As a non-Xeno___ fan, after not being super impressed by the Nintendo Direct, I decided to give the Nintendo Treehouse video a go. So here are my impressions, excluding graphics because of how shit the videos all seem to be and .

What I like (aka why I'm interested in this game):
-The open world
-The scifi setting
-Mecha
-Guns in a JRPG
-The story seems accessible for new comers (based on statements at the beginning of the video) and could be really cool.

Mixed:
-Grinding. I don't have as much time to devote to games as I used to, so grinding is a big warning flag for me.
-The multilayer menus give me bad Mass Effect 1 vibes because of how much time I wasted on doing things in the menus instead of actually playing the games.
-Swords being a thing in this setting. You've either got to pull the setting more toward science fantasy or show that swords are insanely awesome for me to completely buy people using them in a future with guns and mecha.

What I Didn't Like:
-The guns look retardedly huge, even accounting for the camera. I thought Elma's guns were a jetpack until I realized she was dual wielding them in combat, which should be impossible, because the things have more mass than her arms.
-The guns still sound pretty weak, although that might be due to them being low level stuff.
-Enemy reactions to being hit in combat are still pretty janky. If you're going to have the player move about and fight in real time, it should feel like the enemies are reacting to what I'm doing instead of them pivoting in random directions and being barely aggressive unless I'm up close (although that might due to difficulty settings).

Right now I feel like Xenoblade Chronicles X would wind up like Mass Effect 1 for me - a game where I kinda like it in spite of its technical and gameplay flaws, but I'd like it way more with better gameplay and way more concise implementation of the RPG elements.

If you want to make sense of the battle system, I suggest playing Xenoblade. Between last years' X trailer and this years, I was able to figure out exactly what was going on since I bought Xeno last month.

I watched the live demo for Gamestop. It looks so severely graphically downgraded from the reveal. What happened?
Lol wait for more footage.

Anyways, if you played Xenoblade, there are reasons they are conservative with the graphics (ex. huge cutscenes).

Will other planets be involved you think? Since they crash land on an alien planet, the aliens
that blew up Earth
are probably not from there, so.

I like speculation.

X or Cross could be religious symbolism. There were a few references to 'gods' in the trailer- 'beyond the logos'... 'destiny'...

"A vessel with which to meet our Lord"

We're going back to Xenogears roots here. Christianity is gonna come under fire.

I mean... it's a Xeno game. I feel like overt religious symbolism and random references to figures, themes and stories in Christianity / Judaism / Gnosticism are a given, since that was the case not only for Xenogears but also Xenosaga and Xenoblade. The only question is how crazy it will get - I actually thought it was a bit "toned down" in Xenoblade, and the story there ended up being tighter and more cohesive than it was in Xenosaga (Xenosaga 3 ending spoiler:
I'll still never get over the silliness of seeing a flying Mary Magdalene
.)

I guess if they have a character creator already it's too late for them to go back and tweak some of the faces.

Awww. I wish they could have maybe done a bit more work on those. I mean don't get me wrong it's still my most anticipated game of all time but I just need perfection.

Possibly. If it's anything like Xenoblade it's going to be a long game, some 50 hours or so. Who knows where the story will end up?

Lol why do people think it was downgraded? I assume the major gripe is with the faces? Look at the Shulk lookalike at the end of the first trailer! And it's not like Xenoblade Chronicles was a graphical marvel either... The game looks just as good as it always has.

this definitely feels like some kind of reimagining of the xenoverse. being forced to abandon earth and search for a new home, "a vessel with which to meet our lord has come to me"...all of this fits the old mythology rather nicely. i think the details will obviously differ with maybe some of the xenoblade worldview mixed in.

All of this is really intriguing for an old xeno-fanboy like me.... :)
I actually don't think the story is related to Xenoblade itself. I think they just chose that name because it has similar gameplay and easier to market (already a Xenoblade brand). Just a guess, anyways. I saw nothing in the story trailer that made me think "Oh, this will be in Xenoblade's world" EXCEPT the Nopon, but... Hmm. I dunno, the Nopon is really the only thing making me want to link the stories at all.
I haven't had a chance to watch the streams and I'm just on my phone so my full thoughts will come later.

Bit basically here's what I think this is. Every other Xeno game has had to have a new name because once they found a new home for Monolith Soft, they no longer really retained the rights to the previous franchises. Gears had one game, then that got scrapped and they went to Saga. Planned 6 games, only got 3, then went to Nintendo and made Monado, which became Xenoblade Chronicles. They aren't leaving Nintendo, so the Xenoblade name is here to stay. But this isn't a sequel, so it's not Xenoblade 2. This isn't he Xenoblade universe though, so it would make perfect sense to retain the name, to keep people familiar with what they already know, it makes sense. Also remember, its been stated in interviews before that this game was meant as a test, more of an experiment for Monolith Soft to mess around with for their first Wii game. And while it turned out a huge success, I honestly don't think they had plans for expanding on THIS game's story/characters/world/etc. This was them getting their feet wet, and more importantly, wasn't even a "real" Xeno game in the same sense that Gears and Saga were. Now that b they've been given the chance to make a new game, its back to Takahashi and his great mind for telling stories.

Legally, as we all know, this can't be a direct game to Gears or Saga. Those have always been Takahashi's babies, his vision, his dreams. And when given the opportunity, he will always go back to whatever bit of those game's mythos/universe/stories that he can get away with. But at the same time you can't ignore certain elements that got you where you are today. Xenoblade. But I can almost assure you that this game will be more reminiscent of Gears and Saga than Blade (other than the battle system and environments, of course).

And with the story details that we now know....this is easily, EASILY a re-imagining of Episode I.

That trailer deflated my hype by 500% :/

I don't know why they decided to have a trailer like this. The story's going to suck. That's pretty much inevitable. Not expecting anything from the characters either (and lol @ those faces).

Last year's trailer did it right.

I was actually so excited to finally see a story trailer. I knew the game would have a story (I mean, come on, it's Takahashi), but still, we hadn't seen much at all regarding a story in the year since it was revealed. The story trailer made me super hyped (and I don't even mind the faces - they are fine). Why is the story going to suck? Did you not enjoy the previous Xeno games storylines? I mean, that's fine if you didn't. Personally, they are some of my favorite stories in gaming (especially Xenogears).

I bet this cut-scene looks better in the day or at sunset.

When I would play Xenoblade, I would set the time of day to sunset for all the big cutscenes, lol. Always makes the cutscenes look 10x better!

oh I can't freaking wait. Silly as it sounds, Xenogears and Xenosaga both got me interested in the origins of religions and things like that (Xenosaga also inspired me to spend like, a week learning about Nietzsche. I'm weird, I guess.)

God. I can't wait.

Ditto. Hallmarks of a great story.

Xenoblade's story was good.

Persona 3 did this for me.

But yeah, this is the first time in a while I've been excited about a game.

Xenosaga and Blade had good stories. Story's not going to suck unless you don't like Xeno stories or don't like sci-fi anime terms.

Any word or confirmation of multiplayer?! Man, I just remember all of the dialogue boxes in the original trailer

I haven't heard anything but the main character being something of your own creation strikes me as an obvious multiplayer hook.

I think the game looks great (not best ever or anything like that) and am really excited for another Xenoblade game, especially going back to Gears/Saga style story (though I liked the original Xenoblade's premise quite a bit).

Next year is going to be pretty incredible for games.

Finally watched the Treehouse demonstration. It has a decent Sci-Fi premise to kick things off and I like how big the areas seem to be, hopefully a large portion of the city can be explored, if not pretty much all of it. Combat flows pretty smoothly.

Character creation seems decent enough. I expect any character to come out pretty "anime" but from what I read of the options in the short time they spent on it, I might be able to manage something acceptable, so I'm ok with it.

I haven't looked over Xenogears / saga lore for a while, but was "Episode I" supposed to cover the original exodus from Earth to outer space? I guess that'd make sense since apparently the Earth is completely destroyed here and everyone has to leave on arks, etc.

During the Treehouse livestream one of the staff members noted that there'd be references to things not only in Xenoblade but also to things "even further back" than the Wii game, dating to "the series' origins" that fans of the series would appreciate - I'm assuming he's referring to Xenogears / saga (he seemed to be treating Xeno- as one long series spanning the PS1/PS2 to the Wii).

Humm, not sure what happened, but I feel like Xenoblade X has went from being a sister of Skyrim to a brother of Xenosaga. Which both are great things :P

One thing I don't understand...

Where's the rage from the delay to 2015?

Without even getting a name for it the last time they showed it off, it was really obvious it wouldn't hit this year. After seeing the game today as amazing as it looks, you can clearly see from the demo just what needs to be worked on within the next 8-10 months(assuming it's early next year). Monolith Soft is one of those companies that actually seem to care about getting their game out there and not sit on it for 6-8 years like others, but even they can't work miracles in a short time frame. It was known from the start this game would be massive in scale and would require a lot of work, just about any other company though and this would still be 2+ years out.

I've been putting people who predicted a 2014 release onto my "crazy as fuck" list

it was never gonna happen.

I was one of the people saying 2015. I actually was surprised how many people, even very recently, thought this would be 2014. They would get quite annoyed if you said differently. I mean come on, the game didn't even have a title until today.

Heres the translated episode summary from Perfect Works:

Episode I

Era of Interplanetary War

15,000 years before the story, humankind set out from earth and discovered a hospitable planet in the Archer constellation M24. It became known here after as "Neo-Jerusalem" and once again, humans headed for the abyss of space. As a result, humanity enlarged the circle of living things to encompass almost the entire galaxy approximately 10,000 years ago...

At the same time, the interplanetary war which had broken out intensified. The universe became the stage for the devastation caused by the winds of war.

The Deus System which appears in the story was developed in this era but besides this phenomenon, this episode remains shrouded in mystery.

Note how in Gears lore, it was called "Neo-Jerusalem". In Saga, they had to change the name and here is what the descriptions say about some cities in Saga:

Lost Jerusalem

Lost Jerusalem was the name given to Earth in T.C. 0016. After the Immigrant Fleet left Lost Jerusalem, the planet suddenly vanished. Since the disappearance of Lost Jerusalem, the Galaxy Federation has moved its capital four times. The Ormus cult considers Lost Jerusalem to be a holy place, due to its history with the Zohar. There have been dozens of attempts to discover the ancient human capital. In the Proto Merkabah superfacility, there is a holographic starmap; chaos comments on a large "uncharted" hole where Lost Jerusalem was supposedly located.

A trailer for Episode III shows Shion finding herself on a portion of Lost Jerusalem's land in a ruined temple area. This portion is in fact Rennes-le-Château, which has been separated from Lost Jerusalem. At this time, Lost Jerusalem is revealed as the Planet Earth. Which is the Floating Landmass during game play

At the end of Episode III, after the credits, KOS-MOS' body is seen drifting towards the planet. This is where the series comes to a closure. Supposedly, the planet that KOS-MOS drifts to is Lost Jerusalem. And that Humanity had to start another Human Race and civilization on Lost Jerusalem.

Fifth Jerusalem
Fifth Jerusalem is the current capital planet of the Galaxy Federation, and seat of the central legislative judicial, and administrative agencies. The headquarters of the S.O.C.E. is also located here. As the name suggests, it is the fifth capital of the Galaxy Federation after Lost Jerusalem. Fifth Jerusalem also encompasses a large administrative space-station in orbit tethered to the planet by a large-scall space elevator. The station serves as a spaceport and as an administration center.

This is also another Gears timeline someone put together, which gives a more detailed look into detailed events and periods, and since we MIGHT have seen a picture of a certain artifact in one of those screens, this timeline may be important to get an idea of how SOME things may shape up:

History Timeline

2001 A.D. A strange, artificial object is discovered buried beneath the earth's surface. This object is dubbed MAM (Magnetic Abnormal Matter). Researchers begin a detailed investigation into the nature of MAM.

2510 A.D./ 0 T.C. Mankind discovers the universe of the Wave Existence using MAM. The Space Emigration Project commences, organized by the newly established National Institute. A new era and year numbering system is instated, T.C. or Transcend Christ.

16 T.C. Possibly due to a sudden change in Earth's environment, an emigrant fleet abandons Earth to colonize space. No longer accessible, Earth is now known as Lost Jerusalem.

294 T.C. The emigrant fleet discovers a inhabitable planet in the M24 Sagittarius star cluster. The planet is christened "Neo Jerusalem."

295 T.C. The Star Cluster Federation is inaugurated, with Neo Jerusalem as its principal planet. The emigrant government and the National Institute consolidate and reorganize. A president is elected. Neo Jerusalem becomes a new base from which mankind explores space.

4743 T.C. Lost since the emigration from Lost Jerusalem, MAM is rediscovered on board a museum ship that is part of a fleet belonging to an ancient religious sect.

4744 T.C. Research on MAM resumes.

4750 T.C. Through the research of MAM, researches discover the Theory of Phenomenon Phase Shift.

4751 T.C. Researchers compete to realize Phenomenon Phase Shift, using MAM as its core. This is the beginning of Project Zohar.

4752 T.C. Regional conflict intensifies.

4765 T.C. An accident during work on Project Zohar causes the planet on which it was being conducted to be destroyed. MAM was recovered drifting in space.

4766 T.C. Project Zohar is nearing completion as researchers work on the Kadamony Control System. The interstellar war is reaching its climax. The Deus Weapon system is developed.

4767 T.C. On a satellite orbiting colony planet Miktam 04 Beta, MAM, now also known as the Zohar, is installed as Deus's main power source. Three months later experiments on the Deus System causes it to go out of control, and it invades the nearby planet, resulting in unnumbered casualties. The military manages to subdue Deus and put it in a state of suspended animation. Deus is dismantled, and the Interstellar Space Cruiser Eldridge is requisitioned to transport Deus to another planet, along with 120 million workers, survivors, and colonists.

4767 T.C. Despite its state of suspended animation, Deus activates during its transfer, and using the Zohar, hacks into Eldridge's mainframe, also known as artificial intelligence Raziel. Captain of the Eldridge, Shigeyoshi Inoue, calls for a complete evacuation, but Deus destroys the evacuation pods using Eldridge's weapons. Captain Inoue initiates Eldridge's self destruct system. The Eldridge breaks apart and crashes into a nearby planet. The part of the Eldridge containing Deus and the Zohar crashes into an ocean, but Kadomony lands separately on the coast.

0000 N.E. Kadomony's central system, Persona, uses program Elhaym, and starts System HAWWA. The planet's first intelligent beings are created: Cain and the Gazel Ministry, and Elhaym and Miang as supervisors. Abel, the sole survivor of the Eldridge's crash, is discovered. Cain uses Kadomony to create normal human beings to populate the planet. A new era (N.E.) begins.

0010 N.E. The world's population begin to worship Cain as a god. Abel rebels against the worship of Cain. Cain comes to think of Abel as a hinderance.

0011 N.E. Cain plans to eradicate Abel. Elhaym tries to protect Abel, but both are killed by Cain. Miang becomes the sole supervisor.

6053-6084 N.E. Zeboim, nanotechnology, and the contact's second incarnation.

9088-9701 N.E. Solaris, Shevat, Nisan, and the contact's third incarnation.

9715-9998 N.E. Ignas War.

9999-???? N.E. The game's (Xenogears Episode V) events.

Just finished watching the Treehouse presentation. What's with this game? They mention that it is a spiritual successor. Was this originally designed as a 3rd Person Turned Based Shooter MMO set in the Xenoblade world? This is not at all what I was expecting. - Really disappointed with what they have shown this e3.

I reckon it's localisation time.

The guys at the Treehouse were playing a build with menus and the opening cutscene and everything. Seemed pretty close to finished minus translation, tweaks, debug and optimisation.

But yeah, deep down I knew it wasn't going to be 2014. Still, RAGE!

Not sure what you were expecting, but it looks like an evolution of Xenoblade's combat to me. I take it you haven't played that game?
