Yakuza KIWAMI |OT| Translator's Note: "KIWAMI" means "EXTREME"

You can't just bring this up without elaborating.

Also, I'm the guy who'll still use the phonebooths to save. My OCD commands it. In Nier Automata I never saved from the field either, always used the stations.
Well, I didn't wanna spoil that scene for people who haven't played Y1 before, but this is the problem that was found:

Which was fixed in the 1.05 version:

Did any of you sing in the karaoke bar yet? FUCKING HELL, those first 2 songs... THE FEELS, the motherfuckin' FEELS.

I highly recommend doing that, but only if you've played 0.

So, without the item, how do you go about starting a sub story, just by talking to someone? I notice you can only talk to people with a speech bubble over them.

The first ones become available in chapter 2 around the time when you are looking for info on Tachibana real estate. Most of them in that section are triggered automatically when you run by them. Just run around town for a bit and you'll start encountering them.

Majima everywhere is hilarious but ultimately so sad.

I'm wrecking the poor guy so badly, I feel bad for him.

I feel he will get stronger fast but for now, holy shit, the beating he's eating lol

I got to the bossfight in Chapter 3, and it took me something like 10 minutes to win. Is it possible to have the Kiwami moves yet to stop the healing process the bosses do?

I'm finding the combat, in general, to be way harder than Yakuza 0.

Oh man. The Shimano fight is awful. It's just Mr. Shakedown's moveset but does less damage and he has a massive health bar.

Took me ~10 mins. Last half he would not stop grabbing me even in the middle of a combo. Not very fun but with Rush he basically never hit me.

Same. Although I will say it's easy to become overpowered in 0 fairly early into the game because of the amount of money you can get from sidequests or even the regular plot.

I really dig that addition to the combat system.

That beast combo that ends with the enemy in the air, followed up by the aerial heat move = awesome. Cool vid :)

Thanks. :) I thought that up today and tried it, worked flawlessly. I'm probably gonna make a gif out of that one, it really shows how flexible the combat system is thanks to the smooth style switching.

I'm not finding the combat to be harder, but the first three chapters the combat felt frustrating compared to playing Yakuza 1 on the PS2 where you only unlocked techniques for one style, and later abilities make the random street battles last like 5 seconds. While I like the multiple styles Zero felt like it was much better balanced towards them.

That and I feel bad for people coming into this without playing Zero as there's no trainers for the different styles here and Zero had a much better explanation of the differences and abilities of each.

Is there any way to get rid of the "you can upgrade abilities" message everytime you open the menu with experience points?

There are heat moves specifically to interrupt the regen of bosses. You'll have to unlock them on the skill tree for specific styles. They then appear as special icons where the heat triangle is, in the color of the style you need to switch to to perform that move. You can also stop those moments with regular weapon heat actions. Many seem to be having this problem right now so spare yourself from the heartburn.

That's a pretty weird bug. Aren't the cutscenes pre-rendered?
Yeah, I always thought they were pre-rendered as well. Maybe they messed up the scene when they were adding subs to it? Idk if that makes any sense.

I can't wait until I have access to all the moves in this game. The fights are gonna be glorious.

im finding the editing in the cutscenes to be kind of weird. the 1:1 remake of these is off-putting esp coming off of 0 which demonstrated how much better they've gotten with scene direction.

that said, i wish this had the option for the original soundtrack instead of the remixed one--it's a lot moodier and ominous

Other than deciding on a whim there is no logical reason to start with Kiwami instead of Zero.
I currently have to use remote play on Vita since i have no other screen to connect my PS4 to but i'll get to the big scenes in time on a proper screen soon enough.

Nishida sent me mail about an hostess that keep requesting "kiryu-san" at Shine Club...

The following is pure speculation:

Is your Majima Everywhere progress bar filled? If so, have you done the "rank up" battle yet? I'm wondering if the system only allows one non random street battle Majima appearance at a time.

Again, this could simply be tales from my ass... haven't tested it.

Never thought Zero newcomers would be that confused by Majima's shift in personality... I mean yeah it's drastic, but I thought the ending of Zero gave away enough to make speculation relatively easy, even without knowing of classic Majima beforehand. At this point an explanation will have to be included in a FAQ, haha.

Anyway, went to sleep late last night because I got addicted to the sub stories as usual. Admittedly I skipped many of these in the original, but revisiting the ones I know with the Zero format has been a blast! Especially the ones where they try to con Kazuma lmao.

I love this series so much.

It's cheaper so if you're on the fence it makes sense to purchase the cheaper game to see if you're even interested. There are some game design that might feel like a step back from Zero, like having one city, one character, less mini-games, etc which might feel like a step back from Zero instead of playing this game first which would make Zero feel like a natural progression for many systems.

However Kiwami added scenes which make more sense when coming from Zero and playing Zero first is a much better introduction to many characters, like Majima, plus the stuff it carries over from Zero it doesn't explain well.

I can see plus/minuses for either way. I mean I played the first game a long time before Zero and was just fine, but I'm not so sure I'd have liked Majima as a character if the first introduction was fighting him all the time.

To give an update I just got access to majima again in chapter 11 I haven't had the chance to progress since chapter 4. So for anyone that doesn't want to go 7 chapters without progressing in dragon abilities outside komaki make sure to do a lot of majima stuff in chapter 4 if you want to be safe.

I'm fighting with him right now in chapter 5.

I don't know, his ending in Zero seemed a bit forced to me. Just one short scene that was supposed to explain his mental shift? I think that's why people are finding his Kiwami persona hard to understand. The writers didn't really take us on his emotional/mental journey to Crazytown. I'm only on Ch. 1, but so far Nishiki's transformation seems more understandable. Even in Zero you could see the seeds in his personality of what happened to him in Kiwami.

Here's my explanation for Majima: the dude has been wearing the same jacket for 10 years. That'll do things to a man.

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Man, it's good to be back. I mean, it's not like 0 was even that long ago, but playing this just makes me realize how much I missed Yakuza.

Also kind of weird to play through what is clearly Yakuza 1, but not have the shitty OG Kazuma character design or the crappy combat.

I'm really digging the spine on it. I wish every game had that font.

I hate steelbooks, no matter how fancy they look. I bought it but I'm giving it away as a birthday gift. What's the deal with the spine?

I gotta go to Best Buy one of these days, they got the regular cover in stock hopefully

Here's my explanation for Majima: the dude has been wearing the same jacket for 10 years. That'll do things to a man.

But Majima's shift is a result of all the stuff he's had to put up with before and during Zero, the scene where he changes his look is just symbolic.

The guy is clearly a bit soft and caring, which is why he's constantly being manipulated and treated like a dog before Yakuza 1, so he takes that new persona (probably inspired by Nishitani) to get respect and fear out of his fellow yakuzas and never be through any of that again. He even gets new dialog in Kiwami where he preaches on Kazuma about how being such a good guy will make him miserable, clearly talking on personal experience.

He didn't really become crazy, but rather he forces himself to be, I guess. There's even more proof of this if you've played later games, as he acts similar to how he does in 0 when he's with people he trusts.

I mean yeah, it could have definitely been more explicit, but I still think it's fairly self explanatory for what it is.

0 was my first Yakuza and meeting Nishitani explained a lot about why the Majima I know in 0 isnt the crazy character everyone is guaranteeing me I'll love on forums. Also there is the fact that the ending
is pretty much him being let out of a prison
They should have done more to plant the seeds for his and Kiryu's rivalry though.

They're not really rivals though. Majima in Kiwami is just trying to bring the Dragon out of Kiryu because he wants Kiryu to be at his best.

This is one of the best explanation i've saw on the personlity shift of majima, make totaly sense whit the flashback scene thing in Zero. Y5 spoiler :
From my memory he is pretty soft in Y4-Y5, a little less on the crazy side, but at the same time we don't see him a lot.

Lol,
yeah, I felt the same too. At this point, if they don't kill Kazama off, I'm wondering if it's going to be a running gag throughout the series. "In Yakuza 2, Kazama's on vacation, so you have to sort things out yourself! In Yakuza 3, Kazama's really busy right now, so you can't bother him!"

This Y3 slander is too much! Putting personal feelings aside, Y3 is no more optional than any of the titles, including even the first one. Their main storylines are all very separate, but they all also lead into their sequel.

Y3 has much more going on than just the orphanage, which is itself is as important piece of character development as anything that's happened to Kiryu since Y1 (having not played 6). Just to throw out some things Y3 sets up: it wraps up a certain "loose end" from Y2, Majima turning from goofy rival into mildly more serious pillar, something "important" happens with one of Kiryu's closest Yakuza allies (who's prevalent in Y0), one half of the character arc of one of Yakuza 4's major characters is in the previous game, and, although this is fairly arguable, the game actually ends on a cliffhanger which is picked up on directly in Yakuza 4. The timeskip that occurs in Y3 does a lot in terms of setting up the series's setting for the following games. You can skip it / watch a summary of it and turn out relatively fine, but like I said, it's not any more true for Y3 than the other games. (Y0 is probably the most skippable game if you also skip out on Kiwami, but I wouldn't recommend it since I think it's probably the best Yakuza game you can play, in the West, anyway.)

On the other hand, there is something tricky people don't like to bring up when it comes to the Yakuza play order (because they, understandably, don't want to scare new players)...

While the main storylines are fairly separate and allow players to get by with the often included recaps, this is less often the case with side quests. The real complexity of Yakuza's setting, built up over hundreds of side-quests, shows up there and the games do almost nothing to ease new players in. Main or side plots can end up being central to fully understanding side-quests in follow up games. IIRC, some of the cut characters/quests from the localized Yakuza 3 ends up getting referenced in 4 or something, so there's that wrinkle too.

While the beginning of Yakuza 3 is notoriously slow, I don't think it's anything a (non-rose tinted) Shenmue fan couldn't survive. At the time, I found it to be a nice change of pace from the previous two games.
I don't hate Yakuza 3 either, but my main argument for skipping it at the moment is basically:

4's main plot doesn't really build off of 3 that much, and you're spending most of the game with the other characters anyway. As you said, it's putting a cap on the last game.

The problem eventually also becomes "How many games should people have to play in a row to experience later entries?"

6 is going to need 5 since it's probably as direct as a sequel can be, and you'll have 2 other characters you know nothing about if you play 5 without playing 4, while for the most part 4 contextualizes everything you need to know in the game or you can infer it yourself by the way characters act. 0 and then Kiwami are good jumping in points without needing to play the other games, but then if they decide they want to play 6 they might be completely lost trying to play it without playing any of the others.

Just started playing last night. Felt good coming back to Yakuza after having a blast with 0 back in March. Just hope I don't get burnt out since these are long games.

Nothing much, it's just slick and I like the font. Text is metallic silver and shiny:

How do you do the action move things when the enemy is glowing a certain colour? So if he's glowing pink I switch to Rush mode, but then what? I completely forgot what I was told during the tutorial and I've missed so many of them since.

End of Chapter 3:
That Shimano fight is boring as FUCK!
