Yooka-Laylee |OT| Reptile Rolling in the 90’s

All I ever wanted out of this was a new game in the style of Banjo and that's exactly what it is. It's got it's problems but after two hours of playing I can say I love this. Got it for xbox one but will double dip on the switch.

Absolutely loving the game. Surprised it's getting some of the hate it's gotten.

Camera is a bit wonky, but aside from that I have little other complaints.

The first boss fight wasn't hard. Just take it slower and treat it as jumping over each thing, no need to go full pelt and try and make big jumps.

The rolling move should be treated like that more I found, just stop, you won't slip back down on a slope so there's no need to try and do whole sections with constant forward movement.

Only about 45 minutes in but I'm liking it so far. It's not without its problems. I think Yooka moves way too fast, hits feel pretty empty and the camera ain't great. But it's giving me what I looked for which is a throw back to the Rare days, even if it's not going to land with me in the same way Banjo did years ago.

I'll push on further tomorrow to get a better feel for it, but I really dig the opening level.

Yep. That boss fight basically teaches you how the roll move works. Once you figure that out, it's a piece of cake.

Got about 2 hours in and reached the 2nd world, haven't expanded the first one yet. Thoughts INCOMING!

• Controlling Yooka and Laylee is great. I like how you can use the air attack as a sort of makeshift glide before you actually get that move if you're skilled enough. I also enjoy the slightly dodgy platforming where you feel like you shouldn't really be able to get somewhere but oh look, you can. And sometimes you even find a reward for doing it!

• The hub seems a bit lame so far, dingy lighting and boxy hallways everywhere. Hoping it gets more interesting.

• The first Rextro minigame is pretty weak. It only took me 3 tries total to get both Pagies, but they definitely could have tightened the controls there.

• I like the quiz but it's poorly integrated. I didn't even expand the first world and I was getting asked questions about characters that I hadn't yet seen (luckily for me I've been hungrily devouring every piece of Y-L media I could get my hands on so I blew through it anyway). It's hardly the player's choice to expand or explore if you're going to punish them for not expanding.

Other than those negatives, this game is EXCELLENT so far! If I wasn't in desperate need of sleep right now I'd be playing this until morning.

Am I right looking at the store pages and seeing it is available right now on the PSN and XBL stores?

Wow, they really are being jerks by making sure they hit consoles at midnight or early then turn around and tell PC players to wait until normal Steam hours... if not a bit later? It's not the biggest of deals admittedly but it's irritating as an American and I imagine kind of insulting to anyone in Europe, when it's not as if this seems like an issue at all for America to have an earlier launch anyway.

EDIT: And while there might be a sense of entitlement born from reliably getting it a bit earlier on PC... part of that did have to do with console launches being messier in general and Valve making it reasonably painless to launch on demand. And hell, ideally no one gets left behind within reason.

Guys I... I am getting motion sickness and I'm only just past the Snake at the beginning like 5mins in?!

I tried putting camera sensitivity to low, and it's a bit better.

I don't think I remember any game doing this to me? The camera just seems to jump around randomly too much or something.

It looks gorgeous on the PS4 but I don't know if I can even play it now =(

Game is 40 hours long? Geez. Banjo-Kazooie could be completed in like 6-7 hours.

My recent Project 64 playthrough:

The last time I played through Banjo-Tooie on XBLA last year, it took about 14 hours, I think.

Banjo Kazooie took me more than 40 to 100% the first time. Yooka could take me more because I tend to walk around places I've visited a lot just to be sure I haven't missed anything.

haha, it happens ^^.

I couldn't win the race either btw. No idea if there's a special trick or if you have to upgrade your abilities first.

I love it though because there's a reason to come back to these levels / worlds.

Not sure if anybody else already answered you because this was a few pages ago now (no pun intended), but you have to collect the purple butterflies as you race the cloud to keep refilling your stamina bar.

Loving the game so far. Found 18/25 pagies for the 1st world, and all but about 20 quills.

I apologize if this is a "Doy" teir question, but how do you move on to the next world? I'm in the hub and even activated the honeycomb things near World 1's enterance, but I just can't move forward in the tower.

I've been feeling a bit of motion sickness as well, definitely something to do with the camera motion, because it tends to happen while I'm manipulating the right stick (PS4 user here as well)

Keep exploring the hub. The honeycomb pillars you activated act as a shortcut to where the next world book sits.

Shamelessly stolen from the screenshot thread:

Looks absolutely gorgeous even at 1080p. Seems to be using some pretty good temporal AA.

Also, Jim Sterling smoking some pretty good shit as usual, this game deserves a 5 for the art style alone.

Yeah same I'm used to guiding the camera with the right stick but it's kinda jerky and started getting to me, hopefully it's just cus I'm tired I quit for tonight and will try more tomorrow.

So the game's out for everybody except people who preordered it on steam? Well, I'm at work for the next 6 hours but even then I'll have to wait 2 harrowing hours till it unlocks. -_-

Did they do a stacked release kind of thing? Or are you guys just backers who get to play it early?

Nobody* with the PC version can play the game just yet. Backers were lumped in with those who pre-purchased.

* Reviewers/streamers aside.

Played this a couple of hours yesterday and LOVED it. I was missing this type of game for a long time now and this game is exactly what I wished. Fun to play, don't care about reviews!

Ugh hype deflated :(

Well, I think Grant's level music in Y-K is significantly better than most of David Wise's compositions. David has been kinda lazy here. It's like he chose whatever outtakes from DK:Tropical Freeze he could fish out of the garbage bin. One of the later minekart tracks rules, though.

I'm almost certain I haven't experienced motion sickness in a game before but I am with this.

It's a shame as I'm really enjoying it (X1 by the way).

Well, in that case, you could argue that Grant was "lazy" with the soundtrack as well then. It's like he chose "outtakes" from Nuts & Bolts.....

But seriously though, a lot of the music in this game sounds like something straight out of N&B, and I assume those are Grant's tracks that do.

Not to bash on any of the composers for this game, of course. :p

I was on the fence about the game but the comments in this thread have sold me. I'm really looking forward to the game. I could do with a nice bright and cheerful game so I hope it doesn't disappoint at least on the gameplay front.

I do wish there was either a mini-map or an overhead map available. The touch button on PS4 doesn't do anything does it?

I don't know about the touch button, but there certainly is no map in Yooka-Laylee. Also, I think it is a good thing.

Add my to the list of people that gets motion sickness from the Camera.

I'm not sure the first boss is hard but it does get a tad annoying since you can hit multiple logs sliding down should you fail to reach the top and the health butterflies stop respawning even after you die.

Oh my goooooddddddd the noise when anyone speaks. Please let me skip it.

Edit: You can skip it when not in a cutscene. Thank Christ.

The GB Quick Look is fucking embarrassing, holy shit.

I don't think it's embarassing, but it's a great example of why a lot of people probably don't like the game as much as people who like this style of game. A lot of it is learning how to master your character's movement and understand inertia and the physics. Also, it's a bit surprising to hear that people complain about difficult mini-games and item collecting...that's exactly what a lot of Banjo was.

This game looks exactly like what the Kickstarter was kickstarted for...which should be applauded. It's delivering on what was expected, but people have such a grandiose nostalgic opinion of "classic Rare", but they are bringing in expectations of something like Mario Galaxy or something more modern.

It's unfortunate, but every time I see the game (even levels that are considered "too empty") I get excited and want to play.

Hope the Switch port is good.

I checked my backerkit this morning and I've realised that I've accidentally typed one letter incorrectly in my postcode 😢😢

This probably explains why my physical backer copy hasn't turned up yet. I'm devastated. If it doesn't arrive tonight..well I don't know what to do, email Playtonic I suppose.

The letter I got wrong is the very last one, and it's only down the road from where I live, I thought they might have noticed my mistake but nm.

I would really like to play this on a console, but ugh...no 60fps makes PC version tempting. But then again, I'd also like to get a physical copy

Same, same...

I ended up going for PC with using an Xbox controller.

Thinking about maybe getting a Steam Link too basically giving me 60fps on the TV.

It's just another example why you shouldn't listen to reviews anymore. Reviewers are just bad at playing games. They want them as easy as possible nowadays.
The only exception is Dark Souls and I really doubt many reviewers finished the Souls games.

I totally agree! I watched the quick look and had a blast seeing them struggle and figure out the controls. Was weird called the boss a bad boss. Then finally admits to finding it rewarding to have beat.

I just played banjo kazooie and got to the second level for the first time in decades waiting for this to launch. Works great in retroarch on android (using a ps4 controller and mount - btw even ps1 and psp games work, added all the stuff I was missing on vita). I plan on streaming yooka from pc to this too.

Yookalaylee looks extremely faithful. The camera in banjo... got to be patient with it :)

Can't wait for yooka. 7 hours now I think.

Played a bit earlier.
The camera has issues, but the game is fun. I wanted a Banjo Kazooie game, and that's what they delivered so I'm satisfied.

It took me an hour to find the snake in the first level to purchase some upgrades. I just wish there was a map so it's a bit easier to find characters / challenges, y'know?

It's part of the magic but I get it that for people who don't like to waste a lot of time it would certainly help. Banjo Tooie would be a better experience with a map for sure.

Well I understand this, totally, but the thing with collectathon platformers is that working out the layout of the maps in your mind is an important part of the experience. When compared to open world games, this is made possible by much smaller, individual worlds, when compared to Metroid-style games, a much lower map complexity is enabling this design approach.

I think part of the game would actually suffer from offering a map.

EDIT @Ramparter: I agree on Tooie, but this really is a case of much more complex map layouts and more complicated, non-local missions. Tooie is a beautiful construction, but it suffers in the moment-to-moment gameplay from its sheer complexity.

Just ordered this for PS4. Couldn't hold out. I love Banjo. Most of the complaints in reviews (performance excepted) are pretty much exactly what I want.

Kind of bullshit that Kickstarter backers who went for the PC version have to wait until it officially released.

Couldn't they have given out reviewer/ streamer codes for those that backed it?

It acts as a second racetrack for the small cloud by the start of the level. Have fun rolling on ice!

If you take the shortcuts perfectly on each lap you have about 20 seconds to spare.

Oh yeah...the shortcuts....ummm...I might try this later :P

Holy shit @ the mine cart mini game. This is Donkey Kong :D ...and Wise

I just love this game!

Absolutely. In fact, the Product Keys documentation categorically says as much:

Providing backers with beta testing keys prior to release is also OK, but only backers should receive those keys--they shouldn't be sold outside of the crowdfunding campaign unless your beta is also available for sale via Steam.

Note that "beta testing keys" doesn't literally mean "keys to be used for beta testing" but rather refers to the "[app name] for Beta Testing" package that Steam automagically generates when an app is uploaded.

The only exception is Dark Souls and I really doubt many reviewers finished the Souls games.

I found it especially weird when reviewers were claiming that Breath of the Wild is a super challenging game but the penalty for death is non-existent, most encounters are optional, and fury attacks are OP. There are so many advantages for the player in that game.
