Yoshi Touch N Go - Gamespot review

Wario64

works for Gamestop (lol)
7.2

http://www.gamespot.com/ds/action/yoshi/review.html

"Ultimately, Yoshi's Touch & Go is a clever, charming little game, but it doesn't really go anywhere. The gameplay concepts that are at work here are quite sound, but the game seems content to let the novelty of it all carry the weight. It's a great example of a game that you honestly couldn't pull off on any other system, but for all its innovation, Yoshi's Touch & Go simply lacks substance."

So...how are you guys gonna spin this one?

Agree roughly with that score. But then again some nights I have great sessions with it and it feels like It should rate higher.

Not as big a deal as the Jungle Beat score IMO.

B-but we still have Meteos, right? RIGHT????

"Ultimately, Meteos is just a touch screen-based attempt to capitalize on the success of the multi-million selling Lumines. While fun for a few hours, it quickly loses its charm and is nowhere near as captivating."

Note to Koei: A one-trick novelty is better than your first handheld Dynasty Warriors game. :p

You know this post is really sad because I was just thinking to myself it's a good thing Mejilan bumped the Dynasty Warrior thread so that hopefully it could distract you.

I'm just kidding around. The PSP is killing the DS for quality US releases so far, but it appears that Dynasty Warriors game really does suck.

I'm glad I stopped reading video game reviews a long time ago.

Thanks for sharing. Why the hell did you post, again?

(Killed two birds with one stone.)

Does that mean I should NOT be bumping this one, then?

I'll be picking this game up next week too. Damn, my wallet is gonna HATE me once this month ends!

Actually Gamespot seems to like Meteos

From their new preview

Meteos will likely be one of the most pleasant surprises in the Nintendo DS's software library to come along in quite some time. The seemingly simple puzzler has garnered a healthy share of attention due to its development. The game from developer Q Entertainment is the result of a collaboration between Masahiro Sakurai, a former member of HAL Laboratories (whose resume includes the Kirby and Super Smash Bros. games), and Tetsuya Mizuguchi, former studio head of Sega's United Game Artists (whose resume includes Sega Rally, Space Channel 5, Rez, and, most recently, Lumines for the PSP). The pairing of two seasoned vets obviously sets expectations higher than normal for a puzzle game, so you can imagine that we went in hoping to be wowed when we got our hands on a final retail version of the game, which was just released in Japan. While we've just scratched the surface of the rich game and will be clocking in much time with it this weekend, we have to say it makes a winning first impression, which obviously bodes well.

Based on what we've played so far, Meteos is a game you're going to want to get for your DS. Yes, there's a fair share of puzzlers out there for the system, but Meteos has a winning charm and addictive gameplay you shouldn't miss. Unfortunately, there are two bits of bad news we have to share. First, Meteos has no US publisher at this time. Second, it doesn't feature any English text, which makes it a challenge when navigating through menus. However, neither of these points should stop you from importing the game if you're interested in it. Meteos is fun and stylish, which makes it a great DS title. Hopefully some US third party (or Nintendo itself) will pick this gem up for US release.

They also have some new videos here

I didn't really get a sense from the review YT&G has a true Story Mode or not. Is it just a series of objectives, or is there actually a plot?

That's my main problem with the DS; No game so far has managed to combine unique gameplay with an engaging narrative. And when I say engaging, i'm not talking Final Fantasy-level here; I was satisfied with the Bouncer for god's sake. All I want is a bigger reason for playing then a high score.

But Princess Peach has baked a cake! Don't you like cake or something?!

I dislike Dynasty Warriors anyway, so I'm with you. I've never played the PSP Dynasty Warrior game, though. I'm pretty sure it sucks ass like the others though, but I'll reserve final judgment until I get some hands-on w/ it..

Speaking of Peach, has their been any new media, or information of the Peach DS game? I'm eagerly anticipating it, since I remember someone saying it would have Mario 2 gameplay.

I'm still gonna pick it up. It looks like fun. I mean the Wario minigame with the slingshot on Mario DS takes up most of my busride. If you need a story driven handheld read a book.

What's with the 1993 graphics?

I'm definitely not against sprites, but can't the DS pull off alot more than what Nintendo is doing?

meh. they gave FTM and Wario similar scores and they were REALLY fun. Im sure this one is as well, Im betting its being a bit of a one trick pony hurt it.

Damn, I was thinking this would be the big one after playing it at E3. Hopes for a Yoshi's Island heir apparent dashed?

I think the gameplay isnt the issue.. its that the game is VERY short and relies on lots of replay for its substance.

A 7.2 for GameSpot means its a good game. I'll buy it anyway. I like the idea of the simple yet tough gameplay.

How can IGN and Gamespot scores differ by SO much!?

IGN rates a lot more on hype in my opinion. Any title with some hype is guaranteed at least a 6.0. I think GameSpot reviews stand the test of time a hell of lot better than IGN. IGN has better media though so thats probably the only reason why its worth visiting IGN. Thats how I knew Yoshi was going to be a worthy purchase.

How many hyped games have been rated under a 6.0 by Gamespot?

IGN tends to rate higher than Gamespot for any game and in any subsite (GC, PS2, etc), but these two games seemed to have a major difference since Gamespot invested much more into the fact that they're such short games, while IGN still considered them great games.

Yeah, that 10 for Tony Hawk 3 really, uh, stands out. :P

Gamespot generally has the better writers, but I think both sites get it right most of the time and make some bad judgements here and there.

Edit: Almost forgot about Sega's PR firm, IGN Dreamcast. They belong in a different category entirely.

A 7 seems to be the proper rating for Yoshi's Touch and Go, especally given that the ending review blurb at Gamespot is correct.
