I'm conflicted about creating your own character and that being the "main character" for the story. I'm not a huge fan of silent protagonists in general because it makes the dialogue rather awkward sometimes. It's a nice touch for some customization, but having a silent character is kind of a bummer, imo.

We'll have to see where it works out, but maybe your player character is more like an observer to everything that goes on in the game, and the other characters play more of a 'main character' role. At the very least, the trailer as well as the Treehouse playthrough makes it pretty clear that there's going to be a lot of story in this game, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

Yeah I'm thinking maybe like South Park Stick of Truth or even Fire Emblem Awakening. The story just kind of took place around the customizable character. Both games worked fine that way, both RPGs, both good stories I thought.

Yeah, I mean.. I'm not really super worried about it, but it was a small concern. I loved games like Chrono Trigger/Cross and they had a mute protag, too. It just depends on the execution.

The color is just more muted it seems compared to the previous reveals. Possibly because of the story or just a change in how they wanted the game to look. In general we never got this close up look at the characters in motion like this so its possible they had a downgrade to make it run better but its also possible they simply are not optimized.

The trailer (dialogue) is terrible and the characters still look worse than Xenosaga Ep. I. Moreover, a fully customizable main character? Well, okay.

The scale is insane. Something like The Order is sharply focused on putting resources towards pure image quality, but this is also impressive in how it puts everything towards the world itself. I do wish they'd improved a bit on the art, though.

Finally got to see the entire trailer. The faces of those girls don't look too great, but the guys are satisfactory for me. Dunban lookalike @ 1:16 looks especially good.

Finally had some time to sit down and watch the footage and trailer for this. Looks really great. Hopefully they can get a little more detail on the models and it will be ace. For the platform this is on and what they are trying to do, I'm really impressed.

I wonder if I will like the game now, not really a fan of Xenoblade Chronicles. Even with gameplay footage, I still have reservations about Xenoblade Chronicles X. I only played the Wii game for 15+ hrs then sold it. And from the looks of it, this seems to be more of the same. It looks impressive so I might try it though.

It looks beautiful. How huge it is and that real time weather change was sweet. Character creation looked great too.

It looks like everything i wanted from Xenoblade Chronicles and much much more. people saying the graphics suck really should wait til we get a better feed and screenshots. The youtube vid is blurry as hell.

It would really depend on what you didn't like about Xenoblade. Much of Xenoblade's style will see a return here, but not all. There may be new elements or different elements that you like more. It's really impossible to say at this point. Some games just don't grab you, Xenoblade may be such a game for you.

The problem is, I didn't hate Xenoblade, but I didn't like it either. I actually have no idea what to say with the few hours I played of it. I guess I can just say it didn't grab me like I thought it would.

Needs better gameplay walkthroughs, the Treehouse one was just grinding at the intro area.

Doesn't look like they fixed the quest system from the first game (they still have magical blobs on the overworld for quest items) and they haven't shown proper gameplay in different (non-rocks-and-grass) areas and how we transition between them. Also, needs more colour. A lot more. It looks like everything is shifted towards the "mud" end of the colour scale.

Oh and yeah, character faces look uncanny (i.e. shit). Kind of reminds me of those Tekken 1 FMVs on PS1. Everything else looks great through.

Still excited for it, just a bit less.

That's extremely reductive and hardly a fair assessment.

Quoting my post from above:
They're supposed to be muted. This is isn't going for a vibrant high-fantasy aesthetic like Xenoblade; they're going for an earthy, grounded sci-fi look. Secondly, the area is called "Primordial Wilderness". The color palette is very subdued here as to convey a, well, primordial atmosphere (there's also all that fog/mist that adds to that atmosphere).

It seems like a sensible way to show off the game for the first game play demo. We'll probably get some different footage later this year in directs (and possibly other sources), and then a full direct focused on the game sometime next year. I'm looking forward to seeing them show off the mecha combat fully, as well as showing more involved game play, but I think this was a good first showing, even if it seems pretty basic for those of us who played the first game.

I would almost suggest retrying it, especially since we got X coming. You know, I put Xenoblade down at about the same time, 15-20 hours. It just didn't grab me. But then about two weeks later I decided to give it another go. Once I learned all the mechanics and how things like gem crafting and skills worked, I loved it. It's now possibly my favorite game of all time. So you never know.

If not, then why not not try again with X? If you really want to like a game, I say give it a go.

And I for one am grateful. Filling in the collectopedia is one of my favore things to do in Xenoblade and it seems like there is a good chance to see a return of it. I loved seeing those little blue orbs in these videos! As for the questing, eh, I have no problem with completing all 480 or so quests, so for me, again I hope they don't change it.

Edit: Though they can surely make the quests less painful. Make it easier to find NPCs, put them on a map or something.

I would love to play Xenoblade again if only I didn't sell it. I don't think I'd buy it again with the ridiculous prices it going for. But I will definitely give X a chance.

First thing I thought when I saw footage was that the game got a lot muddier. Definitely looked better before.

I don't know how many times we have to go through this. The game is identical to when it was first unveiled. You've clearly not seen the Treehouse playthrough.

Can we call this Xenocross instead? Sounds a bit cooler than 'XCX'. :)
Xenoblade Chronicles X is a pretty awful name.

Like, Xenoblade Chronicles was already a bad name (should've just gone with "Xenoblade"), and given the opportunity to fix it with a sequel... they doubled down on the dumb instead.

Story didnt hit me, but i still think the gameplay and world looks quite great. If all i knew about this game was the story trailer i wouldn't be very interested.

I'm thinking 2016 for the US market at the earliest. Sad for me.

Maybe I'm mis-remembering things, but I thought the original plan (maybe announced in a Nintendo Direct, or an investor presentation?) was for this to release late 2014 in Japan, and sometime in 2015 in the US. Since they just gave a "2015" date at E3, a US-focused conference, and they've been demonstrating gameplay in the Treehouse Live segments and for the media, my assumption is that it'd release in the US in 2015 as well.

I mean, it could still be pushed back, but my hope is early-ish 2015 for Japan, and the summer for the US at the latest?

I liked the collectopedia in theory, but they REALLY, REALLY need to tone down/do something about the stuff that only has a max spawn rate of <10% in certain areas (at certain times of day). Made for some stupidly grindy moments running around the maps, and I never finish the colony reconstruction sidequest because of it, even though I got really close.

Also, wonder if the "cross" pronunciation kind of relates to the Xenogears/saga type return to space stuff? Just out of curiosity, would the way the rights play out prevent a full on crossover type occurrence in the game? Not saying I want it to turn full on crossover, but some tiny stuff, say, to tie it to Xenosaga or whatever would be kind of neat.

I like speculation.

X or Cross could be religious symbolism. There were a few references to 'gods' in the trailer- 'beyond the logos'... 'destiny'...

Wikipedia said:
"The Gospel of John identifies the Logos, through which all things are made, as divine (theos),[7] and further identifies Jesus as the incarnate Logos."

"A vessel with which to meet our Lord"

We're going back to Xenogears roots here. Christianity is gonna come under fire.

As a non-Xeno___ fan, after not being super impressed by the Nintendo Direct, I decided to give the Nintendo Treehouse video a go. So here are my impressions, excluding graphics because of how shit the videos all seem to be and .

What I like (aka why I'm interested in this game):
-The open world
-The scifi setting
-Mecha
-Guns in a JRPG
-The story seems accessible for new comers (based on statements at the beginning of the video) and could be really cool.

Mixed:
-Grinding. I don't have as much time to devote to games as I used to, so grinding is a big warning flag for me.
-The multilayer menus give me bad Mass Effect 1 vibes because of how much time I wasted on doing things in the menus instead of actually playing the games.
-Swords being a thing in this setting. You've either got to pull the setting more toward science fantasy or show that swords are insanely awesome for me to completely buy people using them in a future with guns and mecha.

What I Didn't Like:
-The guns look retardedly huge, even accounting for the camera. I thought Elma's guns were a jetpack until I realized she was dual wielding them in combat, which should be impossible, because the things have more mass than her arms.
-The guns still sound pretty weak, although that might be due to them being low level stuff.
-Enemy reactions to being hit in combat are still pretty janky. If you're going to have the player move about and fight in real time, it should feel like the enemies are reacting to what I'm doing instead of them pivoting in random directions and being barely aggressive unless I'm up close (although that might due to difficulty settings).

Right now I feel like Xenoblade Chronicles X would wind up like Mass Effect 1 for me - a game where I kinda like it in spite of its technical and gameplay flaws, but I'd like it way more with better gameplay and way more concise implementation of the RPG elements.
