Cool, I saw the start of the trailer and it looked pretty awesome but then decided to turn it off in case there are spoilers for Chronicles.

Did Xenoblade have nothing to do with Gears/Saga? Just, maybe it had certain characters or moments that paid homage to things that happened in, or characters in, Gears/Saga? I know it was supposed to be called Monado: Beginning of the World.

I just saw this screencap but haven't seen it mentioned in the thread yet.

That's the Pioneer plaque.

I did see that in one of the live-plays! That's one of the things that gave me the feeling of that 1970s attitude about space (aside from the visual style being being desaturated), that optimistm about space and technology and man's capabilities to use technology to explore space and build better societies, as well as the pondering about his place in the universe.

Nope. Nothing in Blade related to any other Xeno game.

Eh, there's some common story tropes that Xenoblade shared with the previous games, but they really had nothing to do with each other.

I do feel like (Xenoblade and Xenosaga 3 spoilers)
Fiora is kind of a homage to KOS-MOS, though. They had very similar designs after her re-reveal (and especially one of Fiora's armors in particular). Plus, Fiora had that whole thing about having Lady Meyneth's soul inside her body just like KOS-MOS did in Xenosaga. And their eyes both changed colors when the other soul was talking or taking over or whatever.

From the trailer I don't like the character designs are much as Xenogears and Saga. Though the modeling and art style (the other two games are more colorful) might be putting down my opinion a bit.

Yeah I feel the same about the art direction... personally prefer style of the original Xenoblade as well.

Hope there's this kind of thing to Xeno X...

Definitely agree. I want lots of "unique" monsters to show up out of nowhere and then hear a very awesome battle theme to accompany them. Part of the reason why I wanted to hunt down every unique monster in an area (that was within my level range) was for the You Will Know Our Names song, lol. The added affinity coins and loot was just a bonus!

Awesome! Good job! :)

Melia is pretty damn OP in the game, honestly. Summon Bolt -> Copy -> Summon Flame -> Use it -> Summon whatever -> use it. When Summon Bolt's recharge is back up, summon it and unleash a crazy devastating attack (since you had 3 bolts up). Copy Bolt again, use it. Repeat the process. And yeah, her self-topple stuff is invaluable. She's so fun to use, imo. It's also nice to keep up a Summon Aero/Wind on some harder bosses because it raises the agility of your party members (more evades). The only problem is sometimes when you unleash those huge ether bolt attacks, she takes aggro from the enemy, but it's not too much of an issue with capped Agility on everyone.

On my first time playing the game, I almost never used Riki. It wasn't until my second playthrough that I started to see just how good Riki was. He's hilarious in battle, too. lol
Added bonus of using Melia is that you can stand farther back so the other characters' voices are quieter.

I'm starting tomorrow! I'll have none of that new game plus though. No leveling? Takes away my motivation to play. They really need to take notice of how the Tales of series does new game plus for XenobladeX.

Edit: Err what I mean is you have no option to reset levels.

Gonna guess the buff mustache dude is the next in line for the jerkass Colonel of the Xeno series. Hopefully a worthy successor of Vanderkam and Vangarre combined.

I love this character so much.

I just watched the Treehouse videos on my TV and wow... such a different experience than seeing it on a computer monitor. My GOD I'm STILL just as freaking hyped for this game as I was when it was first announced.

lol true. I bet you there will be an option in Xenoblade X to turn off the voices in combat. I think they realize some people don't enjoy them. I didn't mind them myself. I loved the post-combat musings from the characters. Yet another good reason to switch out your party all the time - you can hear so many different sayings by doing that. There's a particularly funny one with Shulk, Melia, and Seven where they make fun of Shulk for not understanding women (forget what exactly it said).

I really agree. I wish Xenoblade's New Game Plus let you bring over your gear and arts progress, but reset your level back to 1. Or just given you the option to reset levels or not. OR scaled up enemies based on your level. When I replayed Xenoblade last year, I didn't use New Game Plus because I still wanted at least somewhat of a challenge in battles. I'm not sure how much I'd enjoy one-shotting everything.

I love this character so much.

What a scary picture...

I worked out the plot twist with
Dickson
in Xenoblade on my first playthrough.

If you put him into your party after Xord's battle, you can see Dickson has the 100% unbeatable gem equipped.

What? Are you serious? I love when games drop little gameplay hints that actually relate back to the story.

I feel like replaying the game now and going for those skill trees/arts that I missed.

I think the aim of this is that you can finish the game without leveling up much, but there are monsters lurking even at the beginning that are practically overleveled. So with retained character levels you can actually fight them straight on without grinding again if you ever skipped them on 1st try. In Colony 9 there are a good number of enemies above lvl70, and Gaur Plains have monsters leveled as high as lvl90.

In my case though, I beat up all the unique monsters including the "super 5" on my first try. :p

Everyone in this thread is restarting Xenoblade now.

Meanwhile, I'm sitting in the corner after finally buying Xenogears. It'll probably be a few weeks before I start playing, though

The funny thing about that moment is that when your playing you know something is going to happen once you hit that area. Yet everyone seems to go for it anyway I think. :)

I wasn't...

I was more like: "Oh hey, that looks nice, it's like an ancient civilization look they were going for here where they perform---- HOLY FLYING FIDDLE FUCK!!!!"

I was like 50 levels higher than it though because I missed the quest/area the first time round, kicked its ass, drank a beer.

DAMN
You're in for a crazy, awesome ride.

Sit back enjoy the ride.

I just picked it up yesterday for the first time. Glad to hear it still holds up. Can't wait to start it.

you've probably played 2% of what the game's going to offer

you're in for a long, awesome ride, so envious!

also, cannot stop watching the Treehouse demo. My hype level is through the roof

Yup, I stopped right at the part when
the Mechon invade the city
, so I have a feeling it's really about to start heating up. I didn't expect the game to be this good, but now it's on top of my backlog list. Doubt I'll really play anything else until I'm done.

Hahaha...I really never expected that one the 1st time it happened. I almost jumped to the pits due to panic lol. Good thing I managed to escape before it kicked my underleveled ass.

After that happened I became more aware during my exploration.

Anyway, I can make an LTTP thread since I'm LTTP. I could start in July-late June(I'm currently on my finals until the 26th) if you guys are up for it.

Decided I needed to go back to Xenoblade before this comes out, and finally finish it off. I think I still have like 50 hours to go though. Characters are all at level 49, and I'm at
Sword Valley
right now. Getting a bunch of exp from these enemies, so I think I may stick around a while to grind up and make the next bosses easier for me. Though I already spent a while grinding in
Valak Mountain
, because damn
Mumkhar
was such a pain in the ass :(

You're at the halfway point bro. Well, just over.

lol

I've been saying this earlier on in this thread when people disagreed. This is gonna be very Saga and Gears.

And I can't fucking wait lol
I don't care if people think complex/convoluted stories are pretentious or wannabe intelligent or whatever, I love it when a lot of crazy shit is going down. As long as questions get answered in the end, of course.

Somebody make a LTTP thread where we all play simultaneously

well this is the kind of stuff I love about Japanese Sci-Fi stories so cannot wait to see the mystery unfold.

So glad Nintendo has Monolith Soft

WiiU will not have Destiny hype but Xenoblade X is already pulling off a story that I cannot wait to dive into. That trailer had something like that I most of us glossed over it so glad GAF exists

lol can't wait!

Good idea. I might start replaying this game over the weekend (as in new game, not new game +).

Definitely

Most JRPG and anime plots I've seen lack the subtleties and character depth of many of the western shows I've seen, but nobody can come up with crazier, more insanely twisty batshit insane stories than those mad Japanese can

LOVE IT

e: generalizing like a mofo, don't take this to heart

That's not a bad assessment actually. There are always exceptions but normally Japanese stories excel in their plot and Western stories in their characters.
I think a good comparison would be Death Note vs Breaking Bad. Breaking Bad has better character development and Death Note has the more intricate and cerebral plot going on, both are still very good in the other departments ofc.
But then you also have JPN games like NieR where characters take precedence over plot.

I think the Xeno games nail both aspects. They are both very rich in their character development and plot structure.

A typical anime episode costs around $100,000 per episode.

Breaking Bad's budget is reportedly $3,000,000 per ep.

Two entirely different formats with entirely different audiences and development time.

Regarding subtlety, yes, anime in general is very in your face compared to television live-action drama. But it's oversimplifying to characterise it as 'Western' vs 'Japanese'. If you look at a Japanese drama (Departures, Like Father Like Son) and compare it to a 'Western' drama the logic falls apart.

EDIT: sorry a bit over-zealous, changing my tone now!

Can someone please capture the eshop footage. It's not up in Australia :/ and the eshop footage is of a higher quality than the Youtube and IGN stuff.

The game still looks great, but you can clearly see that the colors in the 2013 trailers were brighter and popped out, and everything was sharper. The E3 demo looked washed out. I hope it was just the stream, but if it is not, then they should fix it.
