You know, even in diversity Hollywood is pretty non-diverse

Definitely not an STD, as I'm a pure.
It definitely annoys me to see Star Wars held up as this bastion of progress in Hollywood while I think to myself, "You cast another main character as white, congrats on being so brave?"

This so much. They're being praised for being "diverse", yet the main character is a white female. And then they tried to deceive everyone in thinking the black character would be the main. And then they cast another white female as a lead for the next one. Wish they casted an African American woman or Asian woman. That actress they casted doesn't even seem to be a good one.

It really would've been awesome if the main for Rogue One was a male or female Asian lead. That would've shown more of a commitment to diversity than casting another yet another white person. This would've been the perfect chance to do it.

I can only think of Antonio Banderas. Michael Pena is getting close if he keeps getting big roles in movies like Fury, Ant-Man, and The Martian.

And even then, Antonio Banderas is a white spaniard and not Latino... You know things are bad in Hollywood when he's your best representation.

There's no way he might not be in on it if he has been doing this for years. It's like Danny Trejo plays mostly as a bad guy sans Machete, and he requests that he must be some kind of gangster or something and die in the movie because he wants to show everyone that being bad sucks.

edit: Yea it's fake, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noel_Gugliemi http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0346595/

It would have been hilarious if he wanted to be named Hector in every movie.

Preach on, minority bros.

I'd like to see more atheist characters.
Man, me too. They're always the "skeptic asshole" at best or they discover faith along the way. It's tiresome. But, that's another topic I think.

Now while I'd be totally on board for a minority female lead myself (and I'm really mad about the Sleepy Hollow fiasco about that), and I'd have preferred Tatiana Maslany among the candidates they were considering, that's really unfair to Felicity Jones, isn't it? She is widely considered to be a very talented actress.

i agree with you OP, but I lost it at "Will Smill"

i think it will be another 30 years and change before we see asian (the entire region, not just china/japan/korea etc.) lead actors getting some decent amount of representation.

No different from how the Muslim character is often a terrorist or at best a close minded asshole. At least the atheist is often portrayed as a snarky yet lovable scientist :p

Though a character's religion in most movies is rarely touched on, though I guess most assume they're Christian if it's set in the US.

I'd be lying if I said this didn't bother me. Still waiting for a POC to be the lead in that franchise.

mainstream diversity is more about appearing to actively work on the problem than it is about actually solving diversity issues.

What middle eastern actors ever got to play a notable good guy role? I only ever see them cast as terrorists and criminals.

Aside from movies, Marvel/DC is pretty guilty for this as well.
For example, we have black superheroes (Miles Morales, Black Panther, Luke Cage, Falcon, John Stewart, Cyborg, etc..) but where are all the Asians?
Off the top of my head, the only prominent asian superhero i can remember is Shang-Chi and Katana.
This also doesn't even say much considering how obscure they are compare to most of the black superheroes that are definitely more well-known.

Angry Grimace

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"
Y'all know that hector thing is fake right? He's been "Hector" an inordinate number of times, but not THAT many times.

We have lots of famous black leads.

Will Smith
Morgan Freeman
Denzel Washington
Samuel L. Jackson
Kevin Hart
Idris Elba
Laurence Fishburne
Terry Crews
Eddie Murphy
Jamie Fox
Danny Glover

but I think most are old at this point. I wonder if when the new generation will appear. They have cycled through these guys for decades. I think in 50 years will get more hispanics. Aren't they on their way to becoming half of the majority within the next century?

Marvel: Shang Chi, Special Agent Jimmy Woo (Agents of Atlas), Amadeus Cho (The current Hulk), Sunfire, Jubilee, Colleen Wing, Nico Minoru (Runaways), Karma, Jolt

DC is a bit harder off the top of my head and New 52 got rid of a few of them, like Ryan Choi (Atom). Katana, Shado, Cassandra Cain, The Ray are all I got, and the Cain just rejoined continuity. There's the new Superman coming soon and I believe the Great Ten will return in that book as well.

That's Asian as Japanese, Chinese, Korean, which is incorrect though.

And yes, they are less prominent than some of the black heroes.

I work in close proximity to a few studios and production houses and I can tell you that theres a huge problem off-screen as well.

Evey aspect of film production is white as fuck: From the writing, post production, marketing, even set/wardrobe design, lighting, and sound.

Yep I'm black and have worked at a few production houses in London over the years and other than the usually black or indian security guy there is usually no one of colour in a lot of these companies. At best you'll maybe see 2 or 3 every now and then.

Interestingly when we had american production staff visit they were usually a lot more diverse and PoC usually were higher up in their companies than they ever would be in the UK.

I thought it had long been confirmed that it's going to be Carol Danvers?

I was under the impression that they were going to use the Captain Marvel identity for the Carol Danvers movie, not the Ms. Marvel mantle.

It would have been hilarious if he wanted to be named Hector in every movie.

You know, if i was him and was typecasted like that i'd request when possible to have the character listed like that precisely because how funny it could be.

Not a big comic guy. I thought Ms Marvel was another name for the female Captain Marvels. My mistake.
