YAKUZA 5 LOCALIZED FOR PS3

for all the knocks on Dead Souls, it lets you play as Majima.

Majima.

The numbers don't tell the entire story, though. Sega did a pretty bad job of selling the games, skipped some spin-offs but released others (that were critically panned), never really working with the media to help get Yakuza like Tecmo has been trying to do with Musou games recently, releasing games with boxart like this

Yakuza3_boxart.jpg

The game was never going to be a huge success but they could have gotten better, not-declining numbers if they gave a shit.

Just to add, they cut large portions of Yakuza 3. Their reasoning? It wouldn't resonate with fans.

They pretty much botched everything. It's reassuring that we won't be having to deal with such terrible decisions going forward.

Dead Souls has a really nice, sentimental/warm ending. Was a nice piece of closure for fans who've been following the games since the original on PS2. Plus, it has the best credit roll track in the series. Worth playing alone just to feel those feels while listening to this fucking awesome piece.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about that.

Even if 99% of fans would never touch that stuff, no one wants to buy a kneecapped game. It was a dumb decision.

and a few side missions and such too, I think. But the completion menu/totals reflected the changes. not the biggest deal in the grand scheme of things.

gotcha. In this day and age though, there really is no excuse other than money and time constraints, which really was the reason why.

Wait i'm confused ...

is Dead Souls canon or not ? because it sure as shit doesn't look like it .. it has that one guy who died in Y2 wielding a Barret-style gun-arm ..

Also, Yakuza 4 was such an amazing game, even if i didnt do half the shit in it, like the hostess bar take overs etc, the living, breathing world the game creates is just amazing

If Dead Souls was more like Binary Domain, I believe more people would have liked it a lot, the Yakuza team put a great bit into make BD and it shows.

One thing I wished was the dlc in the JP version was made for the US version so you could play as Kiryu,Majima, Ryuji and Akiyama in Binary Domain.

Yeah its in an alt universe.

and to their credit they realized that people do, in fact, care about the slice of life stuff and left it all in for 4. except the trivia game that would have been impossible for most western audiences.

Well it involves shooting zombies
it's pretty non-canon

damn! Did not know that. Crazy stuff.

Mind you that some of the things listed are completely exagerrated (why are changed signs on the list?), as Yuretald said it wasn't the biggest deal. Even if the hostess management was cut the hostess sidequests were still there.
Cutting Answer x Answer made totally sense, people who cry over it are crazy, we are talking about a massive quiz about Japanese popular culture.

I don't think it was, but without spoiling anything (not sure if you've played it) the credit roll pays homage to the entire series. The ending for Dead Souls itself, whether or not its canon, is just generally warm and endearing. I felt a lot of closure at the time with the series (as I expected NA to continue to struggle to receive later iterations, if ever again).

I've somewhat detached myself from Yakuza over the past couple years because of Sega's neglect to the series in the west (as most, naturally, have done, I'm assuming). My avatar currently on GAF was a tribute to both my love for Yakuza/Nagoshi and his studio at the time (I LOVED Binary Domain). Haven't had the heart to change it, ha! I kind of left all of my excitement for gaming on the table back when both Binary Domain and Dead Souls released...glad I can finally reignite that passion!

What happens at the end of Dead Souls?

damn! Did not know that. Crazy stuff.

being upset that some of that stuff isn't in there is just patently ridiculous though. they cut out a shitty racist comment? good.

being able to see the full magazines would be amusing to most people who can't read Japanese for about 30 seconds. what would be weirder, if they left it in but untranslated, or just show the covers?

I did kind of enjoy the hostess stuff in 4, so it's a shame that was cut, and side stories are always fun.

e: yeah, Dead Souls is 100% not canon, but it really is kind of a love story to the whole series. a lot of fun "what ifs" are explored, and the whole thing is a bunch of funny references to characters and events from the other games.

... plus you can play as Majima.

Akiyama is the best character in the series that wasn't in the first game.

You... I like you. Akiyama Shun is best chara.

I miss Tanimura but shit Shinada just gives no fucks. That guy's side story was... damn.

I'm secretly hoping for more school delinquent spinoffs for console.

Well, if you want to outright spoil it, just watch this. Essentially, it's just a bunch of scenes (ranging from the entire series) mixed in between the credit roll with really fucking awesome music. Almost brought me to tears back in the day, for real yo.

I imagine it's not so much "Is this content really that important to me?" It's "They took shit out for no reason, that's really dumb, I'm not going to buy this for $60." It's not the value of the content that they cut that's important, but the value of act of cutting that you need to consider.

I didn't buy Dragon Quest IV DS because they removed party chat. They simply didn't want to localize that part and didn't think anyone would care, but to me, removing things like that means I'm getting less than other people and that fucking sucks.

Yes congrats to everyone waited, finally we are going to play Yakuza 5 being patient and not playing the JP version has paid off.

I knew sega would come around for the fans so thank you sega for not letting your fans down.

Looking back was that a bad decision? They pretty much kept everything in Yakuza 4 and likely increased the localization cost by a lot. Even Atlus cut of the mahjong mini game in their games. Did they actually gain any sales by not removing stuff in Yakuza 4? Or is another case of vocal minority on the internet making a lot of noise.

No. Here's a list of what got cut.

Its a real pain that Sega cut so much. I replayed 3 this year but played my Japanese copy instead. Some of those cuts felt pretty substantial to me (in my opinion).
The hostess stuff was gutted pretty bad, the way they handled the girls in the English version was really bad.
The hostess management stuff is really fun, and pretty in depth so it was a pity that they just cut that bit out completely along side the hostesses.
While I hated the number of side missions that got cut, I was mainly pissed off at them cutting not one, but two Mizuki/Akimoto side missions which follow on from Yakuza 2 (I guess they were cut due to the whole
incest thing

The only things I didn't miss in the English version were Shogi (because I just don't like that game what so ever no matter how hard I try) and Answer X Answer because I'm thick when it comes to trivia games.

we're looking at a small percentage of a small niche audience being vocal. I don't understand shogi and I can only win mahjong by blind luck. The massage minigame is dumb as hell. a lot of the cut stuff wasn't a huge loss for western audiences except those who view it as a value proposition I guess.

again, I wish we got all the sidequests and the hostess stuff, but that is actual content.

But the way I look at it is, we're very lucky we got those games at all; if they had to cut some corners to save time and money just to get us 80-90%+ of the full experience, then so be it.

Speaking of cuts, I wonder if Taiko is going to make it intact here.

I forget what songs are on the abridged list in the game, but I imagine there might be some licensing issues.

This started off as a discussion of why sales declined and I stand by the cuts being one of the reasons. It tells people "Don't buy this for full price, we're not giving you everything." You can say it's a necessary compromise, but even if you don't think everyone cared about the content, that doesn't mean they're willing to ignore things being removed and sold for full price.

I feel like that could go one of two ways based on the following:

- Japan is much more liberal with licensing songs to media than western labels/groups are

- The Japanese music industry is idiotic and 15 years behind the times in regards to how their music is handled outside of their own borders.

So depending on which one takes precedence in this situation...

But the numbers didn't reflect that. Yakuza 3 outsold Yakuza 4 by a lot. Sure they lost some sales but were they even people who would brought the game in the first place?

Im a terrible person I love Y4, its my first platinum and I wanted Y5 over a year ago but now I feel nothing for it. Give me Y0, I wanna experience Yakuza 80's style. Please guys, buy two copies each so I can get my wish.

Dead Souls may have its flaws but majima's lines in this game are ACE. One scene I remember has a henchman be surprised that Majima was able to take on the zombies and monsters by himself to which Majima replies "Bitch please, look who you're talking to".

Majima da best.

Eventually irrelevant because Zero.

WHY WOULD NO ONE WANT YAKUZA ZERO AFTER WATCHING THAT?!

it's difficult to put into words how much i'm looking forward to roller disco majima

it kills me because the home systems the Taiko no Tatsujin games are on are ones that are region locked.

come on Namco. PS4, bros.

Yeah, I'd have been on both Wii U Taiko games day 1 were it not for region lock. Been having to get my console Taiko fill by continuing to play the Wii ones, and keeping up with new songs via the 3DS games.

Getting Daigo to dress up like a woman and act like a couple with Majima to draw out zombies was pretty funny haha

Yes. Yakuza games as awesome as they are don't change much from game to game especially in terms of gameplay. I will catch up on the story through in game cutscene viewer or youtube but have no feeling towards playing it. Now I just really want Yakuza 0 so I hope we get it within a year of its Japanese release. Besides, the idea of gaming on the PS3 again doesn't appeal to me.
