YAKUZA 5 LOCALIZED FOR PS3

Will I miss loads of stuff if I start at 4?

There are pretty comprehensive recaps in each game for past ones, but yes, you will miss a metric ton of awesome stuff. If you can wait to play 5, try starting from the first.

Don't get me wrong the game looks amazing but just once I'd like to see spoken English in one of them.

Play the localized Yakuza 1 and then realize you don't want an English dub

Why?

Not trying to sound like a dick (I'm exhausted and can't sleep) but the entire charm of this series is how indelibly and utterly Japanese it all is. You lose a lot of the magic if you dub it instead of sub it.

I have forgotten a lot of the sub-stories in 1-2, but I can't go back and play them now. The combat holds up but the game around it just doesn't play very well anymore, IMO.

I enjoyed the Yakuza series, but i realize I forced myself to finish each previous entry when the new one would release. But every time I finished one I was blown away by the experience and immediately jumped into the next.

I never got past Yakuza 3... so I doubt I'll get around to enjoying this one.

Honestly, if I get myself to turn on my PS3 to play Lightning Returns at this point, I'll be amazed.

As much as I want to start with the first game, I don't have a ton of time that I wish to start there. I may have to jump on Yakuza 4 and watch recaps. Are there any other good sources to read the summary of the previous titles? I watched a little bit of my friend's Yakuza 3 playthrough and it's definitely amazing.

It's tough, I am always on my PS3 and struggled to start LR. I think once you get through the first chapter, the game gets a whole lot better. People say abuse the hell out of Chronostasis which seems almost impossible in the beginning but it's bc there aren't many areas to find enemies to gather up EP. Well, idk what kept you from playing, but the hide-and-go-seek mission plus the was so annoying. I suggest you just push through and ignore side missions in the beginning.

I highly recommend the gaffer made Your Next Favorite video about the Yakuza series

That's the best entry point.
The characters and their stories are amazing. Besides, as everybody else says, there's a Theatre Menu with recaps of all the previous games.

Catching up on the Yakuza franchise is a million times easier than on Kingdom Hearts or Metal Gear Solid

Since the localization was announced, I have had a few occasions where I needed to cheer myself up, so I revisit this thread and start reading it all over again, post by post. Sony / Sega have earned so much good will from me here.

I know that as soon as I complete this game, I will be aching (badly) for Ishin or Zero, but right now I can't help but smile. We're playing Yakuza 5.

Michael madsen, Eliza dushku say you're wrong.

That was a great dub. For a crappy dub play any of the dynasty warriors games.

This isn't really true anymore at all. Post-3 the DW games have had decent to good dubs. Hell, these days they use the same voice actors that 90% of other dubbed games use.

Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssss.
Imagine if during E3 they announce the game becomes available for download lol.

That could be a nice cute little nod to SEGA's Saturn launch

Sony is sqeezing blood from a stone with this localization, satisfying collectors is probably not much of a priority.

Collectors editions have a much higher margin of profit, the extra money they make from CE/LE sales is pretty much what keeps small localisers like NISA going. Any game that's niche but has a hardcore group of fans should be doing this

OK a quick question for a Yakuza newbe. I REALLY want to get into this series. I read that there is a Japanese Yakuza 1 & 2 import. Does anyone know if this import has English text so someone who doesn't know Japanese can play and follow the story? Should I just try to buy the PS2 versions?

If you just want the story, Yakuza 4 has an hour long recap of games 1-3.

No English text on any of the import Yakuza games, if you want to play them in English you'll have to track down the English releases I'm afraid (unfortunately the HD collection never got released outside of Japan)

Always hearing good things about the series. For someone who hasn't touched the games yet, where should I begin?

I'd say by release order. People may tell you to play 3 and watch the recap videos but it's nothing compared to actually playing the games

If this does well enough to get Ishin here, and it had damn well better or I BLAME YOU GAF, I will cry.

I imagine they'll skip Ishin and just localize Zero next if they're going to do more. We didn't get Kenzan, either. They probably think the historical games are too Japanese to resonate with western audiences, or something.

Yeah which is why people want the HD collection to be localized so that you could play Y1 and Y2 and not miss out on anything.

With that, Kenzan, Isshin and Zero on my plate. (I did play up to early chapter 5 in japanese of 5), I've got a lot of of RGG on my plate this summer. Kind of glad not much is coming out that I need to play during summer.

I don't want Troy Baker putting his mitts on anything Yakuza, thanks.

I doubt Ishin or Kenzan will ever show up here. MAYBE 0 if we're well behaved.

there is nothing that sucks about Y5 being localized.
Yes, there is, the fact that it's not getting a physical release sucks, because it means I can't play it.

That seems like a personal thing. It's not like digital is hindering you unless you don't have hard drive space, in which case you can upgrade it.

That whole argument, in my opinion, is stupid. "Oh digital only game? WELL DARN! I wanted to play it but since it's digital only I guess I won't support a game I been waiting for and a franchise that needs help in countries outside Japan. I'll be stubborn and not get it"

That's your own fault if you don't wanna get it digital for any reason. It could very well possibly be that this is the only way sega will release it outside Japan.
