20 hours in and the plot is kind of like Xenoblade meets Assassin's Creed open world games. Do side stuff, explore, fight monsters, get to know the npcs, inhabitants and the lore of the world, do a story mission here and there every few hours and get some main plot movement, repeat.

The game actually reminds me a lot of FFX-2, it's not really so much about the plot but fleshing out and exploring this new world and the stories of the people in it. Once you accept that it's not a plot-driven game, it's great fun, just like FFX-2 was.

Thanks for these impressions about the story structure of the game! That sounds exactly like what I thought would be needed for people going from Xenoblade to X, that they'd need to be open-minded that this game does things differently regarding the world-building, and let themselves acclimate to it.

I think what makes fans of the first Xenoblade apprehensive is that they're skeptical about the "side stuff" being substantial, and go so far as to say that because side-stuff isn't incorporated in some grand plot that leads to a definite conclusion, that side-stuff in general is "pointless." Xenoblade Chronicles had only one "optional" sidequest that was fully voiced with cutscenes, so the bulk of what would be regarded as "substantial" content felt like it was the main plot only. Then the world-building was left to NPCs who gave two short sentences of dialogue to read, then send you off to collect stuff and kill monsters or something, etc. and return to them for two more sentences of dialogue :p

So, I finally got to update the OP with all the NNIDs you guys posted and linked to a bunch of the latest impressions and updated the FAQ with some bits about the DLC and the ever repeating "bu-but no story!!" nonsense.

Sorry so, but can anyone can answer my question before?

Whether this game has romance or not, since Xenogears-Xenosaga-Xenoblade all has strong romance elements and I enjoyed the way Takahashi did his romances.
I find it hilarious (and sad) that not one person has acknowledged this question. I wouldn't bet on it, especially if you are thinking MC and some character could get together. I'd like them to Mass Effect it up honestly, but it doesn't seem likely at all. There may be some built in romance or at least hints between party members though. Tatsu x Lyn OTP (in a cute platonic way, not weird). More likely is Elly and the dude with a beard.

Thanks! That was exactly it. Never noticed there was an Assault rifle and an Assoult rifle.
It's actually Asalto, Granada GG's stuff is all Spanish versions of the words Sakuraba uses. Meredeth/s is German, and the fourth company is Italian. Haven't checked the others yet.

Anybody tried going out of the planet using the power of flight packs? Just wondering what's the ceiling in this game.
There's a ceiling a bit above the highest altitude areas in the game(still a reasonable distance between them) that's similar to the one during story fights and certain parts of the game where you can't leave an area, that green hexbarrier type thing. There's also a giant square of it around the section the five continents are in, I think, preventing you from looping around the planet...

Sorry I took so long with this fox. I was sleeping when you asked.

It's from a Nico Nico video
http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm26184163

You need an account to view it btw.

It's a video for the song "Don't Worry" and shows footage of a Doll flying around Mira. No story spoilers, just environments.

(Been busy so haven't had time to keep track of things here) I'm going by your description and assuming it's this video in case you can't watch on Nico Nico. If you want to keep the enjoyment of witnessing environments to yourself, don't watch. :p

Finally got the last two level 50 Dolls in my party thanks to the DLC. Now where in the world do I get materials for the level 60 ones?

Green barrier when you hit the borders of the map.

Can someone who has put a lot of time into the game talk about the differences between the dolls? Like are the heavy ones just always preferable if you can afford them? Someone mentioned that a few pages back but didn't really expand on it. It is something I am very curious about.
It's getting late here, so I'll just do a quick copy & paste. :p

There's actually a
heart shaped
pond somewhere out there that I saw on Miiverse :p One could undress their avatar and go for a dip in it.

Dunno if you've figured this out yet, but...
the requirement for that Kizuna is just 'accept' the marriage Simple. You can start the Kizuna once it's in your quest list, no need to go looking for them somewhere.

...You're right, my brain stopped working after seeing the name of the quest in the requirements...
Well I guess I'll do that quest first thing tomorrow. For now I need some sleep :p

Just finished Story Quest 8, I'll do a few sidequests tomorrow but I think I'll kind of rush to complete Chapter 9. I want dat flight pack. After that I'll take my time once again completing everything I can between story missions.

I just realized, I haven't seen any footage of anyone playing as the party members. I know being able to completely customize your MC means changing characters for variety's sake is less important, but does this game really not have a way of playing as the other characters?

You can control anyone in your party.

You can play as other party members. Works the same as in Xenoblade, just switch another character to the top position.

Edit: lol, beaten
Where did you guys suddenly come from?! :p

Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
Well, I was clearing up simple quests and normal quests and kizuna quests before moving on to the ch.5 or ch.6 story (don't remember where I am; but I don't have Dolls yet, still on foot) and a normal quest led me try to REPAIR A HELICOPTER by finding 1 electric motor on the 2nd continent.

This led me to a 10 hour long gaming session where I explored the entire 2nd continent on foot (even the one frontier point where you have to swim halfway across the continent for an empty beach) outside the final north area which I think you need a Doll to access (on top of the waterfall). The 2nd continent is absolutely mindblowing amazing in design. I was pretty disappointed with the first continent feeling like a small area blown up x 20 with not a lot of variety to it or level design, just open. And What I've seen of the 3rd continent is pretty open as well, but the 2nd continent is just an amazingly tightly designed level of epic proportions. It's like half or 1/3rd the entire game map of Xenoblade in one seamless continent filled with so much variety, layered pathways and hidden secrets everywhere.

Without a doubt I'll say the 2nd continent is the best designed area I've played in an rpg and sold me on the game completely after being underwhelmed by the first continent.

And after 10 hours of running around collecting about 400 items...I still never found the goddamn electric motor wtf :|

wait, does this mean I had the item the whole time? I couldn't figure out the point of the quest when I was asked to fix the motor, and then I just did it.

How's the exploration?

Xenoblade's world was great, but I never really felt compelled to explore outside of a few instances.
exploration is damn essential this time, and a ton of fun.

So since dolls are so much more powerful than your character does it ever feel like your character is almost pointless? Or is there a lot of content for being on foot?

Damn, that song's amazing. I need a clean version of it as well!

Isn't it, though? I've said it before, it's one of the most evocative gaming tracks I've heard in an age. Hopefully someday an OST version pops up. I check YouTube every few days, but can't seem to find it yet (the absolutely insane track titles don't help either).

That's a relief. I just couldn't find anyone playing as any character but their own, which probably says something about how satisfying it is to customize them. I assume artes gained from Kizuna quests are exclusive to the characters for which those quests are focused? Is there a way to build your character with these or not. Oh, and how customizable are all the other characters? Like weapons, combat roles and such (Dolls/Skells I know at least)?

There's no reason to play as named characters. Kizuna arts are unlocked per weapon, not per character and player character has access to all unlocked Skills (not Arts) you unlocked.

^ In a related question, can you take Cross out of your party and have a group of just story characters? I could understand if you can't for the main story obviously, but it would be neat if they let you have that option afterwards.

Iirc you can't. Plus even regular quests have dialogue choices which affect affinity with other characters.

The pickup rate for the motor is pretty low. So most folks spend hours trying to get the single one to start the dialog to actually fix the rotor lol. Its a lot of quick travelling then running back to the area. Since each time one QTs the harvest points respawn.

Good to see that you already got it taken care of.

Oh, really? I got mine from the first/second item when I found the right area. Same with most of the other collection items for quests.

Lots of JP players have been complaining about the pick up rate of the item for that particular quest it seems. It took myself almost 2 hours also. Its totally random though. After I managed to find a second one while just passing through that area for something else. Was not amused by that at all.

Its stupid that the devs did not make that general yellow circles appear for those collection quests. Since its such a pain in the ass to go finding areas as is. Plus hardly anyone writes those notes anyways. One thing for sure is devs need to remember the average user is not going to take part in the social bullshit design, therefore you need to make sure the game also has design mechanics allowing for those who just want to sit back and enjoy playing the game without having to go look up stuff on the internet. Otherwise it just comes off as a pain in the ass to the less core gamers. Esp considering how many of those collection quests there are.

Not the smartest design really. I know why they did it, but by no means does that mean it was an actual good decision. Same reason I bet why there is no guide book yet too. Is they are hoping people will use the social crap.

Its pretty much the major irritating thing about the game at this point in time. Well that and the over reliance on doing attacks based on what your AI partners suggest while fighting on foot otherwise your attack power is pretty much shit for the most part. Not sure why they went and made the game designed like that, considering the combat system was fine as is in Xenoblade originally. This way actually feels like they went and gimped it making it more of a simon says type of game. Since ignoring those suggestions and just doing whatever really ruins the DPS. I still like the combat, but the system itself am not amused with personally. At least you can semi control things by what skills and arts you have equipped on those members. At least when you have the dolls you dont need to pay attention to that as much, due to some of the stupid damage output weapons such as the giant blades.

With my character all I have to do now is finish out the last 2 skill trees since got the other ones finished. Really like how the game allows you to use whatever weapons / skills you have mastered from the other classes allowing for some great freedom. That is highly appreciated. So Ive just been going AR + Sword the whole way, while having my skills set up to taunt and tank yet deal out good damage.

Hmm I'm lv 39 now and kinda want/need to buy a new Doll. Was thinking about investing in a Lv 40 doll now, but those aren't available at the store yet. Do they unlock once you reach Lv 40 or is there some sort of quest requirement for it?

There's no LV40 doll, you need to level up the first company to LV5 to unlock new dolls. They're pretty expensive.

It basically goes from 30 to 50. And the lv 50 dolls are in the million+ range.

:( That's too bad, I was looking forward to upgrading everyone. But I guess this allows me to save some money, if the new dolls cost millions I will need it, haha

Yeah the parts are not any cheaper either. So you will really have to consider if you want to fully kit out a single lv 50 doll or try to go for multiple first. Thankfully you can get some decent equipment from drops so might be worth going after more lv 50 dolls for your characters first.

Finally got my Doll, yay! Didn't realize you can't fly off the bat though >_< So still can't reach some of the highest area/floating island areas frontier points. When do I get the ability to fly with a Doll?

But even with just jumping and driving, getting around feels like a completely different game when in your Doll. It's a very cool experience even if the framerate can't take it sometimes. You can just shoot through the areas so fast. Helps a ton for collection quests too since you pick up so many items while driving.

I have no idea how to measure the balance on the game anymore at this point. On foot it was like anything in the 5-10 levels above you range is doable with the fewer enemies at once, the more doable (so 1 enemy 10 levels ahead of you is no problem, but 5 enemies 5 levels ahead of you at once can spell doom). With the lvl.20 (current party is lvl.26 Inner) Doll I kind of feel more powerful, but not really that much more powerful. Fighting medium-sized unique Overed mobs 5-10 levels ahead around lvl.30-35 is still tough and the Doll makes it easier in some ways with higher defense/damage, but without all the Artes buffing and debuffing and comboing and stuff it's not necessarily better. And when fighting big enemies, even enemies 5 levels below your party can put up a fight.

I'm guessing that level 20 Doll is stronger than a level 20 Inner, but a level 28 Inner is stronger than a level 20 Doll or something like that? Also I'm guessing once you get Dolls for your other party members it changes battles up a bunch. Looking forward to hitting level 30 soon so I can buy 3 more Dolls and run a 4 person level 30 Doll party. It's nice to finally have something to spend cash on since I have millions of funds at this point from doing all the simple and normal quests I can find constantly.

So I can't tell if Dolls are part of the main story or some totally optional thing? I'm guessing you'll need Dolls to reach some of the story areas, but the game kind of makes it seem like they're optional.

Also can anyone explain Overclock in both Inner and Robot form? It's kind of hilarious how the game just introduces a new mechanic partway through with a single screen saying "hey, now you can use Overclock" without explaining anything about what it does. And the lack of explaination for Dolls once you get one is pretty crazy too. I had no idea where to even find my Doll after I tried to make a jump to a floating island and fell into the bottomless canyon destroying my Doll.
