Yakuza 0 |OT| Yes, you can start with this one!

I played Yakuza when it came out on PS2 and I enjoyed it but it didn't really stick with me so I don't know if my memory is failing me when it comes to that game in terms of what it did well but all I can say is that Yakuza 0 has me hook, line, and sinker.

The writing of the side quests is phenomenal in my opinion and really does reward exploration in ways that open-world games always seem to promise. I'm still early in the game but my enjoyment of the game has also encouraged me to stop and smell the roses and engage with the mini-games more as well. I think I tried each once in Yakuza 1 before moving on with the story.

I'm only on chapter 4 but the story as well really has me. I think
the scene when Majima goes to the chiropractor to perform the hit for his boss is so great. It bounces from humor and intrigue from one beat to the next and made me instantly care about what happened to Makoto and her boss. I can't say that Haruka's story ever moved me in the same way.
I'm interested to see if my feelings change in regard to the first game when Kiwami comes out. Part of me wonders if the English dub was a hangup for me with Yakuza PS2.

Needless to say I'm all in on Yakuza right now and I haven't even gotten to the cabaret/real estate side quests that everybody talks so much about.

I personally didn't find it that hard. Entered four times and won three (lost the first time when I was still unaware how it works). Just need to look at your opponents strongest hand/s and counter it. Jennifer is probably the best person to use.

Fuck Jennifer. 2:1 odds on her winning and she lost to some scrub on a weak move even though Jennifer's background was changing colour and the other person's was white. I don't actually understand how catfights work, apparently. Seems like a giant RNG.

okay I think...I just finished chapter 6.

just a couple things... i'm guessing beast is the best fighting style to use if you're fighting multiple opponents? even then though I feel like it's really sluggish.

Best option I've found for Kiryu so far, yeah. Beast works especially well when you're in an environment rich with props, thanks to the auto-pick-up move when you attack near an item. Kiryu can even grab motorcycles in beast mode, so make good use of everything around you. Also make sure you're using the Triangle moves often. L1 + Triangle lets you run through a crowd without taking damage, holding down Triangle lets you do an explosive charge to clear some space, and hitting Triangle after an attack combo will down enemies (and often kills lower-level thugs). You can beat down three or four people at once with that last move, it really makes up for the lack of mobility. All of that is without even spending a lot of money upgrading beast moves--I've spent only 9 million yen after all this time, and only have one of Tatsu's moves.

There's one end-of-chapter fight later on that really lets Beast mode shine, it's one of my favourite fights in the whole game so far. It's so damned good.
End of chapter 10, the Tojo gauntlet with Oda and Tachibana--CO-OP MOVES OMG

(note I am playing on Normal so this advice might be awful for higher difficulties)

Congrats! I've had the game since the Japanese launch and still haven't got it haha. Any tips for the Batting Cage mini game? lol

Or the Ultimate Battles?

I hate the Batting Mini-game. lol. What I did was do the Super Gold Rush. Look at the bat, as soon as it stops and the character loosens their stance, hit the ball. Don't even look at the ball and just put the target where you want and swing when the animation shifts. It will still take some getting used to, but that's the gist of it.

I cheesed the "5 Million Yen from Batting" CP goal by batting in Super Gold Rush only until the 6th hit and then quitting to repeat. You should get about 1 million yen in profit. Doing that versus trying to go through the whole thing and risking losing it all was optimal for me.

Ultimate Battles, it depends which one as some people seem to have trouble with different ones. For me Proving Grounds 8 was about the worst.
Majima has a limited time to beat all goons while his style randomizes. Try to take advantage of Breaker's spin move with Square, Square, Square, Triangle. Slugger's Nunchaku with Square, Square, Triangle mash. And use the Fish cannon in Thug Mode.
The platinum forum has some tips for the others.

Edit: Derp. You meant the Ultimate Battles, not Climax Battles in general. Lemme see. Which one are you on? For this set, Number 2 was the worst for me.
Sera here is super powerful and fast. Use Breaker's Spin Dance, but keep your distance and make sure to press X to dodge backwards if you are at all too close to standing Sera. He has lots of armor. So set up the "Square, Square, Square, Triangle" away from him and try zoning in to hit him from the back. When he kicks you out of it, just press Triangle to counterattack and move away from him to repeat.

I can back up this strategy. I did the same thing, it'll mean you'll need to play the mode a few times to complete it, but its less risky compared to trying to do the entire thing in one run and potentially come away empty handed.

That's the strategy i've been trying for batting, I keep making it to the fifth one (one before I plan to quit out at) and just mess it up haha.

Proving Grounds 8 is a tough one alright. I keep running out of health at the last guy.

Also, imagine my surprise when I started watching The Age of Shadows tonight and Sagawa shows up!

EDIT: To make this a little more relevant to Y0 - The mocap in this game is fantastic. I was able to recognize the actor who plays Sagawa in seconds mainly due to his body language (the first scene he's in is further away, so you don't see his face as much)

the faces really are amazing on some of these characters. man i could watch kuze and awano all day

Yeah, just keep trying on both of those. For Proving 8, just pray for Breaker to keep showing up (the best option) and abuse the heck out of it. The last guy is a nuisance, but try to hit him from the back and take out the goons if you get him on the ground.

Agreed. Someone said "presence" before, but I also just like the faces of all the antagonists. It's not like the animations are otherworldly, but they really made it count in making them feel intimidating to Kiryu.

Wooow! Haha. Fabulous just like in the game.

Started playing this last night. I got home pretty late so I didn't even make it to the end of Chapter 1, but I'm already loving it so much more than I anticipated. It's my first Yakuza game -- outside messing around in the demo for 3 -- and it really does feel like a pretty good place to start.

Everything is really stylish and already the perfect combination of cool and aggressively stupid.

What's the reward for beating the disco subquest?
I'm asking because I think I'll never be able to succeed.
This mini game is just too hard.

I'm at Chapter 16 and been spending a lot of time lately with The Dragon & Tiger doing Equipment Searches.

The annoying thing is, I only have one single material left as a ?, got all the other ones. It's the one to the far left on the 6th row in the inventory Parts screen, left of the Animal Skin. Anyone know what it is?

EDIT: Of course, mere minutes after I made this post I got it, it was the Yew Branch.

you saved at the phone booth before turning off your PS4, right?

I usually don't care about trophies (and still don't really), but I really needed an excuse to play even more of this game, so I went for the Platinum. It has really made one hell of an early 2017 for me! Thanks again to YakuzaGAF for giving such a warm welcome when introducing me to the series. I'm hoping Kiwami continues my high accordingly.

God damn, I don't know how you did it so quick. Your completion list game must be top tier lol.

I might do a legendary run soon, I'm not sure how difficult they made it this time but I'm guessing they're just upping the HP/damage levels of all the enemies or something.

This mini game is just too hard.

It's not too bad once you get the hang of the timing (for me it is the square being smaller than the border, not on top of the border like most other rhythm games).

The rewards for both Osaka and Kamurocho's dance-off is essentially the same:
A Fan that is just cosmetic and adds a few points in future disco scores. Not very practical.

However, the champion in Osaka will help you in the Cabaret mini-game if you defeat her. She's a good Gold unit too, so that helps.

lol. Took my time enjoying the game at first and then just found myself coming back. It feels fast in retrospect, but it felt like ages in the moments. Also, the games I feared still haunted me like: Outrun, West Park Casino, Mahjong, Fantasy Zone and Catfights. As I'm sure is usually the case, it's more time-consuming than difficult though.

Legendary Run really isn't all scary. It's as you say, more damage from bosses, you do comparatively less damage or enemies have more health (at least for bosses). Focused on Beast Mode for Kiryu and Breaker Mode for Majima almost purely.

Oh yes, thank you, but I'm guessing that's a common problem for the first time. I actually watched a little bit of the first Giant Bomb video before falling asleep -- their running around in Shenmue is what originally reminded me that I wanted to give this series a real shot -- and I wasn't totally convinced they'd remember to save.

Well congrats! You've inspired me to maybe go get the platinum, but I guess we'll see how long I can go for before I lose steam hah...definitely dreading Outrun and Fantasy Zone though.

But yeah, I plan on maxing beast mode for sure. Starting a fight next to a bike/motorcycle pretty much ends it right there.

While it worked out in this case since you even got the Yakuza tag and everything, for all future avatar adventures just know that the forum software automatically resizes the image you upload for your avatar and keeps the aspect ratio intact. No need to manually edit the image if all you want is to have it properly sized.

This is kind of a general PSA.

This punch out artist minigame is infuriating. The terrible camera angles and small arena have contributed to me losing it 5 times in a row on the first guy.

I am playing on hard. And since I'm quoting you I ended up reading that spoiler...
those 2 fuckers take you on and the same time?

Okay so anyways, I remember when I first learned beast, during the tutorial they were telling you there was a counter attack, I thought it was circle or square held down but it sounds like it is triangle? I also often forget to push buttons that aren't the x/o/triangle/square. what does l1 and all the other buttons do generally? i also notice you can't dodge around much with beast either.

damn, the facial models really were on point, then. will do another round of remote play at work around 2. pickin back up where left off with majima...

I accidentally got a funny trophy doing my real estate farming last night. After a fight I just stood there and forgot to pause and I was checking something on my phone.

An NPC, one of those guys dressed like they work at the hostess clubs, was lighting a cigarette for Kiryu in the middle of Theater Square and a trophy popped up. I laughed. It was pretty cool little moment.

1: That's just how badass he is. Plus he references at a later point that he is going to carve out his on
Yakuza way
.
2: Yes there is friend... yes there is.
3: That shower was an integrated plot push to help the story along. Crazy Kaz did that out of consideration for the host. Plus.. didn't you see how all of the splash from the sewer water somehow disappear from Kiryu's white suit. I'm not sure if there is anyone that can brush the funk of their shoulders quite like Kiryu.
1. Is it after chapter 6?
2. ah...well, will I get to see some of that in this game then?
3. not just the sewer water that disappeared, all the blood on his suit when he was fighting out on the streets prior disappeared too.

this is the first Yakuza game i've bought and i started it last night.. is the whole game going to be constantly interrupted by cutscenes and non interactive dialogue sections?

Yup, my first Yakuza game as well and loved the first chapter. On the 3rd chapter now and it's getting really exhausting to play. I dread every subquest because I'm just mashing X trying to get through the dialog so I can actually do something.

The game is fun in between all that but yikes it's making me not want to play.

Boy, the substories are one of the best parts about the game.

That's like playing Final Fantasy 7 and then just getting someone else to do the combat for you.
I've only played probably 5-6 hours of Yakuza 0, and it's my first one, and I can tell you already if you don't like cutscenes, then this game probably isn't for you.

Myself, I'm fine with them, and if they are done well, really enhance the story. And yes, they are done well (IMO).
Yes, the story would be a genuine hindrance if the cutscenes weren't well done and if the characters weren't fun but they are.

Finally got all the CP involving Mahjong. I still suck at that game. That just leaves darts, shogi, koi koi, and...catfighting. I hate that damn cheating nurse!
