Xenoblade X Eurogamer Preview: Maybe 2015's Most Impressive Open World

I'm also interested in this, so I asked around and...

Thanks for asking!

The closer to the release this gets, the more good things I hear and see about it. I wasn't sure what to think before, but I'm getting hyped now. I am downloading the data packs as we speak. Visually speaking, the game looks really impressive for a WiiU game.

Waiting till black Friday before I jump so I can get splatoon and smash with the WiiU. Was going to sell them....might just keep them now with the great support both games have....plus cloud in smash pushed me over lol

This is not clear. Can I plug a headset in the Wii U GamePad's audio jack, WITHOUT entering Off-TV mode, in order to use it as a TV headset replacement?

Yeah I'd like to know this too. Couldn't do it in WWHD.

If not I guess my family's gonna be hearing a lot about the key we've lost.

The things that's stuck out to me most about this game continually, from the first teasers to the last, is that the world is insane in scope, and it is breathtakingly beautiful. I can't wait for it to get here.

The few mixed impressions I saw weren't as concerning as the Japanese reviews on Amazon Japan. Xenoblade has a nice solid 4.5/5 overall rating which reflects my own thoughts, but X had I believe only a 3/5 rating when I checked a few months ago. It seems to have risen to a 3.5/5 as of now. Not a terrible consensus but it has dampened my enthusiasm a little.

I always believe Monolith will build a fantastic world. Xenoblade already proved it. The world in Xenoblade is just filled with surprise and variation. No other open world games can provide such variety landscape in a single game and at the same time put surprise every where. Compare to Xenoblade, Skyrim's word is just not as intresting.

However, I'm very worried about the quests in Xenoblade X. The biggest let down in the original Xenoblade is the quests. After play the game 3 times, I can say the side quests in Xenoblade are totally forgettable, most of them are fetch quests which are boring as hell. Even for those complex side quest, for example, the quest let you investigate an underground drug dealer, the game just use simple dialogs to tell you what happen. Compare with exciting cutscene and representation in the main story, this is such a let down and dose not let you feel accomplisment.

So are there any narrative ties to Xenoblade? I never played it, I kind of want to pick this up, but it's it's a direct sequel I'll probably skip it for now.

This has always been my most anticipated game of the year and as we inch closer and closer and start to hear more and more impressions, the excitement's starting to burn again. This really is the perfect December game.

It's refreshing to hear how glowing Eurogamer's impressions are considering how cynical some of the reactions were when the game size was revealed. This truly does seem like the kind of world you can just get lost in.

Glad to see people finally paying attention to what actually matters in this game.

Usually it takes until the game has come out and someone makes a thread praising the game outside of the OT for gaf to even start changing their minds.

And yeah, I can definitely believe this is the best open world this year, on level design alone...

The guy who answered you is a liar (or just misunderstood your question) unless they fixed that for the North American version. It was a huge complaint I had with the Japanese version at launch. I admit I haven't played it with the latest patch, but I can check later this weekend.

I ended up having to move my Wii U to hook up with my computer monitor so I could get audio via the headphone jack on my monitor. Most of the time I played the game was after my toddler son had gone to bed, so using the nearby TV was a no-go for me.

Yeah I'd like to know this too. Couldn't do it in WWHD.

Was the same situation as Wind Waker HD, at least in the Japanese release. Very unfortunate.

It also REALLY sucks because playing solely on the Gamepad is not only very difficult due to the text size, but there's no way to access the world map while displaying the main gameplay on the Gamepad. This is not only frustrating for tracking quests, but it also means you have no way to fast travel, leading to a really crippled gameplay experience if you plan on taking the Gamepad with you into bed or something.

This could very well have been fixed in the North American version/a later patch. I haven't played the game since The Witcher 3 came out.

Well, my excitement is finally growing again. I trust Eurogamer. But I'm still cautious...

I'm lol'ing at those who were listening to some random dudes saying the game wasn't that good based on the Japanese impressions, therefore getting "un-hyped" for X.

The impressions from GameXplain (more reliable AFAIC than random nobodies) were glowing.

It wasn't their opinions that had me and others upset, it was the mere facts that they revealed. Stuff like a 'create-a-character' as the lead, certain grinding issues that the original didn't have etc. If you know you don't like that kind of thing in other RPGs then it's obviously going to affect your excitement for the game.

I wasn't reading whether other people liked it or not, I was reading what the game was and deciding if it sounded up my alley. And it sounded like it was moving away from what I liked about the first. Whatever, if it has massive worlds, I'm always down.

EDIT: Wait, is Eurogamer saying that you don't get the Mech for almost 40 hours?!? Holy SHIT that is awesome! Fuck yeah! Hype through the roof! I was worried you'd get it early and it would make the world small, but as it is it sounds like you explore everything the long way on foot and then will see it again from a different size perspective in the mech. Sounds fucking PERFECT.

Nothing about the open world of Xenoblade X impressed me. Actually, as someone who isn't even a Bethesda fan, I find Fallout 4's open world better designed. It's not perfect, but at least there are dungeons to visit, locations to explore and scavenge. Maybe that's just me though.

In short, I don't understand some of these previews. I'd be very disappointed personally if I were to go into this game expecting some of the things these previews are praising the game for.

Then again, I feel like some people, especially those who would take the word of websites over importers that actually played the game and were honest in their findings, would enjoy it regardless. Shrug.

The battle system being good is what I consider the game's strongest point and something that does make the game enjoyable to a certain extent, it's just that the weak story (create-a-character that just nods his or her way through story events) and weak soundtrack with empty open world design make it overall a disappointment.

Why would an importer's review be inherently more honest than a reviewer on a website?^^

I don't think Nintendo shills for reviews lol

I know you've played through the game and have a lot of experience with it, but I don't think this part is fair if it's implying that people with review copies are somehow being dishonest about their experience with the game.

When a preview states that Xenoblade X's open world design is perhaps the most impressive of 2015, a year consisting of The Witcher 3 and Fallout 4, both of which having vastly superior open world design, then I question their honesty.

Not saying that Nintendo are shilling here, I'm just questioning how it's possible to come to that conclusion when there are far better examples already released and already highly praised by these sites.

I think "honest" is not the right word to use about reviews/impressions. It's practically a matter of personal taste. What Kyoufu hated somebody else can enjoy without this being a contradiction.

And this is valid also for the ones who played the import version. As long as a game is not unfinished or has bugs or very poor implementation of its concepts there is no unique truth and it's more about personal preferences. Don't try to impose your perception as the unique truth.

How it's possible? Seriously?

Nope. No one can like what I don't like. It's the law.

Amusingly, gamexplain, who actually imported the Japanese release was extremely positive in their recent preview. So I'm kinda curious, are they lying? Or maybe, just a slight possibility, it's a mere difference of opinion?

Nice straw man there, but the only detractors of the game aren't "random nobodies". Several sites have posted import impressions and the 8-4 Play podcast has talked about it extensively, and those have all been middling.

It's nice to pigeonhole everyone you disagree with and cherry pick opinions you agree with though.
Considering he equated criticizing the Wii U to insulting someone's mother, are you surprised?

What’s immediately impressive is the beauty and scale of the world and how smoothly it runs, especially given that this map, which is allegedly bigger than Fallout 4, Skyrim and The Witcher 3 combined, is running on the Wii U.

Um, yeah. Xenoblade X's open world consists of empty fields. Exploration begins at "run through environment" and ends there. No interaction at all.
I'm sure anything I can say be considered instantly biased, but I disagree with this. :) Exploring often reminds me of Crackdown - for example, was just doing chapter 5 (wont spoil specifics) and using careful jumps to basically use the mountain ridges to get around a bunch of tough enemies to reach the goal - I love finding stuff like that and I feel like it's all over the game world. There's so much to see and do - and thanks to the combat (which is really great IMO), I never get tired of exploring in this game.

Haven't played Fallout yet so not comparing to anything else, just saying, on its own, I find the game world to pretty nice!

The combat is Xenoblade X's biggest strength and that in itself makes you want to go out into the world to battle creatures. It's just that, on its own, when dissected and analysed, the open world design isn't what I'd consider "impressive".

Note that I'm not saying this is a bad game (it's definitely not), instead I'm questioning the "most impressive of 2015" quote since having experienced some open worlds of other games in the genre this year, it doesn't add up for me.

Yeah, often times is not really about being able to interact with stuff.

I'll never forget this moment in the first Xenoblade where I was in Mechonis Field, and there's this tiny ledge way high up on the map, that apparently will kill you if you jump off. But it's this tiny place that let's you drop, where everywhere else in the map there's something telling you to not do it...
And if you drop from that point you fall into a giant barrel of oil, that doesn't kill you and lets you access a secret area of the map that has a unique enemy (and I think an item) on it.

No interactivity, no picking up spoons and forks, but that is extremely satisfying to do.

Although I'll disagree on the combat (I hate the MMO-style combat from Xenoblade >.>), exploration and level design is not about how many actions you can do with an object or in a given place, but how well you use those actions. And Xenoblade excels at it.

Also disclaimer that I never played Xenoblade X, so I'm saying that based only on my experience with the first game. But I've seen quite a bit of footage from X, and I totally saw some of those moments in gameplay.

I had a ton of fun exploring the Bionis' left shoulder, and there was literally nothing to do there but run around and see things.
