Yooka-Laylee |OT| Reptile Rolling in the 90’s

So, uh, when is this game supposed to become disappointing? Because I'm two worlds in and I'm loving it so far. (Shitty quiz notwithstanding)

Well, he's right. (That vehicle from world 3 and some of Rextro's vehicle-based minigames are the exception). :D The controls are tight and responsive. Platforming is so easy in Yooka-Laylee!

He's not "right," you just happen to agree with him (despite listing some exceptions).

I happen to disagree; the controls didn't feel that tight to me when it comes to certain moves, and especially as it applies to vehicles and transformations. And especially not when compared to banjo-kazooie

It looks like you guys are having fun! I'm stuck waiting for the switch version. Do you have any tips and tricks?

Yoah...forget about it until you can play it. Replay the Banjo games or DK64. Hmmm. That's all I can think of now. I had the same problem with Breath of the Wild. Instead I played Persona 4, haha.

(I know that wasn't exactly your question ;D )

But yeah, most of us are having good fun, I think. <3
Kinda spoilery (only in terms of footage) review by the completionist. Just reposting it for the new page. It's possible to love the game, he feels just like me and many other players who scratch their hads because of the bad reviews.

The controls feel a little floaty. Almost like yooka needs longer legs.
I immediately knew Yooka felt like he was going to feel floaty when they show
Ed that Casino stage about 6(?) months ago. For some reason, to me Yooka never felt like his feet actually touched the ground.

This has probably been said but I couldn't believe the quiz section asked me how long I've been playing and 2 of the answers were 1 minute apart, who the hell thought that was a good idea? The correct answer was one of those 2 too.

I'm streaming it and it doesn't feel floaty.

It's the roll, mainly the turning circle - there's a bit of resistance to it like a tyre. Do circles round some enemies on the ground for a while to get a feel for it, it almost drifts when you're going faster.

I think they should make it easier to turn the slower you're going*.

The first boss got me really familiar with the way it works!

-Edit:
*Or maybe a toggle in the options.

Btw I'm liking how it plays with the roll on toggle.

Watched the completionist review, I'm really happy to see some positive reviews from influential reviewers! Then you look in the comments and people are accusing him of being contrarian, edgy, bitter. As if it were impossible to enjoy this game.

It's hard not to when you're high. Almost feels magical walking into a new level with the colour, models + animation and the music.

I bet kids would love it, though might not be able to finish it alone.

Guys, I'm at a Gamestop buying the physical version, but I've got no Internet until next week at home. What's the size of the day one patch? Thinking about using my phone as a workaround just for the update.

Has anyone here failed more than one or two times at any of the quizzes? I blew two of my three lives on the first qeustions and still got through. It wasn't that hard. Kazooie's quiz was harder in comparison.

In my world he's right. It's ok to disagree. ;D I think some of Kazooie's more challenging platform sequences would be super easy with Yooka because he controls so well and precise.

On Steam I think it just redownloads the game. I remember downloading 3.8 gigiabytes twice, once for preload and once for day one.

So everyone agrees that Glitterglaze Glacier is the best level, right? :P

I keep coming back here just for the music and overall atmosphere. It might even beat out Freezeezy Peak for me.

Scattered thoughts:

  • I really enjoyed the iceometric palace. Fun platforming challenges. It kinda reminded me of Super Mario Galaxy and the 2D sections it had. Again, I really appreciate this emphasis on platforming that Yooka Laylee has; it compares really favorably to Rare's N64 games. I think the ice boss was a step up from World 1 but it's a little lame since it's basically just like a moving target. Funny dialogue, though.
  • I really like World 5! Interesting transformation there, too. Beautiful level. Have yet to really do much in this one but looking forward to it.
  • I'm not sure how to feel about the casino. I think it is a little bland aesthetically, not unique enough to Capital B and his corporation. I do like that he pulled a King K. Rool and showed up in the level in a disguise. I think the gameplay gimmick is not that interesting. Just more collecting, basically. Not a fan of the slot machine ground pounding.I haven't expanded it yet so my thoughts may change. Helicopter is useful.
  • Now that I think I've seen all of Hivory Towers, it's definitely a step up from Gruntilda's lair. Very interesting hub. I think one of my favorite of any game I've played. It's unique and full of character. It's also fun to get through -- more good, fun, platforming. Doesn't really feel like a chore to me unlike Gruntilda's lair, Banjo Tooie's overworld, and Peach's Castle (SM64). Knocking over the books to hit the giant switch was weirdly satisfying.
  • Dr. Quack's quiz is too punishing and not that fun. That you can't skip the dialogue makes it even worse. How to improve it: less questions, more interesting questions that don't involve constantly checking how many items you've collected, more lives, and maybe a more unique gimmick. Maybe take a cue from Grunty's BT battle and actually make Dr Quack a recurring miniboss that sometimes interrupts the fight with a quiz. The quiz could have consequences for the fight as it did in Grunty's battle. I don't expect this to happen but it would be cool.
  • Kartos is not that fun. You should not be able to speed up or slow down. There's too many things on the track, too. Weird physics but might be more fun with less stuff to run into and at a uniform speed. I would prefer a focus on the mine cart jumping itself instead of collecting gems. Reminded me a little of DK64s minecarts (bad). Kartos is better but it's still problematic. Maybe cut down on the number of minigames in general and focus on just a few that really tie into the core gameplay.
  • I think the worlds are really fun to explore and have enough unique landmarks that allow you to quickly orient yourself. Good size, in my opinion. The only thing is that I think sometimes, cave entrances/exits can be confusing to keep track of. It might be heavy handed, but I'd appreciate something like a sign outside of every cave/opening to give me a hint as to what's inside.

  • Overall, really loving the game. Very pleased and hope they get to work on many more. I hope they listen to the criticism but also take a step back and appreciate they've made a real gem here. It's rough around the edges sometimes but this is a memorable, fun, game. A lot of good ideas.

Well, so far, my ranking goes:
Level 3
Level 1
Level 2
Level 4

I haven't played level 5 yet.

Glitterglaze is the worst (but still fine, overall). The cave sucked, the dark quiz sucked, the truck sucked, the arcade and karts were even worse than usual, and the boss was tedious and uninteresting. Each world has some bad pagies, but none came close to the concentration of them there.

My ranking so far: 1>4>3>>2

Dude, level 5 is awesome! To me it's the best of them all...It kinda feels like the most budget went into this one, haha. But really, I like the presentation, the music and the otherworldly feeling here. My ranking would be as follows:

Level 5
Level 1
Level 3
Level 2

I get where you're coming from, but I would take the quiz any day over the slot machines.
I will say that I fully expected to hate the casino level upon seeing reviews, but it's not nearly as bad as they've made it out to be.

I'm with you. That boss was just an enormous pain. I quite like the casino, myself. I'm trying to get the rest of the pagies in 2 now, but I'm having a hard time. None of my solutions have worked. I don't want to talk about what I'm facing though because I want to do this on my own :)

Wait, what boss are you guys talking about? The thing in
the boiler
? If anything I was a bit disappointed that he went down so easy :D Not super interesting but not grating either. You can hurt him a few times in a row with a single breath of fire. Took no damage. I wonder what that moving thing in the middle of the room was for, though. That irritated me for a moment.

Yeah, I had no idea what that fan was for, either.

You're better at this than I am. He was too fast moving for me. I didn't figure out until after that you could
break the ice in front of the torches with the sonar blast
. I don't know if that would have helped. It was so tedious wearing him down. At least the
INEPT
fight was thrilling.

I will say that the casino boss took me by surprise, but I kind of hated it and I never want to see another minecart again lol.

Maybe it helped that I beat Ys I (old action RPG) a few weeks ago. The final boss was a fucking pinball and you had to perfectly align your path to his and anticipate every move. I think with this boss here it's just about figuring out
the path and firing in that general direction so he moves through it.

You've played the game all the way up to World 4 despite considering it hot garbage made by talentless hacks, so they must be doing something right. Most people would stop playing a game they claim to hate so much.

1. I said the minecart sections are garbage.

2. I never said I "hate" the game.

3. I would play it all the way even if I did hate it because it's the spiritual successor to my favorite game of all time and I just need to see this through. I was expecting a rough ride from the very start. It ended up being a very poor game, all my pre-release concerns were confirmed and then some, but not once during my playthrough did I consider dropping it. That doesn't mean it's good.

I am looking forward to it, people who rate the levels similarly to myself praise world 5 a lot :). Also I'm really glad you showed up in this thread - good memories of discussing Rare platformers over a decade ago and finally we have a new one at hand!

It's just not for you..Why not just stop? I never could endure playing a game I don't enjoy especially when it's that big. :O

Ah, the good old days of defending DK64! I'd still do it but I can't blame anyone for thinking it's a chore. Man, I'll post some music later...Some Y-K players probably never played it because of the bad rap it got over the years. :)

That's a bad argument, sorry. The genre is for me. We're talking about a clone of my favorite game of all time, how is it not for me? That doesn't make any sense.

If you think it's a good game, that's great. I don't. I think it's tolerable at best. And the problem is not me. It's a game that is plagued by bad design choices, so many that I can't even begin to list them. If this is a legitimately good game, what are we going to call Banjo, Jak 1 and the 3D Marios? Because not even "legendary" would be enough to give them the proper distance to Yooka-Laylee.

I think we don't have enough ground for discussion here. Just for reference, I vastly prefer Tooie over Kazooie, I like DK64, adore Conker's Bad Fur Day and I think Jak 1 (and 2..Haven't played 3) are boring.

There are things that make you mad with YK but these issues simply don't affect me at all. Yes, I acutally think it's a really good game.

I've been surprised by people not liking it. The emptiness makes it feel more atmospheric and a little dreamy.

But I'd say my rankings are:

Level 2
Level 3
Level 5
Level 4
Level 1

I can see how some of glitterglaze might annoy people, but I didn't have any trouble really and ended up enjoying the level.

Why don't ppl like the hub? Because it's a bit made like and confusing? BK was a bit like that too.

Well, opinions may also vary on the other games. While I would call Banjo-Kazooie "perfect, among the best games ever made", similar to some 3D Marios (and all others are still amazing), I'd call Yooka-Laylee great and Jak & Daxter "nice". I think Yooka-Laylee is significantly better than Jak 1.

Though I can understand your frustration, had I not liked Yooka-Laylee, after all that time, I would be devastated. Especially considering I enjoyed, but absolutely was not blown away by Zelda just a few weeks ago.

I have a feeling that Yooka-Laylee, due to the size of its levels and the less rigorous level design (outside of level 3) when compared to Kazooie, may have a hard time with players who really did not like DK64 and Tooie. Afterall, it has quite a few design concepts from those two games in it.

What do you dislike so much about the first level, out of curiosity?

I don't dislike any of the levels. It's less why do I dislike it and more why do I like the others more. The first level is a tutorial level, a typical jungle world, and while more polished, is also less challenging and less interesting as a theme.

I also don't really love sunny levels much. I like nighttime, winter, atmosphere, spookiness,
scifi and space
, neon colors, gloominess, etc. and the casino level I like because it's such a different theme for these games.

I'm also not necessarily a fan of tons of polish. While sometimes less polished or with more issues, the later levels also feel more interesting and more experimental with ideas to me.

I don't really care about tons of polish. That can make a game boring to me.

Hivory Towers is kinda bland early on IMO, but I found it got way more interesting once you get to
that outdoor part of it where the tomes for Capital Cashino and Galleon Galaxy are at

World 4 is like something of an encapsulation of the mixed Yooka Laylee experience, my least favourite area so far but that's mainly because the minecart boss and Rextro game here managed to beat the piss outta me.
The boss in particular is a real trial by fire of understanding how to make use of your few moves in quick thinking succession and it just keeps on going, like the idea is sound but it needed some refining.
Hopefully the tome expansion will add some boosts to it, I do like how the pagies are doled out here.

World 3 was great, makes Bubblegloop Swamp seem small time.
