Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
SPOILERS for whole series
I've been nostalgic for the 90's lately, and one of my very favorite things to come out of the 90's is the badass female warrior icon: Xena <3333
Seeing how Wonder Woman is shaping up in the new Superman/Batman movie makes me think back on what an effect Xena had on today's strong female TV and movie characters. I love me a tough chick that can kick ass, and I'd rank Xena @ the top of my faves list <3 Xena can go head to head with ANY woman OR man that stands in her way
Lucy Lawless is also an extremely underrated actress in everything she's ever been in from her starring roles as the Warrior Queen, to appearances in Spartacus and the critically acclaimed Battlestar Galactica. Lawd I love this woman
The show was actually a spin-off from Kevin Sorbo's fun mess Hercules (that was a bit goofy for my tastes). She started off the series as a warlord with a dark past, and when her own show started, at it's heart, it truly was a tale of redemption. She's aided throughout the show by her best friend (and later possibly lover?) Gabrielle and her obnoxious, bumbling sidekick Joxer (by the time his death rolls around, you do grow to care for the guy)
The show was rooted in Greek mythology for a good part of the beginning, but in later seasons branched out to Middle Eastern influences as well as Japanese/Chinese inspired villains/stories. It does come back to greek myth for season 5 when the twilight of the gods takes places (Season 5 is the best season in my opinion)
Xena had some of TV's great villains too, from the psychotic Callisto, the menacing Amazon queen Alti, to my favorite, the cold and calculating Athena who takes command of the greek pantheon after Zeus and Hera are killed. Not only did the show have really strong female leads, most of the major villains were strong females too. Truly ahead of it's time <3
It's amazing the show made it 6 seasons. One of the hardest things for many Xena fans to watch is the finale, where she is beheaded. Gabrielle has a chance to bring her back, but Xena chooses to stay dead to save the 40,000 souls she condemned so long ago. She continues to travel is spectral form next to Gabrielle who takes up Xena's mantle to fight the good fight. A sad but fitting end for the Warrior Princess </3 :*(
