XCOM: Enemy Unknown |OT| Neo GAF is Under Alien Control

My story of woe is on steam, but i had rented it on the ps3 and PS+ downloaded a patch for it overnight as well. So there's a patch for PC and PS3. I would assume 360 also but I don't have one of those.

I disagree. With +3 health, you have at least a chance of surviving a light plasma shot, and a an alien grenade. Also, later with carapace, your guys can still get 1-hotted easily. +3 health is often the difference between a lost soldier or not.

At that point, you are usually at the point where you can bring enough firepower to bear to simply work out of a philosophy of not getting shot at, or, in the rare case where you might get shot at, crapify the odds via suppression and smoke grenades that they rarely even bother shooting.

Though I agree in general impossible is even harder w/ this change, I only lost two guys in my last impossible run and one was a high HP rookie that I had to sacrifice in a council mission deliberately. The other died in the second or third mission.

Well, controllers still don't properly rotate the globe in the Geoscape and the stupid mouse pointer still doesn't go away when using a controller. New patch pls.

What do you even use Geoscape for? I've looked at it (using the superior PS3 controller on PC) for maybe all of 30 seconds across a few playthroughs now.

This is a bloody nuisance, I agree. Seems like a funny oversight.

On another point, watching through the Beaglerush LP videos it became very obvious very quickly that I play far too hastily, that I don't take advantage of flanking enough and that I clearly give too much credit to half-shield cover (probably an advantage of only playing on Easy and Normal difficulties, where the fail state isn't as harsh).

I mean there are missions where Beaglerush has literally set his troops up in two covering positions (using full cover as often as possible) and then just sat in overwatch for turns at a time, letting the aliens come at him (bro), where I might have looked to push up and create action instead.

It's been eye opening, and already I am looking forward to me next playthrough!

/edit: Also noted how important he plays up line of sight, often lining his troops up so that line of sight to (and from) the enemy is accounted for. As for sales, if digital isn't counted than my sale doesn't count.

Got excited about patch.

loaded up current save and the game crashed within 5 mins...

A new record i imagine. guess ill wait for a patch for this patch?

Just started playing XCOM on the 360. I have no idea what I'm doing but it's fun. I have some suspicions that I'm doing it all wrong and it's going to all crumble apart, ending in my defeat, but ehhh it's addicting.

Why is it possible to move interceptors/firestorms to continents without satellites? Isn´t the sole use for those units to defend the satellites, or am I missing something?

You need satellites to discover UFO's, so yes, interceptors without satellites are useless.

You use them to shoot down UFOs whose missions include much more than seeking out satellites, but yeah if there's no satellite coverage staffing interceptors is useless.

Man this game is addictive. Two days in a row I said "I'll sleep early to get some work done in the morning" and both days I just stayed up all night. Just one more mission, one more council report...

I feel I'm about to beat it in normal, got satellites set up everywhere, no more research, no more room for more facilities, etc. I take this as sort of a test drive, learning the ropes, cheating (save and loading if I don't like the outcome too much), knowing what every type of enemy does, etc., preparing myself for an ironman run. It'll probably be on normal or classic, I don't even want to try what impossible's like.

Patch is up on XBL. 4mb.

Checked if my latest save was still working. Existing soldiers keep their bugged HP, and hired recruits have the corrected HP.

Finally got to play the PS3 demo. Are the controls actually improve din the retail copy? I found selecting locations to travel to be an issue. Granted I'm not going to get the accuracy of a mouse but I thought it would be at least better then it was. If I could use the PS Move that would be great.

Controllers are probably a little better than a mouse in this case so I'm not sure what the problem is. This may be obvious but it bears mentioning that there is an underlying grid so your movement in coverless areas will always snap to the nearest invisible grid square.

Unless you're having trouble with multifloor locations? A controller is better there as well.

edit: There were some improvements to the UI in the latest patch but I don't think that any of the corrected issues were apparent in the demo.

What's the most the games has thrown at you at once so far?

Yesterday I beat a battleship on impossible, and at one point I had 3 sectopods w/escort, 6 elite mutons, 2 mutons and a berserker. :/

I had to start it over and be really careful not to aggro them all again. And even then, I had to fight 2 sectopods at once, then the third the turn after because they were roamers.

Gonna be fun when I play i/i.

Doing a bomb disposal mission on a bridge map, I get near the end and I can finally see the bomb- aggro 3 thin man, who proceed to aggro 3 more thin man, who proceed to aggro 3 more thin man. 9 thin man, all behind cover, with no way to flank them, and with only about 4 turns before the bomb explodes. I ran away.

Battleship is always going to be the worst. My battleship had 29 enemies, but I got relatively lucky and never had to take on more than two sectopods at a time. I did have a nice hall where I had to bring down a sectopods, 6 heavy floaters, and 2 mutons and a berseker, but as long as I had enough DPS to bring down the sectopod (not too bad) and could stay in cover, telekentic field wrecks things as long as you don't clump up and eat grenades.

I skipped kinetic field in my other playthroughs, but in my current impossible game I'm lucky enough to have 6 psi soldiers without farming them . Definitely going to set that ability to one or two of them.

A perfect time for rockets!

I had telekenetic field on a bulletstorm heavy-it was amazing. Shoot once, then pop that after everyone made their moves/shots. It just ruins enemy to-hit chances. The only side effect was grenades, but that's generally a lot better than heavy plasma with to-hit bonuses.

Mind Control was underwhelming.

Mind Control is a party trick. It looks cool and in some cases, it might be useful. Telekinetic Field is a workhorse. +40 Defense is a lot. It's the same value as High Cover. If you're in High Cover, it's an easy 80% defense. That makes it very unlikely to be hit. And unlike Smoke grenades, it recharges, you're not limited to one or two per battle.

What a scary thought.

Also, he's wrong about the sales figures.

All in all, he's either trolling or a terrible game designer.
He said:
Oh God I’ve created a monster! This post began as an exercise in applying FTP designs to an existing, non-freemium game.

The title is deliberately provocative and does not necessarily mean I would do any or all of the things listed in the post. Personally I would never include the option of reviving units, for example, as it would destroy the whole notion of perma-death which makes the game so exciting.

I wanted to start a discussion on how freemium design methods could be applied to existing games but it seems to have just become another “FTP is evil” thread

Well he kind of invited that harsh criticism by mentioning sales units in the first paragraph.

Edit: As for the free to play aspect. XCOM works only because of how tightly designed it is. XCOM as it is would not work if any of the options/items/objects would be held back.

This happened with Deus Ex by locking away a key item behind a pre-order wall. Making a quest line literately impossible to finish without a specific spec.

Patch of the forever:
  • Fixed the camera handling on indoors
  • Fixed the free aiming (YES!)
  • Crazy performance optimization. Its running butter smooth now (60fps)

Maybe it could also be due to having a space between the cars?

Like, a building is one continuous object, but perhaps the car, space, car is causing the calculations to get messed up.

/shrug

After some more testing, I think this is the cause of most flanking bugs. In this situation, you'd have to move beyond the edge of just being able to flank.
