hmm hopefully the patch didn't reset my ini tweaks. Although..i think I over tweaked my dynamic shadows and it seems characters don't cast any shadows at all.

on that note - anyone using some sharpening injectors? I am using the diablo 3 darken injector but with only the sharpen setting. Pretty sweet! Would be nice to use it with smaa also.

I know the game is new and I am really enjoying it so far. I was late on this game and did not follow it at all until after it was released, so please forgive me if this has been answered....

Has any talk been mentioned of addtional MP Maps? I mean 5 maps is a pretty small amount of maps for a game like this.

Had a mission went horribly wrong after capturing a mutton while in the process of fighting off waves of enemies flanking the squad.

Restarted with a new rule: don't capture till the tangos outside of the target capture are down - so far the rule has kept my troops safe although I lost a capture or two at times. Oh well, no wounded, no dead soldiers is always good.

So anyone from EU... can you download the patch? I want to dl it... but not at the cost of not be able to play it...

Yeah. Mine just downloaded something for XCOM that was over a GB in size.

Edit: I haven't used VPN's. I'm still pre-loading.

Just played 45 minutes long escort mission, normal-ironman...

So after I lost my best sniper on the roof - which is stupid and I won't send anyone better without checking it first, I've had first swarm of thin men coming at me from the street.

I've got inside the store and then moved pretty slowly owerwatch this and that, securing the VIP. So one wall of the shop was made entirely from windows and there was a parking lot behind them. I move my soldiers, covering them behind the racks on the side so the unknown enemies from the parking could not surprise me.

Good. Moving forward four turns and wrongly positioned VIP gets it from thin man that jumped from the roof, behind the windows. Mind you that two of my guys on OW missed him. VIP miracurously survived, maybe it was heads down command something, but okay.

Moving forward with squad, setting overwatch, another thin man jumped closer to extraction point and again two guys missed *rage and cussing them for saying what they like to say(what did you say? NO SH*T!), so I hurry there with another one and he misses too.

Thin man in the back poisoned one guy, one guy dies from poisoning and then we were finally able to kill that one thin man, "covered" in my squad. So we run closer to extraction, keeping an eye on that last thin man and then, when sending my soldier between skyranger and wall of the shop(so no cover), knowing it's 50/50per safe that I could dash that VIP to safety. With one health.

We then sweeped the are for thin man that was on roof so my shotgun guy run'd'n'd'gunned-dashed there, only to have thin man jump from the roof to my death trap.

Mission completed. Two of my best guys dead. Squaddies and rookies honored.

Who would have thought that screaming WTF at roll dices would be so intense.
and missing a shot when you are IN THEIR FACE, too.

ed: Also am downloading the patch now. EU, behind pretty slow Spotflux tube.

Hopefuly not, but I will check if it changes my tweaks eitherway. And on that injector thingy - totaly forgot about it!
Hey, in Borderlands 2 I am using this smaa injector. So let's try it in this too!

A couple days later and while I really enjoy the game I do have a few issues/disappointments with it. For example I don't like that 95% of the alien encounters are you just happening to stumble on a group of enemies skulking around together, then they scatter/take cover and then you fight. I prefer the original where sometimes there were lone aliens, and sometimes they patrolled, and sometimes you saw them before they saw you. It makes each level kind of feel the same, unless there's something external going on like the bomb defusal or terror missions. (I know sometimes they like to drop enemies behind or around you to surprise you, but that feels a bit cheap and scripted.)

I also dislike the way enemies teleport in but it only seems to happen at predictable points of a mission so it isn't a big deal. Enemies do patrol the map, by the way. You have to play on Classic or Impossible to see it.

I think this bit from RPS' review is relevant:

There are numerous changes, but the essential one is not one likely to appear on that theoretical comparison list. Where X-COM’s turn-based ground missions were hide and seek, an often frightening hunt for murderous lurkers concealing themselves across dense environments, XCOM’s are more like a war. Unlike those desperate, chilling hunts across cornfields and through barns in X-COM, in XCOM where the aliens are is rarely in question. Their precise location is unknown and of course ever-changing, but their approximate position tends to be self-evident. They’re either already heading towards you, are clearly where the screaming and explosions are, or are turned up in the natural passage of your soldiers moving forwards, making the issue of the day how to get close enough to them to take them out without getting turned into thin red paste wearing a shocked expression.

It’s a game about slowly moving your frontline forwards, meticulously ordering a squad of six1 from cover to cover and making a stream of tactical decisions in order to overcome an enemy that always, always outnumbers them. You’re directing a SWAT team that needs to stick relatively close together (not too close mind, unless watching a grenade liquidate four people at once turns you on), carefully clean out an area and move on, not the spread-out search and destroy agents of 1993. It’s faster and more furious than its 90s ancestor, but it is no less strategic for it.

I do not see any. You mean on your squad roster when viewing characters?

In-mission. Jake was talking about some updates they made to the PC version since the demo build...can't remember in which interview, but that was one of the things he mentioned. He also said some things about the bug with enemies shooting through walls being fixed. Just wondering if this is the patch he was referring to, but maybe it isn't.

I don't capture anything unless I have every other soldier covering my capture specialist and a medic close by. Once you have an enemy isolated, hurt and surrounded they usually keep going into overwatch and they become easy targets for capture. It helps a lot if yu can have someone to suppress them as well. I've captured: sectoids, thin men, floaters, mutons and 2 berzerkers. I try to capture at least one alien every mission. I think the weapons you can recover from live specimens are worth the risk. I don't know if you can capture Chryssalids, probably not, but at this point they are kill on sight for me.

I believe they said they were looking at UI tweaks like that and were going to see what they could do.

I don't think I even ever want to attempt a Chryssalid capture.

I had a chance to do it in my previous game. One stood for a whole turn with 2 health near all my soldiers, but it was just the mission after I lost my capture dude and I didn't reassign my Arc. Next mission was a civilian evac with like 10 of those fuckers and my squad was wiped for good, lol.

Well the guide is saying there is no value for capturing a chrysalid. And in other news i had my first bug on ps3. Was playing a mission and they just introduced cyberdisks and im doing well against the onslaught of about 9 mutons. Well i get some courage and finally sift through the horde and leave 2 mutons standing both severly weakened. I am able to stun one and have the other on lockdown. Mind you my squad is weakened because of the battle prior. And it goes into the enemy turn. .... That was an hour ago and its still thinking. Looks im gonna have to wait until i come home from work and see if the game decides to attack.

When this happened to me I just alt-F4'd and went back in. One nice thing about ironman is that it saves your progress every turn, heh.

I also had a weird bug where I couldn't move my soldiers, or shoot, or anything. Quitting and reloading fixed that too,

Oh interesting... Well at least on normal difficulty it always seems like they're just standing there when I get there, waiting politely to be discovered. I guess I could test it by turtling right when I get into a map and waiting to see if any enemies come by.

I read it as mutton all the time.

ALL THE TIME.

It's funny, yet weirdly apt.
You are not alone.

Don't know if bug. But last night when replaying the tutorial I deliberately aborted during the intercept UFO part, after both interceptors were aborted it took me to the science lab and I was not able to exit, save or do anything else other than read previous research entries.

I have absolutely encountered patrols on Normal. My soldier heard Mutons shuffling about so I left him on overwatch, sure enough a couple turns later they barged in from the top part of the map. I didn't move anybody up there, I was fighting a cyberdisc with the rest of my squad on the other side of the map.

I tried to capture a chyrssalid and it didn't work. I had him down to 2 health, my rookie standing RIGHT next to him and I didn't have the option to use the ARC thrower. It was grayed out. Not sure if bug or just can't do it but I haven't tried since.

Definitely patrols and roaming mobs on Normal. My last mission I was in a UFO trying to hunt down the last couple guys that I hadn't uncovered yet and I kept getting sound cues from them circling the UFO. I eventually flushed them out but I had to split up to do it. It seemed like they were running from me (I HAD wiped out the rest of the aliens inside the UFO).

You can't capture them. I think it might say this in the autopsy. Notice that they never get the ring around them that you normally get for a unit you can capture showing the range you have to be in to use the arc thrower.

Anyone know what the patch fixed for pc? I'm not at my pc now to check if all the stupid bugs have been fixed. There are a lot like when trying to edit your soldiers they all look exactly the same, the bug that screws up the hq hub and doesn't let you quit, and even a bug where one of your guys that are kia somehow ressurect themselves from the dead and can participate in missions with no downtime.

What would you interrogate them for anyways?

"Whatcha thinkin 'bout?"

"Oh nothing...zombies and horrific impregnation"

I did enjoy selling live ones on the black market in the original though. What could possibly go wrong?

I'm playing classic, but when a mob stumbles across my squad while Im already engaged with another group of xenos... I usually let out an audible "Fuck..." cause that means some operators are probably about to die. That's when the camera should pan around your squad Bad Boys II style, cause shit just got real. Two front war.

Edit - Oh right, the whole reason I quoted this. I have a strange bug where when a patrolling mob stumbles across my squad... we will exchange some shots, and then later at a different turn it will play the "reveal" cinematic like a just found them, even though we've been killing each other for a turn or two now haha.

Shiv bug has ruined 2 ironman games for now now :/

Can't seem to fix it either.

Whats the Shiv bug??

Heartbreaking moment time. During an intense terror mission I headed towards some building. You could hear the civillians screaming and dying inside which meant that more than likely there were more aliens being spawned. Had to play a bit recklessly, and ran my Major Street to investigate inside the building. Instantly surrounded by 3 chrysalids and 1 Floating Disc. Knew this was going to be bad, but knowing the run speed of the chrysalids I knew there was no escape. managed to take 1 chrysalids out with rapid fire. A second went down to a combination of 1 sniper and 1 support squad member. My heavy laid some suppresive fire on the disc. My 2nd sniper and my rookie (with a light plasma) miss the 3rd one.

The chrysalid runs straight for the heavy and down she goes. The rookie and the 2nd sniper panic at this point, the sniper takes cover and the rookie shoots straight for the Major. The flying disc finishes the job, moving right up to her position and firing. Then, a miracle happens. Instead of death, she survives in critical condition. Awesome! I shoot down the flying disc and it... explodes right on top of her. Major Street has died.

Panic ensues, and we head for evac. By then 8 civs have died, which means that potentially 8 more corpses have risen from the grave to birth more chrysalids

Erm... so how does squadsight work then?

I have a sniper with the ability and another soldier can see two aliens but the sniper can't target them??

XCOM: Enemy Unknown patch notes for 10/11/12
Hi all,

We wanted to let you know the details for the PC update for XCOM: Enemy Unknown that went live today (10/11/12). I've included the notes on this patch below:

Various visibility/hiding optimizations
Multiplayer text chat support (press J to activate)
Mouse button 4/5 will switch soldiers in the Barracks
ESC hides the movement grid, if you do not want to commit to a move while it is activated
Squad Sight ability optimization
Fixed issue when equipping two grenades with Deep Pockets.
Fixed Rapid Fire sometimes consuming too much ammo.
SHIVs that are damaged will no longer become unusable.
Fixed some hangs/soft crashes in tactical combat.
Replaced software cursor with the operating system cursor to reduce lag and framerate dependence.
Fixed rendering bug which causes some soldier’s hair to appear as if it is rendering on top of environment fog.
1080p movies are now used at all times on the PC.

I think there needs to be a clear line of fire. The other soldier has to spot them but there also cant be any obstruction between the sniper and the alien that could block the shot.

Also looks like according to the patch notes above there has been some optimization to squad sight, so maybe there had been issues in some cases.

Yeah corky, it works amazing with the pad. Once you boot the game it defaults to keyboard and no matter what you do on the pad it does not recognize. Just go to the options and select gamepad for input device and then everything converts to 360 icons. It is a shame that not all games do this (Battlefield 3 I am looking at you).

Problem is when I go change to XB360 controller in the options it just massively slow the game down and give me message to reconnect controller. No amount of driver update or plug/unplug has helped. It works fine with all my other games too...

Except they sometimes don't. Have had a enemy point blank with a shotgun and the percentage was 50. I have a feeling there is something off with some of the percentages that are being reported by the game from time to time. Might be something more to it than just an unnecessary "Probability How does it work?" comment since the odds of missing some of these shots in a row based on the reported percentages are getting into Lottery Winner territory by multiple people. Its not like the game is bug free so I wouldn't doubt it.

Still love the game. One of the best I have played all year.

My own personal guess is that it depends on the panic level -- how scared the solider is... However, we can't see this stat or have control over it.
