Xenoblade X Eurogamer Preview: Maybe 2015's Most Impressive Open World

You're absolutely right. Well it's a nice recap, I guess.

Also this shows that I will not get easily bored with Mira, because I saw tons of videos and I'm still amazed.
As long as you haven't been watching any import let's plays then you're going to be constantly blown away. The world is absolutely huge and gorgeous.

There's two different parts to online.
There's a passive part where you can trade items and complete Faction goals through normal play.
There's also an online quest mode where four people can team up and fight monsters for loot.
As far as I know, you can play with anyone that's online at the time.

Just be warned that this game is the JRPG of all JRPGs. There's a lot that you have to keep track of and a lot that is going on at all times.

That's good to hear. I may get to relieve my PSO days once again! Hopefully the gamepad makes managing all the systems easier. XBC's long menu screen load times made managing systems a chore (looking at you, gem crafting).

More complaints about gated story missions.

I think that'll be a sticking point in reviews. In Xeno Wii you could choose whether you wanted to do a ton of exploring. grinding, quest completing, etc, or if you just wanted to do a bit of grinding and complete story missions. Xeno X is basically saying, "This game is about exploration. You have to play it this way." Especially when it comes to stuff like needing to explore a certain percentage of the map.
Reviewers will loathe that sort of thing because they're literally programmed by design to want to crunch through a game as quickly as possible.

So while Joe Average Consumer might not mind dicking around with some fetch / "kill these things" quests and to leisurely take their time being a completist, reviewers won't want any part of that. Once they've seen one or two of those quests they'll want to move forward and they'll be given the Dennis Nedry "uh uh uh, you didn't say the magic word" and told to go fetch more stuff and kill more things.

Progress gating is virtually guaranteed to drop a Metacritic score by about 10 points before you even factor in all of the other pain points surrounding presentation and storyline... even if progress gating may NOT be an issue for the typical fan that buys this game. Because they're not under a time crunch.

Oooh voice actor spoilers. Footage doesn't seem to be late game, just shows off an Affinity quest with a new party member.

Dude with the glasses
H.B
is voiced by
Wesker's
actor from
Resident Evil, D. C. Douglas

Yeah, I believe glasses guy is one of the free DLC characters in the western release so it must be a quest with him involved. Didn't see the whole video to avoid spoilers, but listened for a second. Man, that voice... So weird yet it fits to me.

Gonna get a Wii U for this.

Is the 8GB version enough for retail games or should i go for the 32GB version?

Get the 32 GB, so you can download the data packs (10 GB, speed up the loading times and reduce pop-up) directly on it.

The thing with Riki is you were supposed to think he was this joke character comic relief and he was actually a father who has lived a long life and knows his shit, he just doesn't show his hand very often.

Also he could be real useful in battle, especially against UMs.

Dragging up this quote because i had a thought. Riki is how you do a character like Jar Jar Binks *right,* the goofy inhuman mascot who makes a real contribution to the team and who has a life and a world that isn't a joke, while still remaining funny.

Okay that sounds good. Price difference is quite large (50-100€) though.
Depending on the price difference, it might be easier to get an 8gb and a USB stick.
You can attach a USB stick to the Wii U?

10 points sounds a bit extreme.

My mind will be blown if both this and Splatoon end up rating lower than Mario Maker.

Gamexplain will be streaming the game for 3 hours tomorrow at 11 est if you crazy folks wanna spoil more of the environments for yourselves lol.

I spoiled myself a bit when the game launched in Japan by watching a few Twitch streams. Luckily most of that memory has faded away, and what's left is a random blend of gratuitous eye candy.

Still going in kind of fresh.

Splatoon now vs Splatoon when it released are not the same game. The game has way more content now that would push its score up quite a bit. I see this game getting low 80s. Still really good. And imo playing off the best parts of XBC being the combat system and exploring the world.

What does it say, I'm blocking images. I assume it's playtime. Yes, I don't even want to look at the menus. Blackout level: Master.

Mario Maker didn't even launch with checkpoints. CHECKPOINTS! Gah.

Super Mario Maker is a stupidly good game. If Xenoblade rates lower than it, then I wouldn't be surprised at all. Mario Maker is amazing.

I'm just saying it's a $60 level editor, using mostly assets from old games. I can see how it's really fun, but the innovation of Splatoon and the ambition of Xenoblade really deserve better imo, unless Xenoblade has some huge issues I haven't read about yet. Eh, wouldn't be the first time I've disagreed with reviews by a long shot.

Over 70 hours played. 32% completion.

Its his playtime vs current completion percentage:

Playtime: 70h 16m

Completion:
36%

It's just showing numbers, after 70 hours, 16 minutes and 37 seconds he only completed 32.91% of the game.

Probably they didn't intend to have checkpoints but ended up adding them by popular demand. For one SMB3 didn't have them.

It says that the game played the game for 70 hours and only did around 32% completion. What does that mean? Who the hell knows. My questions:

1. How is percentage calculated? Monsters fought, land discovery, mission completions?

2. What is the minimum percentage needed to do enough to go through the story and required side missions?

I agree with everything in this post. Mario Maker is fantastic, but it's not at the same quality to me as X and Splatoon this year.

For 1, I think that's pretty much what's calculated into it, and maybe completion of the item encyclopedia, like the first Xenoblade.

2. I don't know about minimum, but some story missions require a certain percentage of current continent explored (continent exploration also has a separate % bar), and also to finish specific Kizuna quests. I assume its different for each story mission.

Not to note the comparison is kind of silly? Two different games.

Yeah, I think there's a want for Xenoblade to rate highly. Reviews are formed with other people's opinions too, so it's pointless to anticipate them as some sort of approval.

Regardless, Mario Maker is my favourite game this year.

Paid $80 for Mario Maker. Zero regrets. You get hundreds of amazing levels and the joy of using one of the most inuitive level editors in a modern game. Point on point at launch Mario Maker was way better than Splatoon. Like stupidly so. Splatoon launched with 5 maps and a single mode available. People can't seriously underplay how problematic that is especially for reviewers that have to review the product for day one purchases. I know everyone loves Splatoon but the way they chose to roll out content affected the reviews. Its reality.

People should really look at Mario Maker as a whole and see how much of a triumph it is. If XBX is not better than the original, I dont see why ambition should boost the score as opposed to actual quality.

Well, I've heard XBX improves on multiple elements of the original, such as combat and exploration (I see now that you pointed those out in an earlier post). We'll see how it all comes together when it releases.

I'm not saying you should regret buying Mario Maker, but I wouldn't touch it until it drops to $15 bucks or so. The fact that they're "different games" doesn't really mean anything to me. I'm not saying MM should be a big open world game or have online co-op missions and sidequests like Xenoblade. Just that I have major qualms with the game personally and it surprises me how high it rated. Especially with several Wii U games getting hit critically this gen for being derivative.

I've already stated my thoughts on Splatoon reviews in other threads.
