I made last year.

And then you can find gems like the Castlevania games at 3 bucks in flea markets.

Are they reprogramming these gems?
It's pretty obvious no to your question. They've been "reprogramming" select ps3 games for 15 years, if we were getting any more from Sony it'd have happened already. So either it's emulation or it's not happening.

But The screenshot might be one of the dumbest choices for that question there, given that 3 of 4 already have at least one remaster available.

I always go to Xbox podcasts to get news on Playstation. Likewise I've been listening to Wrestling Soup podcasts for my fix of Euro 2024. Waiting on them to update me, nothing so far.

I'm hoping this has some truth or we get a Warhawk remake/remaster. That was the best PS3 multiplayer game.

It's XboxERA...

you know, the same place that pads scores for various Xbox 1P games. With a guy there (Nick) who blamed PlayStation for Microsoft delaying RedFall & Starfield back inn 2022? And was still begging for MS to buy more publishers even just a couple months ago?

Yeah I don't think they're credible for PS-related stuff outside of the SOPs/Showcases and that was just due to people accessing Youtube upload backends :/

Xbox Era breaking news about PS3 on PS5.

What a time to be alive.

Because it's probably false.

Even if it's true, I'll wait for more reputable places to mention it.

IF any of this is true....it might be possible through an optional add-on disc drive with some processing to offload some PS3 emulation on it?

I was thinking something like how the SEGA MegaDrive & 32X would've handled splitting of processing duties in the past for games, and the new disc drives for PS5 connect through USB-C which can handle data, video and power if they're full-rate (even just data in this case would be enough).

I would expect games that don't use the full capabilities such as launch titles like Resistance and Genji Days of the blade. Yes, they may be have come up with a solution to emulate SOME stuff now. I expect them to also drop random shit out of a hat like Gripshift and Cash Guns Chaos, and Calling all cars

Via emulation or straight ports?

The collections make sense (UC & GOW), but how they decide which other games to work on is going to be a crapshoot. Plus third parties aren't going to go near their games, so it's left to Sony to broker deals.

Close but the rumor is backwards. Cell development never stopped at Sony. Currently they're able to virtualize 2 full PS5s and a few dozen instances of WinRAR on a single PS3. They're considering releasing a firmware update enabling the play of PS5 games, they're just figuring out how to monetize it. Beyond the obvious defense industry implications of course.

Stop it.

The only thing still held hostage on PS3 with any worth is MGS4, but we are 100% getting some port/emulation of that game on PS5 via volume 2 MGS collection.

I mean, this isn't really a huge surprise. Sony can't have PS3s doing cloud gaming forever for PS Plus.

They have PSOne and PSP emulation and since like 2 weeks ago PS2 as well. PS3 is next.

I think Shinobi and Grubb have mentioned at different times that Sony is working on PS3 emulation over the past 2 or 3 years.

Watch it be the shitty ports that Devs loaded on to the PowerCore and ignored the SPE, hence why some PS3 games will run native 🤣

Yeah cause stuff like Resistance (3 games), Killzone 2 and 3, countless remasters that played a lot better on PS3 than PS2 that Sony released around that time, Infamous 1 and 2, 3 Ratchet & Clank games, MGS4 as you said, games like Catherine, LittleBigPlanet 1 and 2, some Yakuza games i think. Let's not forget that not everyone has Xbox or PC, there's stuff like Bioshock, Portal, etc...

There's plenty of games.

I don't speak for the masses but I can't be the only one that accepts cloud gaming as a viable choice for PS3 games. It really works great where I live but fiber enables that.

I played through infamous 1 and 2 and a couple other games completely on cloud.

Anythings possible but I doubt this is true.

I had a wild theory that the tempest audio chip being "as powerful as a PS3" was how they were gonna get PS3 games to run natively. So you'd just lose it's function for 3D audio which those games didn't have to begin with.
