So a little mini-rant here:
I've been bored and watching (well skipping forward) through some of the reaction vids to the Nintendo E3 Digital showing, mainly to see how Nintendo fans reacted to games like XBC:X and Bayonetta. It kills me that the reactions range basically from "wait is this METROID?!... oh this is that X game" to just complete apathy. Some edited videos don't even include their reactions to XBC:X.
True, Nintendo fans are a niche market, and the JRPG market is perhaps even more niche and the two don't necessarily intersect and yeah I get that the ones doing these react videos are pretty much looking for Mario/Metroid/Zelda. Also, Nintendo really is partly to blame since they fucked up majorly with the first XB with zero promotion, the whole Operation Rainfall mess, and the limited retail distribution. That being said, you'd think that at least some of the positive press such as the game being hailed as the best JRPG of last gen would start to permeate through the Nintendo fanbase and some would give it a shot or the benefit of the doubt, plus Nintendo seems to be actively promoting XBC:X, unlike the first one.
I guess what I'm trying to say, is that I wish some of these really, really dedicated hardcore Nintendo fans would try to expand their horizons, especially when Nintendo themselves are making a concerted effort to do so. We have sequels to arguably the best JRPG and straight actioner of last generation, and a lot of Nintendo fans are "meh" to it (granted Bayo 1 never hit Nintendo's systems so more understandable). Meanwhile, announcements of
previously leaked playable characters in a known game can send fanboys/fangirls into screaming fits.
I'd really love to see these games do better as they totally deserve it, and I feel like if a lot of cloistered Nintendo fans just gave them a chance and embraced them like they do with anything Mario, they'd be surprised.
