Social Security must be the last line of defense for liberals... they're so concerned about it.

It ain't going away, fellas (sadly) .. take a deep breath and relax.

A little background information on the event:

efore the event, Philly DFA began chanting "Hey-hey, ho-ho, Rick Santorum has got to go!" Local college Republicans, who are just about the only Republicans in West Philly, responded with a chant that beautifully was captured live by CNN: "hey-hey, ho-ho, Social Security has got to go!" I love it when the other side does your campaigning for you!

Inside the hall, the biggest applause line of the event was generated early on when Santorum asked a rhetorical question about demographics and funding: "what happens in 2008?" Before he could answer his own question, someone shouted "Bush leaves office," and the room went wild. [RAWR]

It's great that they showed how they really feel and didn't follow the party line, which is to not scare off people with totally removing SS.

Going into the event I had planned to ask Santorum about the slime attack on the AARP in the hopes it wold get some press coverage, but something he said during the presentation gave me an idea for an even better question. He claimed that some Senate Democrats agreed with Bush's proposal, so I went up and asked him to name names. He backed down and said that none of them support it now because it has become so politicized, which is a very hypocritical comment to make when you are on a campaign tour of your own.

However, after he backed down, he said that because no Democrats supported the plan, it would be necessary to find a compromise plan. Not only was it amazing to have Santorum literally say to my face that Bush's plan wasn't going to pass, but it was even more interesting for him to admit that a compromise was actively being sought. Considering this, I was particularly stunned to see this story hit the wires only a few minutes ago. It is about a "compromise" plan proposed by Paul O'Neil and openly supported by Harold Ford, Kent Conrad and, you guessed it, Rick Santorum:

Mandark

Small balls, big fun!
Iceman: You've mentioned SS a few times, but you've never explained what's wrong with the program (other than it being "old"), what a better national pension program would look like, or why Bush's plan is good.

If I didn't know better, I'd say that you were hiding behind snark because you have nothing to back it up. Good thing I do know better, huh?

Republican representatives are being sent to their districts in a full blitz campaign against SS, mostly to Universities and Colleges...
According to this article, they are being "encouraged" to go.

GOP leaders are encouraging rank-and-file members to hold town hall meetings in their home states and districts during next week's congressional recess, arming them with briefing books, PowerPoint presentations and a video of Bush making the case for major changes in Social Security.

But many Republicans will not be joining their leaders in promoting Bush's proposal. Some lawmakers will be trying to have more low-key "listening sessions" with their constituents to test the political waters. Others plan to focus on other issues and address Social Security only if constituents raise it.

"The situation is fluid, but it has the potential to blow up," said Rep. Thomas M. Davis (R-Va.). "I'm going to keep my mouth shut."

On a slightly related note, the people who ran the "AARP is against troops and for gay marriage" ad said that it was to test liberal bloggers. Sure. Then why post something that breaks the BS-meter (by their standards too)?
