XCOM 2 (PC/Mac/Linux, Firaxis, November 2015) announced [Up: New info/screens in OP]

I'm hoping the reason that they are going with PC exclusive with this is due to doing interesting stuff with the procedural generation. Procedurally generating maps can be a very RAM intensive process which is something the new consoles are a bit lacking in.

I mean I didn't even think that Divinity or Wasteland 2 would be coming to consoles and here we are.

Divinity and Wasteland 2 were always touted to be coming to Xbox 1 at the least, Larian saying Xbox would be a natural fit and what long long before the announcement. Here we have the game designer from the outset saying it's a PC exclusive.

I'm not saying it's never going to come to consoles, you never know what happens, but different circumstances than your examples I guess.

It'll be interesting to see how air combat is handled in a game where you're not intercepting UFOs from space. Or whether there's air combat at all...

I wouldn't miss it much, and it's fairly trivial in EU2012/EW, but older fans won't like it if the strategic layer becomes even more shallow.

I'd like a "casual" mode where soldiers don't die permanently...i hate perma death. can they just go to the hospital for like 3 missions basically meaning I can't use them for the next 3 missions instead, pls?

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
Oh damn. Time to finish Enemy Unknown and the Expansion then. OH LORDY.

This happens when they get injured already. ;)

But death is an essential part of the game's design. It's what gives your decisions weight. It's what makes the combat non-trivial. And it's why Ironman is the only correct way to play.

There is always Xenonauts if that is your thing.

Procedural maps and mod support should give it plenty of legs.

How are consoles even "a bit" lacking in ram so far? 16GB SDRAM is not the standard in PCs yet. No Man Sky has procedurally generated stuff.

I haven't heard many developers complaining that 8GB is too few memory. Maybe next year that'll be more common but I don't see most developers pushing that envelope too strongly.

That's Tomb Raider though, there aren't an influx of strategy games on the new consoles which is why I'm disappointed. Oh well I'm sure even if it never comes there's a chance for them to at least remaster enemy within with more content and whatnot

XCOM moved nearly twice the units on PS3 & 360 as it did on PC, so unless XCOM 2 is rotten with F2P mechanics (which is an easier sell on PC & mobile), I would be shocked if this sequel doesn't make its way to current gen consoles eventually. If they are leaning super hard into providing a robust toolkit for modders though, it would make sense that resources are thrown at PC/Mac first, and then a leaner version for consoles later.

Why do people like TFTD so much? That game was rather bad, and pretty much the only reason for its existence was a stupid UFO Defense bug nobody found out (until way later).

I want to know if the enemies now actually patrol, or if they still teleport around because programming AI is 'hard'.

Apart from that, I'm keen.

XCOM sold nearly 6 million on last gen consoles?

receipts now.

it's not like a platform holder is paying them to make the game "exclusive first", if it's coming out to consoles as well they could have just said it is

This is good.

I really liked my first few playthroughs of the new X-Com. It wasn't everything I wanted, but I understood the hard decisions they had to make for a new audience.

Long War changed everything. Let's do this.

I don't think EW changes anything so drastically such that you would go from not liking it to liking it, but it does add a lot more depth to the game. Definitely worth playing in my opinion, but I loved the original too, even if I felt like I had "cracked it" by the end.

I don't know. I guess my main problem with it was that it just felt really light on content.
I could deal with not having Time Units and aliens getting an extra turn to move when I spot them for some reason (I'm glad that seems to be gone in this sequel though) and I could even forgive them for not including base invasions....
But after a while it just felt like I was doing the same thing over and over again.

It's only 7,50 so I guess I'll give it another try.

Xenonauts is based on the old XCOM games from the 90s, so quite.

Awesome, no wonder it looked so similar. I could definitely go for another game like that! And as much as it must suck for console only owners, I gotta admit it's refreshing to see the words 'PC exclusive', especially from a larger publisher.

How do procedural maps suggest "continued support / service?" Don't they suggest the exact opposite?

I understand your point. I was thinking "procedural maps" means you want people to keep playing "forever", but to keep them hooked and/or coming back, on top of that you'd have 'events' with new loot / weapons / skins / enemies, bump up the level cap or some such, which are a less costly and more 'infinite' way to support a game than to try and pump out new campaigns every 2 months.

So procedural maps take care of the actual moment to moment gameplay, but the "meta" motivation would come from somewhere else.

I may be totally wrong though. But that's why "procedural maps" and mod support etc hinted, to me, "continued support", trying to build a durable community, etc, etc. And so F2P could be an option.

I'm not trying to call doom on this game by the way, I enjoyed the last XCOM, but I also have nothing against free to play in itself (it's the game that matters).

Uh, what? Earlier posts in this thread cited 100k-ish copies on consoles combined and 2mil+ on Steam

Well, pity, since I won't be able to play it, but I'm sure it will be a great game like the previous one.

Loved EU, so I'll definitely dive into this. Graphically though that in-game screenshot looks pretty rough for a PC exclusive about to be released in 5 months.

No it didn't. It sold almost 3 million on PC and sub 200k on consoles.

I really want to know where people keep getting this idea that it did good on consoles let alone better than PC.

You heard "PC games are dead" and ran with it, huh?

Source, please? The links given by other people in the thread said that the PC version sold more than 10 times than the console versions.

In what alternate universe did it sell twice the pc sales.

Uhhhhhh.....

Oh wow, those details sound amazing. I wonder what they'll say as their reason this game isn't on console, especially if it eventually does come to console. Also, head-to-head mp again? Awesome! Please let there be 2v2!

but like... i don't find it fun that way. i like the the one that came out a few years ago but eventually stopped playing because i restart the missions all the time if one of my character dies. its just the way i play, which is why casual+hard is the way i play fire emblem! couldn't get into the series before they introduced that mode. besides, you'd still have your Ironman mode, no one is going to take that out(well at least I don't want them to take it out), just give me a "sissy" mode where no one dies permanently.

So this is where I'm currently looking...

[Edit: hmm... VGC h a r t z is a banned site? didn't know that]

Maybe they only report physical sales? It's listing global PC sales as 640k, PS3 sales 510k and X360 with 600k.
