Nah, I'm waiting to pick it up at Gamestop tomorrow. Gotta have my feelies. The soundtrack and artbook in particular will be nice to have. Plus, you know, and installation disk. I can download 15GB no problem. But if I don't have to, I'd like to skip it.

Ah, I see. I'm only guessing by the way with regards to it being a 'global aggregate' figure, but it seems likely, unless 'World' just refers to an average of your own games. Might just be a case that the screenshots you've seen (with the '-' for World stats) just happen to all be from players who are playing via offline Steam. Or maybe Firaxis will do weekly updates rather than real-time.

One thing on that stats-summary screen -- it's taking the difficult into account (Normal, Classic, etc.), but it doesn't mention games played through Ironman. Assuming that the World figure *is* a global aggregate (again, at this point I'm just guessing), I can't help but feel that that's a real shame. Save/Loaders are obviously going to have numbers skewed higher. If I'm comparing my run with an average, I'd rather do so only against fellow wo/men of iron.

steam's telling me it's only 12 gb

mind you, i've been downloading since 7pm. It's 1am and it's still got another predicted 2 hours to go. (I stopped for half an hour to update The Walking Dead though)

So, I was fighting in the
alien base
. I take my time and make my way through it with no causalities and eventually kill the
commander
and the level doesn't clear, so I have to backtrack all the way across the map because apparently I missed a trigger for an enemy spawn. It takes me 20 minutes because I'm afraid to spread out my units to look, but I find it...when my support triggers the enemy spawn. That colonel support unit gets critted by a cyberdisc and finished off by the drone. God damn this game.

It's amazing if you can get high ground. On one of the road maps I just had my sniper climb up on top of a truck near the start and never moved her again and she killed an alien every turn after that.

Yep, especially with Damn Good Ground and a Scope, for a massive aim buff. Just park them on top of something and they'll go to town. I also put him on Overwatch with Opportunist and he fries whatever is stupid enough to move.

And then you add Double Tap.

Stuck at work wishing I could play. This year's crop of games has been so poor, this hasn't happened with me since Mass Effect 3.

Put a few hours into it last night, and it's great. Firaxis is a spectacular dev house.

I'm working at home today and it's really dangerous. Getting ready to start some grading and all I want to do is load up the game.

After putting in about twenty hours, I am willling to say that I think I like this game even better than Civ V. I can forsee myself playing this for a long, long time. I hope they release expansions.

Double Tap is awesome. Combining it with Disabling shot is the key to success in Alien Pokemon along with Suppression. I love making it so Mutons can do literally NOTHING.

okay

hopefully when i wake up this damn game will be installed and unlocked and I can get to the GAFCOM

I'm already dead.

So just finsihed my second terror mission... and they do deserve their name. Was on a military base with a squad of six 2 rookies because a lot of my veterans have been injured last mission. After 3 cyber discs and 6 drones appeared in the first 2 turns I thought I was done for. Lost 1 rookie and one of my veterans. But due to 2 perfect rocket launcher shots I somehow managed to beat the cyber discs & co. Then the crysalids started to show up. At this time I had saved 1 civilian and lost 11 already. I decided to stay and fight and the only reason why I did win this is because there was a huge open field and I had all my 4 remaining guys on permanent overwatch (Laser Sniper Rifle - I think that were the best 24 bucks spent all game long). After the mission was over there were about 10 crystalid corpses scattered all over that field.

Result: 6/18 saved. 2 guys lost. Went pretty damn well, I guess.

EDIT: Oh, and the rookie that survived got promoted to Sniper... Awesome, now I have like 7 snipers, 2 support, 2 heavy and 1 assault.. Why, Xcom? Why?

Disabling Shot is a lifesaver and also works well for capturing aliens. Fun thing to also use it for is to hold mind-controlled friendlies at bay. :p

Playing on Normal Ironman still. I had a UFO mission get pretty ugly between an encounter with two Cyberdisks outside and opening a door to find three Sectoid Commanders within. Two killed, two wounded. I ordered some fresh recruits, but while everyone is recovering, I had an abduction mission sprung on me. I only have an experienced Heavy, a pretty fresh Sniper, and a rookie available to go.

Should I go for it? If I don't go, a region is definitely going into panic.

This seems to be a good game to play in the upcoming Winter days in the Comfy Couch, been watching a Stream today (Still am) and I'm really liking, it seems that it can be rather hard and there's a lot to do before going on a mission like researching, building, improving, etc.

I would like to get this on the PS3 but I have no idea how will play with a controller. Lucky, there is a demo.

I also hope that this game sells decent. We need from time to time more types of games and this is a good alternative from the masses. Happy to see GAFfers getting it and supporting it.

I'm playing on PS3 and the game plays great with a controller. They definitely made an effort to create a set of controls and menus that work extremely well with a controller.

They need to get a bug fixing patch out asap.

When playing ironman, it really isn't fun when you start a mission with a SHIV and it has no weapons.

Does anyone know if the plasma sniper rifle has more ammo then the laser sniper rifle? My sniper is putting in some serious work, but between overwatch and doubletap, I have to have him reload almost every other turn.

Got my first bomb defuse match last night. It went without a hitch, made only annoying by the fact that it was 100% thinmen, which with timely kills coated the entire half of the map in poison goo.

Looking at the metacritic user reviews it looks like Xcom has a NMA contingent. I'm not surprised, but man as an old X-com fan I'm utterly thrilled with the new game and so thankful we got a game of this quality.

Ugh, why did you have to pique my curiosity. Now I'm rolling my eyes at this:

Metacritic User said:
Now this is not specifically a "bad" game, and if you are the type of gamer who thought "wouldn't it be cool to command a Gears of War squadron (dressed in Mass Effect armor) in a turn-based game but without all those unnecessary strategic elements, new base building, and micro-managing" then this is the game for you. X-Com EU has loses the overall strategic gameplay, and is all turn-based action with Mass Effect armor and guns.

I've been having a lot of problems with the camera not knowing what level to focus on when someone's walking through a building, areas of the terrain being transparent when they shouldn't be, distance outlines not appearing, etc. It all makes me kind of anxious because the game already locked up on me once.

So far my only *real* gripe with the game is the fact that enemies get a free movement step when unveiled, even when it's your turn.

I get why they do it, they have all the enemies start in packs and it'd be too easy to spot them and rocket them off the map. Honestly I'd rather it was more like the original where enemies spread out over the map and wandered around.

The game is actually being nicer to you than to the aliens, in that the aliens could have all had overwatch on. I remember in the original the way you often found an alien wasn't because you saw it but because you saw its plasma fire heading for your face.

I agree. Though I thought I remember a dev diary where they talked about the enemies moving around even before they had been spotted. I suppose they wander in packs and that free movement is to give them the tactical advantage.

It is possible to take advantage of that though with the sniper's vision item. Throw that far enough out and you can spot (and subsequently squad sight shoot) the enemies before they get that free movement.

Try shooting an alien point blank or one tile away, quite often the soldier points in the complete opposite direction of where the shot actually goes and the dynamic camera has a total spaz attack. The camera still needs a fair bit of work IMO.

Yea the battle scanners are essential, especially when dealing with Crysalids. My last terror mission, I moved a guy 5 feet forward, triggered a crys pack and on their free movement step they all rushed the skyranger. I'd been playing the mission for 10 seconds and I had 3 crysalids in my spawn point. It was a bit ridiculous.

They needed to put a buch more work into the glam cams, I'd love to see different animations for a CQB shot, or see enemies diving into cover on reaction shots, etc. The current system works well basically only on mid-long range shots, where it does admittedly look pretty cool.

It might also work well for misses, like if on those CQB misses instead of your guy looking like a moron, the Alien smacked the gun throwing off your aim.

The way I view it is that the game us just cinematically letting you see when they scatter. They could have just started the aliens in separate areas but showing them dash away when you encounter them makes it more dramatic and cinematic. It adds to the tension. I dont really see them as "getting a turn." Rather I just see it as the game showing you their movement rather than having it occur behind a black curtain before hand.

On some level that turn can be beneficial if you have people on Overwatch when someone spots an enemy, since their initial turn will trigger reaction shots as they scamper around to cover.

Honestly the "Aliens into cover" has to happen, since they are basically given equivelant visual range to you, so if they didn't get to move, they'd be super boned if you found them.

Status Report: Classic Ironman

It has been 2 months since the last status report, which detailed our situation as extremely dire. Egypt and Germany had surrendered, and repeated attempts to respond to alien incursions had been met with defeat and left the world in increasing panic. Funding was low and the ranks of our experienced operators had been decimated.

Immediately following the issuance of that report, India, Japan, and Russia withdrew from the project, seemingly sealing the fate of the project and perhaps the world. Then, in our moment of need, we managed to snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat.

Early yesterday morning, HQ received a priority distress call from the UK. With Lt Soto still in medbay and all other officers KIA, XCOM command staff had no option but to assign our last available operators to the strike team regardless of experience. 4 green rookies, with nothing but standard issue rifles and basic kevlar would be the only responders.

The strike team hit the ground and began a sweep of the perimeter in standard 2 by 2 cover formation. By edging along the perimeter, strike team was able to catch alien patrols unaware and neutralize them before they could retreat and alert their reinforcements. It was crucial to engage the enemy in small doses, as the strike team was outgunned and definitely outmanned. The battle climaxed as strike team breached a marketplace that had been garrisoned by sectoids and thin men. Gunfire and frag explosions rocked the interior of the building, but in the end all ET forces were destroyed. This was huge for our project, finally after so long we tasted victory again. 3 members of the strike team were promoted for their heroics, but the cost was dear. Rookie Martine took reaction fire from a sectoid while breaching the market building and bled out before he could receive medical attention. He will be remembered on the memorial wall with his brothers in arms.

This success led to increased funding and command staff immediately authorized completion of the training school and experimental weapons and armor. As of the date of this report laser rifles are rolling off the assembly line, carapace armor is being fitted to strike team members, and Lt "Raven" Soto has been approved for operational status by medical staff. The council of nations reconvened and approved XCOM for another month of funding, no doubt due to our late success in the UK. The XCOM project now has a 5 man strike team with experienced and newly equipped operaters standing by to respond to the next hostile action. Command is confident this could be the beginnig of a turning point in our defense of Earth.

NMA?

Some of those comments are fun to read though. The original X-com has always been in my Top 10 (just go search for some of the old GAF threads where we makes lists), and I am also thrilled with this game.

Defused a bomb in Germany like a boss! Assault really helps when time (turns) is of the essence.

I had my first bomb mission last night as well(I wrecked house!). I was worried that I would hate having a "timer", but it is executed really well. Just like the escort missions. As soon as that came up I let out an audible groan. I mean nobody likes escort missions, but again executed well.
