Yakuza 0 coming to the WEST - "PS4 Console Exclusive"

I'm lost. Does this take place after Yakuza 4's flashback with majima and his buddy committing a hit on 20 rival yakuzas?

actually lets rate the best places to start Yakuza

1, 4, 2, 0, 5, 3

I'd at least move 5 and 3 around. Storywise (not pacing wise) 3 is a cleaner starting point than 5 which would be a huge clusterfuck to understand if your a newbie in the series. So many points in the game I can think of would fall flat if your not a fan of the series, or have at least played a couple of the previous games. Then again, story wise I personally feel 5 is the most difficulty to understand, what with it bouncing between 5 characters, and a few other reasons that I can't really go into without spoiling the game.

I'd say in terms of starting the series in terms of story, I'd rate them:

1, 0, 4, 2 or 3, 5,

1 is the best place, its where the character development for the characters begins.

0 is a prequel so it doesn't really rely on previous knowledge of the game. You'll miss out on a few easter eggs and nods to other characters in the series but nothing you wouldn't then pick up when playing the sequels.

4 is basically a fresh start, so it does a good job of introducing 3 new characters into the mix. However there are certain plot points late in the game that tie into the first game, not to mention many of Kiryu's side stories hark back to characters featured in the first two games.

2 or 3, I can't decide. I feel 2 relies on parts of 1's story at points such as a couple of returning characters plus some of the Omi plot is oh so briefly mentioned in 2. However at the same time, you could easily go in blind and enjoy the game, especially as its got the best antagonist in the series by far, and its such a damn fun game. Pity that its a pretty rare/expensive game in the USA since its the one I'd totally recommend everyone playing solely on a gameplay level.
3 I'm not sure on. Certain points would certainly make more sense if you'd played 1 especially, but I still feel it doesn't pull on the past series stories enough to make it a bad starting point in terms of story. However its the pacing that I know people have issues with. For the record I like the down time and the orphans and that other side to Kiryu, but I know there are plenty of people who aren't fans of the slow start, and don't like the fact that the game doesn't really get "started"until chapter 4/5

5. As mentioned above, its pretty convoluted at times and in my opinion would be a fairly bad starting point for new fans in the series.

Hope that all makes sense! I'm personally hoping that Kiwami ends up getting translated (can't see why not if 0 does well) as that'd definitely help further ease fans into the series.

If it's technically Atlus publishing, then it might just not be for Sega to comment on and will leave it to the European publisher. Either way, we'll get it late at best I assume.

Good point, hopefully Sega/Atlus confirms things concretely one way or the other.

actually lets rate the best places to start Yakuza

1, 4, 2, 0, 5, 3

IMO

1 is the best place to start because everything afterwards builds on what was established in the first game. sort of goes without saying and its pretty cheap in EU and in NA.

4 is more convenient if you dont have a PS2 and also introduces a lot of new characters. its not as good a place to start as 1, but it could be worse.

2 is the best game in the series and is sort of an isolated story anyway. there are lots of references to events and characters from the first game, but in terms of the series as a whole it doesnt have too much consequence. still this is IMO a better place to start than 3 or 5 or 0, but its expensive in NA, less so in EU.

0 is a prequel, but again it builds on what you know about these characters and youll like it more if youve already met them. plus its a year away, you shouldnt be without yakuza for that long.

i have to confess i havent played 5 but since the cast comes largely from 4 and 1 you shouldnt really start with it. you should play 5, but only after you understand whats going on - there is no recap feature in y5.

3 is, imo, the worst game in the series, suffering from pacing problems and since it relies heavily on the events of first game for dramatic purposes it not only would give you a sour (imo) impression of the series' potential but it would mean less to you than if you saved it til after AT LEAST y1.

...agree with a lot of this, and yeah 4 is a fantastic jump-on point i think
most have catch-up videos you can watch at the start too

So is Yakuza 0 actually a good game?

by many accounts, it's one of the best! so, so hyped

I got rid of my PS3, nothing I can do

Yes let me buy a game for a system I sold years ago.
That makes complete sense.

i mean, i tend to keep OG hardware for this kinda thing, personally even if i didn't id be tempted to drop the $35 or whatever just to see the series stay afloat, but i mean, i do understand

my comment is largely aimed at the NO PHYSICAL NO BUY crowd, they can go fly a kite

YOOOOO WHAT IS HAPPENING THIS YEAR!?!? DEAR GOD, NIER, FE, FF7, SOULS. NI NO FREAKING KUNI, PROBABLY MORE, I DUNNO, I GOTTA GO LY DOWN.

Great year for the PS4.

So I'm a sega fan but I don't know much about this series. I heard that this is a remake of the original Yakuza? Is it? If not, would this be a good place to start?

It's not, it's a prequel. There is a remake of the first game in development, but we don't know yet if it'll be released in the west.

Well yes, but there are degrees of commitment, you know? Some are greater than others, and a single game verses a series is quite a bit of difference, wouldn't you agree? Thanks for the advice, though. I guess I'll skip it if it's not a great place to start out.
Zero IS the best place to start the series.

It takes place even before Yakuza 1 so you won't be lost whatsoever. And from what I understand it finishes right into the beginning of the first Yakuza that's getting a remake and which after this announcement today, has a pretty good chance of being localized next.

So for anyone who is interested in the Yakuza series but haven't played any of them before, Yakuza Zero is the perfect place for you to start.

I played 1 & 2 and loved them but I just couldn't get into 3 so I skipped the others so I think I'll pick this up as a point to jump back into it.

I would just like to state for the record that the above statement is 100% false.

That is all.

EDIT: And since I'm here, Sony didn't "do" the localization of Y5 either. SEGA was heavily involved.

I almost didn't recognize you Null Pointer. No more Dr. Manhattan avatar?

ummm "console exclusive?"

Has a yakuza game ever come to pc in the past??

I still need to play 5 :o

Unfortunately no PC ports so far, I still hope the series crosses over to the PC eventually. The only game(s) that got ported to non Sony consoles so far is 1&2 HD, which were also released on the Wii U.

We're living in a world where

FF7 Remake is happening
The Last Guardian exists
Ni No Kuni 2 is coming out
Yakuza 5 is out like next week
Yakuza 0 is coming out
Shenmue 3 is real
Nintendo has added Cloud to the Smash Bros roster
Dark Souls 3 is out next year

Awesome, hell yes. So awesome. Amazing games.

So which games are we missing now

Missing: Ishin and Kenzan (Samurai spin off games), both PSP "Black Panther" side stories and Yakuza 1&2 HD Collection.

Unconfirmed: Yakuza 1 Remake (Kiwami) and Yakuza 6. Neither are out yet in Japan and both have a fairly decent chance of getting released in the future in English now that 0 is getting released.

I also wonder if the awesome Vita companion app for 0 will get released in English?

I'm curious if there's a technical reason why the PS3 version of Y0 isn't being localized, or if it's a business decision? It'd be really cool to have Y3,4,5 and 0 all on one console.

Gonna guess it's a business decision. Aksys are bringing Revelator to PS3, no reason why Sega can't do Y0.

So i am guessing they want to see how sales for Yakuza 5 go in EU before deciding on a release? They already have a good indication on sales in the US because of pre orders.

I really want the hd games myself.

But is 1 hd needed with the remake

Still would like the samurai games but I know those will never happen.

Hd games make little sense, already have voice and translation

Didn't expect Yakuza 5 to be localized until they announced it last year.

Didn't expect Yakuza 0 to be localized until they announced it this year, and it happened. So awesome.

PS4 console exclusive... Sega, don't toy with my heart.

Ugh, if this comes out on PC later on I'll be annoyed because I wouldn't want to wait if it's not a simultaneous release.

Physical is great news, though!
