XSEED to Publish Three New Indie Games (Shantae, Touhou: Scarlet C., Exile's End)

Posted this on our forums, but figure it's worth clarifying here as well: Don't let the "Touhou" name fool you, as this isn't a mainline Touhou entry. Rather, it's a fan game made by another company, and it is -- for all intents and purposes -- another game in the Napishtim/Felghana/Origin line of Ys titles.

Like, straight-up, it's basically a spiritual followup to Ys Origin (multiple playable characters and all), but set in a variety of outdoor areas reminiscent of Felghana. And it's GORGEOUS -- I actually think that visually, it surpasses the games that inspired it, with some of the most colorful, detailed 3D backgrounds I've ever seen in an indie title. It joins the ranks of games like Astebreed in proving that indie does not necessarily equal pixel-art 2D, and in the right hands, indie 3D can truly be breathtaking.

Hmmmm...these are BIG WORDS and BIG SHOES for this game too fill.

What, you think this is all we've got? Come on, now! You know us better than that! ;)

Do it. Do the thing.

I wouldn't hesitate on Scarlet Curiosity if we were getting it on PC too, but PS4 digital probably means I'll hold off until it's on sale/cheap.

I love supporting XSeed as I think they're the best localization company in the West, but none of these games really grab my attention. Maybe the Touhou one. I'll have to wait and see if that comes to PC in English.

pretty crazy that we're getting (fan made) touhou games in the west. Sucks the main games seemingly didnt work out with that playism deal but oh well.

XSEED stays being the best

of course, i don't think you guys have said anything about ys viii yet

Anyone expecting news for that this year, is going to be severely disappointed. Better to get your expectations in check now so their big announcement thread isn't full of people thinking we had a chance of getting it already.

Akiba's Trip
Senran Kagura
Onechanbara
Trails of Cold Steel

XSEED is certainly becoming one of my favorite publishers as of late. I'm not particularly interested in any of these titles but I might pick one of the down the line just to show support for XSEED.

Keep on being the best, guys.

Can we expect any future Wii U retail support after Shantae? Perhaps something original from Japan? I know Wii U doesn't really have anything to localize on that front (unless you're somehow willing and able to do a Taiko game), but still.

Figure I can pop my head in once more for this. ;)

damn, now i need to take a closer look.

All over dat Shantae physical release. And the Touhou game sounds interesting too, since Ys Origin may very well be my favorite ARPG of all time.

I am assuming there will be Fate Extella and Akibas Beat

I just REALLY hope you're not skipping all the cool Marvelous games for Vita :|

Oooh, nice! I figured they would likely do Akiba's Beat but I didn't expect to hear anything for a while. Might be too soon for an official announcement but that's certainly a good indication that it's coming.

Other than that, the only game I can think of right now that could be an E3 announcement and that I'd be excited for is Tokyo Xanadu.

What push? You mean the untranslated release of a mainline game? Yeah, great effort.
This is as much a Touhou release as Jack Bros was an SMT game.

As long as Zun doesn't want his games being localized, there will never be anything more than a niche fandom for Touhou here. Stuff like this is not helping, and XSeed shouldn't settle for his table scraps.

Yeah, that's basically what I meant by it winding up so lackluster. The fact that it wasn't even given authorization to be localized by Playism (which it HAS to have been; considering how small Touhou scripts are it couldn't have been a lack of resources) made this seem doomed from the start. It'll probably never be 100% known what the parameters were between ZUN and Playism but it resulted in a product that only a hardcore fan would want to purchase, especially with Touhou having a long history of imports and pirate downloads along with translation patches that are up and running within weeks.

I don't mind that a fanmade game got localized (especially since it's definitely inspired by Ys), but it would have been glorious to see a group like Xseed be a hub for Touhou localizations, both mainline and the better fangames, much like how they are for Falcoms releases. It certainly would have gotten more sales if something like this became a regular and consistently well-done venture.
