Yakuza KIWAMI |OT| Translator's Note: "KIWAMI" means "EXTREME"

I know it's kinda covered in the OT but what are people's opinions on the playing order in regards to this and 0. Obviously 0 came later so it was designed to be played after 1 but now they're both out on PS4, I was wondering if I should just play 0 then 1.

Hardcore Yakuza fans, what say you?
Play 0 then play Kiwami.

Kiwami is a sequel to 0 but 0 has a lot of references to later titles. Buy them both and play them in whatever order you like but 0 has a lot more content.

YOOOOOO Kiryu goddam!!
There is a lot of sick lines in this game but for some reason that one really stood out to me.

The overall story in each game is it's own thing, so it doesn't really matter from that standpoint. 0 introduces a couple of characters that reappear in Kiwami, but then again, they were first introduced in 1 so it might not seem like much of an issue...but 0 actually has some added suspense if you haven't played any of the other games before, because you won't know which characters inevitably have to survive by the end.

Also, Kiwami adds a couple of new substories with substory characters from 0.

Just to add to the replies above - official Sega response is -

Guys, the Y0 / Kiwami "which do I play first?" argument is silly.

There are narrative details and substories that have been added to Kiwami that follow up on things that happened in Y0. They aren't written in a "prequel" way in Y0, they are written in a sequel way in Kiwami. In other words, Y0 was the prequel to Y1, but Kiwami is sort of a sequel to Y0.

The official SEGA recommendation is you play Y0 then Kiwami.

Edit: And when I say silly, I mean "amusing".

does this not have a video recap of 0? is this the first game to not have a recap of the pervious game?

Y5 doesn't have a recap of the previous titles.

5 didn't have one either. It's kinda moot because aside from reappearing characters 0's and Kiwami's stories are entirely seperate, so why spoil yourself on 0 with a pointless recap if you could still play it yourself later?

Play Zero then Kiwami.

Zero is a better starting point and overall the better game. Kiwami is as much of a sequel to Zero as it is a remake of Yakuza 1. They have added stuff to Kiwami to take into account the events of Zero. The callbacks to Zero are really nice and the development of characters/relationships are much more powerful if you first play Zero then Kiwami.

Edit: If any mod is reading this, just do me a solid please and give me "Play Yakuza 0 first" tag. That'll save us a lot of time lol

Good lord
Shimano
took forever to beat.

Started doing some of the side-stories and already have some good ones lol

This game is hard. I've only played 0, 4, and 5 but this seems way harder than those. Some of these fights take forever.

Might drop the difficulty down

This man deserves it.

Gotta give some random user a "Play Yakuza KIWAMI first" tag too just for laughs then.

But yeah, game's surprisingly hard. I'm playing on easy and I have to admit I had some trouble with
Shimano.
Didn't enjoy the fight. Dreading the Majima fights lol.

Play 0 first, then Kiwami. The main reason is that, there are now references to side quest characters in Kiwami that were originally introduced in Yakuza 0.

Picked it up today, loving it as usual.

Have played 4, 5, and 0. Never played 1-3. Will pick up 6 and Kiwami 2 next year..<3

Easily in my top 10.

Any tips for the Chapter 3
Shimano
fight? I'm in the middle of it and I'm pretty sure he got a bunch of health restored somehow

The problem with this fight is that it takes way too long if you haven't purchased the corresponding Kiwami move in the Soul board. If you don't manage to do it in time when he has that aura, he recovers a bunch of health.

What I did was just use Rush style to hit him after all his attacks to slowly lower his health, and use those two pillars for heat actions when I had enough heat. That aside tho... yeah, not much you can do about it, it's just a slog.

Man, nobody takes any damage compared to 0. I didn't learn the three kiwami moves before the
shimano fight
either.

Majima decided to pick a fight while I was sitting at the save booth planning to stop for the day. 👀

Yeah, that fixes a bug from one of the early cutscenes. Thankfully someone noticed it from streams before the game was out and then brought it to the attention of Scott Strichart.

Oh, nice that they were able to get out a patch so fast.

Also a nice gesture to give Yakuza 0 players a bonus item.

Man I dunno how to feel about this remixed music. I think the original tracks were better. =|

That said, Ch 3
Shimano
is a carbon copy of Mr. Shakedown lmao. Fun stuff.

Why do they still have phonebooths you can save at if you can save anytime from the menu? Just something they didn't bother to remove when they reused the Zero engine?

I played Zero on Hard and I'm playing this one on Hard as well.

Kiwami is way tougher than Zero.

Good to know!

Zero wasn't very hard on 'hard'.

You can save from the menu? That's amazing!

Stupid reason - but maybe fans who want to play it the old fashioned way can still do so? :p probably not.

Just started an played a bit of Kiwami yesterday. I played Zero before, and I'm really looking forward to playing through it. One question though:

What the hell happened to Majima between Zero and Kiwami? He acts completely different. Will this be part of the story?

He met Nishitani in 0. I think that's all the reasoning they give for his change.
Maybe Kiwami 2's additions will address this further

Definitely quite a bit harder.

I have a thing for playing every Yakuza game on hard and never using a single item lol, and this is giving me much more trouble. Love it.

How do you do that special finisher? I feel like I missed something, and I can't find the explanation in the menus. I switch to the corresponding color, but no prompt comes up even with a full heat gauge.

Chiming in from someone who just played 0. It's really helpful knowing who the key characters are. I could imagine jumping into Kiwami and not caring about significant events cause I don't know if the people involved are important or not.

Play 0 first of you haven't played any Yakuza games.

Just in chapter 1 but I think the game looks fantastic. The bright lights reflecting off of the rain puddles, the character's faces, plus 60 fps; I dunno, game just looks and feels great.

I bought the game even though I didn't finish Yakuza 0 yet. Steelbook looks really nice, looking forward to playing it when I'm done with 0.

You can't just bring this up without elaborating.

Also, I'm the guy who'll still use the phonebooths to save. My OCD commands it. In Nier Automata I never saved from the field either, always used the stations.

The (chapter 3 spoiler)
Shimano
boss fight was soooooooooooo tedious, my god.

I absolutely hate it when they include health regen in boss fights.

Compared to 0 at least, which I think had the best boss fights, I remember that Yakuza 4 also had some shitty encounters (or maybe I sucked at it)... I just couldn't find any fun in them.

Yeah, after playing the some of the way through Ch. 1 tonight, I can't imagine someone starting with Kiwami first. It really just drops you in with hardly any explanation of who these people are. Zero does such a better job of introducing the characters.

I would also like to know this. I've never seen a prompt come up once despite changing to the corresponding style.
